I find that's sadly common in Princess Tutu fanart. You watched the show! How can you not have a vague idea what a ballet slipper is supposed to look like?!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
More importantly, how can you not have a vague idea of what proper ballet form is supposed to look like -_- Seriously, if you don't know, use a photo to base your pose off of. Otherwise all the irl dancers will cry (this is also common in Princess Tutu fanart).

Hm, yeah, this is something I've noticed in fanarts sometimes. I do love this one, but there's just no denying that a ballet slipper shouldn't really work that way. It personally doesn't take away my enjoyment of the fanart, but I'd also support the idea of pointing these things out to the artists in question, especially if they plan on drawing more ballet poses and such. Maybe hit them up with a critique?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
WELP, time to be even more paranoid about the details in the fanart I make!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's an important detail like HOW BALLET SHOES LOOK when drawing fanart of a BALLET ANIME then yeah, be paranoid. I mean, how can you miss something like that anyway unless the anime is crappy at drawing ballet poses?

The small details though? I don't give a fuck.

Well, the secret did say "Important detail." I'd say getting ballet shoes/poses/outfits right in fanart for a show about ballet is a pretty damn important detail.

Well, if we're already going there, that skirt doesn't look like a tutu either. And there's something wrong with Fakir's right arm. And the perspective of the piece is off in general.

I still think it's an excellent piece of artwork, though. :) I give no shits for these kind of nitpicky details.

Obviously neither the OP nor the above commenters are actual ballet dancers, because yes, that does look like a ballet slipper. It's just not a pointe shoe. And for the record, I have 20+ years experience as a ballet dancer so I have an idea of what I'm talking about.

This particular character always wears pointe shoes, though, so it is a big error for the accuracy.

Not OP, but also a ballet dancer of 10+ years (although not professionally).

The character wears pointe shoes throughout the entire anime, and most technique shoes don't have ribbons, so it's very reasonable to assume it's supposed to be a pointe shoe. The way the toe is shaped, and the way it doesn't seem to have a shank or sole (no pointe or technique shoe I've seen has smooth satin or leather across the back like that) make it look kind of weird.

The shoe doesn't bug me much, and I find it odd that OP calls that out instead of the awkwardly turned in arabesque - but my point is that yes, it is supposed to be a pointe shoe, and yes, it does look a bit off.

Oh yeah, so with you there. For me it's all those romantic pictures of ballroom dancing couples - lovingly detailed, but getting the most basic positions wrong.

brightblueink: Fakir from Princess Tutu doing a ballet twirl while holding a sword. (Knight twirl)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-10-21 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That particular art doesn't bother me too much, but I can understand it. I get kinda nitpicky about people forgetting Fakir's scar.

Also now that I'm really staring at this art I feel like Tutu looks tanner than Fakir and that bothers me, too. I know it's partially the shading but Fakir still looks awfully pale...

...but yeah, I still like this art overall.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay except people with dance experience in this thread are telling you it does look like a ballet slipper.

I think you're too picky, artists are not experts in everything they draw and even if they've done a good amount of research, they may still screw up some details here and there. If it really bothers you POLITELY tell them. They may not be able to fix the piece but it will go in the back of their head for the next time they try to do a similar piece.

I don't think you realize how hard it is to make yourself an expert in everything just to be able to draw some fun fanart, like someone above said doing that much research can sometimes stop you from drawing. Give the artist a break.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
ok but, like others have said, that is a ballet slipper. granted it's inaccurate in the sense that tutu is always en pointe, but it's actually the way other ballet shoes work.

i should know, i never managed to get to pointe. :(

BUT i'm with you on the "small details" thing. What gets me for tutu fanart is giving her legs really bad/nonexistent turnout.

It's even worse for fencing, both in fanart and in actual canon works. I can't think of a single depiction of a fencer -- saber, foil, or épée -- that had any resemblance to the sport beyond "waving a skinny sword around and looking elegant!"

I have no clue what this art is for, but before reading the tinytext saying it was the BALLET SLIPPER that looked off, I gave it a closer look to see if I could see any glaring defects in what is otherwise a really lovely piece of art.

I did. But it wasn't the shoe, which looks really well-done in my opinion, because shoes of any kind are really difficult to draw from that perspective. What really bothers me is the girl's head. It seems like it's twisted at a really unnatural angle. It makes her look like a creepy ball-joint doll with a neck just slightly too long.

Also, it took me a while to even FIND her other leg. Once I did.... again, ball-joint doll pose. Maybe it's because I don't watch ballet, but that just looks SO anatomically unlikely, even for a very flexible, muscular, toned, trained dancer. And even if that IS an anatomically "correct" and "possible" pose, it looks sort of silly. Everything else about the girl's pose suggests a kind of coyness, but the position of that other leg suggests Looney Tunes.

I honestly thought you were going to mention the fact that her leg is coming out of the small of her back. The shoe isn't too bad.
