I feel this way when the breakup is handled really, really well. When I feel for both characters and think they really loved each other but it just didn't work out or they just drifted apart, my heart breaks. I can't handle it. Then again, if the breakups are handled badly and someone is demonized/OOC cheating, then I stop reading period.

I prefer the breakups be mentioned in passing if they have to happen, honestly.

The drifting apart thing really irks me with one of my current fandoms. The characters have been a part of each other's lives for 10+ years and the relationship is just an extension of being very close friends. They see or talk to each other pretty much every day. It drives me nuts when they just decide not to be together anymore and she (yeah, it's het) completely drops out of his life when he hooks up with his new guy.

...can I ask which fandom?

I feel this way when people do that in RPF.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I'd honestly prefer things were retconned so that they were never together in the first place or they were written as breaking up/drifting apart in a way that didn't demonize one or the other character.

I actually really like that when it's done well (although I do also like when they do end up with someone else/otherwise happy, because that gives it less of a "LADIES MAKE WAY FOR THE SLASH" flavour).

But then again I would love to see more break-up fic, because romance isn't always perfect and people break up, but obviously a lot of fic is about people getting/being together so I'll take what I can get ;)

It depends on how much I care about the canon het, but I totally get this. I would rather they just not mention the other relationship somehow, but if they're going to have a break-up I often hate the convenient mutual drifting-apart (complete with supportive "I always knew you were meant to be with someone else" mush) as much as I hate the pointless demonizing (like suddenly having the woman act all terrible and OOC), like there's something wrong with making the break-up actually hurt. But yeah, you can bet I have double standards and don't give as much of a crap when the established canon pairing feels poorly developed to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Because people never act like assholes when someone breaks up with them, right? There are countless cases of both men and women turning into asshats after a breakup, so i don't see whats wrong with someone acting this way in a fanfiction, at least as long it's not someone known for trashinbg women in their fics for apparantly no reason at all. Someone breaks up with them? Counts as reason for me.

lol, I am such a horrible one for double standards. I will bitch about how bad it is to demonize love interests for no reason, but then I'll totally go secretly read horribly OOC fics where Kennedy's an abusive rapist bitch who the Scoobies triumphantly kick out and beat up and threaten. I mean, I'll rationalize it because I don't take those fics seriously or think they're right, and I'd enjoy it happening to Kennedy even if Tara doesn't come back to life and get with Willow, but still, I'm such a hypocrite. :D

It depends on how it's handled, for me. Of course, if it's a het pairing that I like, chances are that I'm not going to be reading a fic breaking them up anyway. But if I don't care about the pairing, then as long as there's no character bashing or cheating involved, I'm good.

I do tend to prefer it though if it's mutual, or the woman breaking up with the man, not the other way around. The other way around can be a little....ouchy.
intrigueing: (no hard feelings point break)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-10-21 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I hate this too. Even when I prefer a certain couple over a canon couple, the breakup always makes me uncomfortable. I prefer it when it's just not mentioned or dwelt upon, as shallow as that sounds. Especially considering lot of times, canon pairings have some pretty important symbolic meaning attached to them in canon that makes me feel bad to lose, somehow.
intrigueing: (respawn lol)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-10-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I also wish that characters would break up for more realistic reasons, that aren't (even retroactively) because "omg but she wasn't his ~soulmate~ who was ~destined~ to be with him like this other character!" or "their relationship is fundamentally flawed and horrible and anyone who ships it must be an idiot to not see how wrong it is!" or "but she's not worthy enough to take care of him!!"

Also, it would be neat to see breakups over situational stuff that just makes a relationship unworkable rather than personal stuff, simply because it never happens in fic and it happens so often in real life that people who go very well together can't actually make a relationship work because the universe and the laws of society and space and time doesn't rearrange themselves to facilitate a romance.

I agree. But I'd rather have that then him straight up cheating on her. I don't care if I prefer the slash pairing; hell, I don't even care if I HATE the female character; cheating is a big no-no for me...

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-10-21 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I mind a breakup as much when both characters are being portrayed in character and the breakup is...I don't know, it's either somewhat amicable or there's a decent reason for it happening that makes sense or SOMETHING. But I really don't like it if they're just unceremoniously broken up without decent build-up as to why or, worse, when the third wheel is portrayed as being some sort of screeching, unreasonable harpy (when she's perfectly kind, understanding and patient in canon).

I also once read a fanfic where a character--who, in canon, is obsessed with his love interest for 16 years and is LITERALLY prepared to DESTROY THE WORLD to make the girl he loves allow him to be at her side--decided a week after they became a couple that he actually loved that other guy he'd been around those whole 16 years and had actually treated pretty harshly during the whole "I'm going to destroy the world" thing. I clicked the back button in disgust. In that sort of scenario I'd prefer the breakup to be years later...or for the relationship to take place in an AU, or...the manga version (where he isn't in a canon couple) or maybe in the past before he's in a couple or somethiiiiing. Anything but "I promised to always be at your side and went through all sorts of crazy shit to be with you but changed my mind a week later." That just makes the character look extremely fickle.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually okay with canon couples breaking up in fic, demonizing or horribly bashing the lady however is something I can never stand especially if it's done to 'prop up' the ship, leaves a bad taste in my mouth and can sometimes put me off of a writer completely.
ariakas: (lol hikawa)

[personal profile] ariakas 2012-10-21 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Breaking up's fine, but demonizing said female love interest just for the hell of it is an instant back click for me. People break up for all sorts of reasons, not just because "she's such a bitch".

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Even with het, I'm the same; for instance, Hotch is happy with his girlfriend, JJ is happy with will. Even though I like Hotch and JJ together, I'd never read a fic that involved those relationships coming to unhappy ends, nor do I want it to happen on the show. (I'm full-up on Hotch angst, canon or fanon.)

However, AUs in which the other characters never existed are fine.

Even in a situation where I dislike the other character (say, Fritz on The Closer), I'd take an AU Brenda/Flynn where Fritz never existed over a breakup any day.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, this always makes me wonder why people don't write more threesome fics. That way you get the best of both worlds. :D

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It is one of the saddest things that the movie "This Means War" (I am apparently one of the 3 people alive who enjoyed it) didn't end that way.

It would have been so epic.
