Obviously neither the OP nor the above commenters are actual ballet dancers, because yes, that does look like a ballet slipper. It's just not a pointe shoe. And for the record, I have 20+ years experience as a ballet dancer so I have an idea of what I'm talking about.

This particular character always wears pointe shoes, though, so it is a big error for the accuracy.

Then bitch about the character not wearing attire that is consistent with canon. Do not say "That is not a ballet slipper!" when is very clearly is.

+1

If you're going to say something is wrong, make sure you know what the fuck you're talking about.

+1 I was actually coming here to say that. I'm not a ballet dancer, but I've seen [and read] enough to know that pointe isn't the only shoe type out there.

Not OP, but also a ballet dancer of 10+ years (although not professionally).

The character wears pointe shoes throughout the entire anime, and most technique shoes don't have ribbons, so it's very reasonable to assume it's supposed to be a pointe shoe. The way the toe is shaped, and the way it doesn't seem to have a shank or sole (no pointe or technique shoe I've seen has smooth satin or leather across the back like that) make it look kind of weird.

The shoe doesn't bug me much, and I find it odd that OP calls that out instead of the awkwardly turned in arabesque - but my point is that yes, it is supposed to be a pointe shoe, and yes, it does look a bit off.

Again, these are specifics about the canon, which those familiar with the canon are well within their rights to take issue with. But the OP made a blanket statement that did not take the specificity of the canon into consideration.

If for this character that is supposed to be a pose en pointe, then yes, the artist failed majorly. However, to generically state that "ballet shoes don't look/work like that" is false and I will correct those statements.

(On an aside, we were required to have ribbons on our technique shoes for exams and recitals and at some point, actually had to use worn out pointe shoes as our technique shoes, so ribbons would have been on them as well. However, this may have entirely been an RAD thing or something that's changed over the past 20 years.)

Yeah, OP was jumping the gun as being on demi-pointe is totally normal in both technique shoes and pointe shoes. I do feel like the flat, smooth, pink back to the shoe looks weird - like, no shank, no soles, no seam - but it's also pretty easy to pass that off as an artistic stylization thing.

(And yeah, ribbons are definitely used on technique shoes, I just meant that it's generally less common and the average person without much experience, like the artist, would probably associate ribbons with pointe shoes.)

The Princess Tutu fandom is really, really rife with incorrect-to-actual-ballet stuff (in art and cosplay) and to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe OP was fed up in general and just grabbed the first art in their art folder to make the secret. Not excusing false blanket statements, but I can sympathize.

I think I'm glad I don't know the canon, because it would probably drive me to drink with inaccuracies.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Haha XD The canon is actually surprisingly good about it, for the most part. I was prepared to cringe-quit partway through when I started, but it wasn't that bad. There are some kinda hilarious things, though, like how they clearly did a lot of work to make her dancing reasonably accurate but then they didn't look into how dancers run; so she finishes dancing, turns around, and then jogs off like a girl in PE class.

That was my first thought too! I was like, "That's not a pointe shoe, but . . . it's still a ballet slipper."
