I'm trying to decide if I need to see a doctor

[personal profile] sockpants 2012-10-24 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
For about three months now, I've had this general sense of malaise. I haven't felt... well in that time frame. I have almost no energy and if I don't set an alarm, or if I don't have to get up to use the toilet I'll sleep for literally twenty-four hours.

I don't think it's a big deal, but my friend keeps telling me I need to see a doctor about it. I agree that it would be nice to actually have energy, but I just don't know if it's worth it.

I think that you should.

It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Also, this could be one of the few outward, seemingly benign, symptoms for a larger and worse problem going on inside that you can't see.

Sleeping for twenty four hours isn't normal. Coupled with your no energy for three months, there are alarm bells ringing in my head.

Please see a doctor and get bloodwork done? Please? It might be as simple as a vitamin deficiency or it might be something much worse. Please get it checked out?

It was actually the 24-hour nap that convinced me that maybe my friend is right.

I'll schedule an appointment for my next day off.

Good.

Be well.

Is it really that bad?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I've done that a few times in my life, but they were usually coupled with 30+ hours of awake time so I thought it was just my internal clock is messed up and trying to make up for lost sleep time.

It's not as extreme now, but my internal clock still wants about 36 hours in a day. 12 to sleep and 24 to stay awake.

Well I'm no doctor so I don't know how bad it is. If you were awake for 30+ hours and crashed then yeah, that explains sleeping for 24 hours. It isn't normal because people don't usually stay awake for 30+ hours. And if your internal clock wants 24up/12down, I can't tell you if it's good or bad.

But no energy+feeling unwell+sleeping 24 hours is what's making me worried. Not "I have a weird internal clock and I want to sleep for 24 hours after being awake for more than a day" but "I want sleep for 24 hours and I don't feel like doing anything else but sleep."

See the difference?

Yeah, see a doctor. If nothing else shows up, it might even be some form of depression -- I've had periods where my depression manifested as just overpowering inertia.

I think it would be worth dishing out the time and money to get a checkup. I can think of several things that would cause that, ranging from minor to pretty awful.

I see you've already been convinced, but I hope things go well!

I don't know your gender (I'm sorry - I feel like I should.) But if you are a female, make sure your doctor checks your thyroid levels. Before I was diagnosed with under-active thyroid, all I wanted to do was sleep.

I also echo the possibility of depression. I'm on anti-depressents and it has made a huge difference - night and day!

Good luck!

I'm glad you've decided to see a doctor. Better safe than sorry. I don't think you'll regret it.

Sleeping that long isn't normal. The only time I've had that happen was with some psych meds that really fucked me over. There are a lot of different things it could be -- I have a friend who has a fairly severe thyroid disorder where that was her first symptom. Definitely get it checked out, better safe than sorry.
