I'm sorry for your disappointment, OP, but honestly, Kate Mulgrew isn't there to shore up your love for your ship - fic, art, and your fellow shippers should be doing that - and it shouldn't affect your love of J/7 because she shot it down. Actors aren't characters and their validation shouldn't be necessary for shipping enjoyment. It would be nice, not gonna lie, but if we had to rely on them, a lot of us would be horribly disappointed.

OP

I know - it was not that I expected her to be all over it - but I really thought that she would refrain from making such biting and hateful comments. That's what I meant. But you're right I shouldn't care, I hate that I do. :/

Well, you have to see it from her POV: she's the actress, not the character. When you say, "So would Seven of Nine and Janeway ever do it?", she interprets that as "You and Jeri Ryan are hot. Would you ever bone?" and responds thusly. In general, it's really not good conduct to ask about possible sexual relationships between characters to the live action actors, especially when that relationship would go against the actors' sexualities. It's become disturbingly common of late, but you have no reason to expect even a polite response to such a question.

She's also probably been asked that same vein of questions many times and appreciates it less every time.

On the one hand, true; on the other hand, I remember being hurt when I found out Terri Garr's opinion of Assignment: Earth. It's hard to feel the same way about something when, behind one of the protagonist's faces, you know the dislike is there.

I can understand the disappointment, but at the same time I don't think it should ruin your love for the pairing. However, I know that's not something you can help, so... :/

Hopefully you'll move past it, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think anyone who likes a non-canon pairing and expects the actor to like it too is way too fandom-centered. Get over yourself.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't expect actors to share my opinions, I just expect them to be decent human beings and not assholes.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand why she'd have problems with that ship in particular, as I suspect the show may have been trying for more of a parent/child vibe there, and people turning that into romance...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I got the parent/child vibe right from the start, but to be fair, if Janeway were a male Captain taking 7 under his wing in the exact same way it played out on the show, I couldn't absolutely say I wouldn't ship them too, just a little bit.

But then, I have a weird male authority kink, so I might be the only one.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I'm sure people would have shipped them if Janeway were a male captain. I can see why people shipped them as it is. But the power imbalance...

I definitely see mother/daughter there and I really like it. So many scifi shows have strong father figures and Janeway as mother/HBIC really worked for me.

I think it's really best not to ask the actors about their character's sex lives. It is their body fandom is fantasing about and I imagine that's weird. Kate's been very supportive of the idea of Voyager having a gay character, and that character being 7of9 comes up at cons. She's pretty against Janeway in any relationship, because she has to get the ship home, and I think that's fair.

Doesn't take anything away from your ship! (Heck, my OTP never even were on the same show, but I love it anyway.)

My guess? She was okay with it until insane fans bugging her about it MADE her hate it.

I always find it funny when fans help ruin their own ships chances of even being possible canon.

Pic related.

MY HERO! *swoon* *faint*

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
This is only tangentially related, but my love for Tamora Pierce grew three sizes when I asked her if Ozorne was so butthurt about Numair leaving/escaping Carthak because he was in love with him, she thought for a second and was like: You know, I'd never thought of it that way. But I can see that. If it works for you, go for it.

She is my favourite cranky, ginger, dirty old lady.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That was very polite.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
"If it works for you, go for it."

Count me in as someone else who always thinks I can't possibly love her more, and then I read something like this.

Yeah, Mulgrew's made no secret of the fact that she doesn't like J/7, and that may be partially due to it being femmeslash, but it also may be because she doesn't seem to like Jeri Ryan very much, period, but I'd rather not open that can of worms. Anyway, I don't like it when actors disparage my preferred ships much either, but I respect that they have the right to their own opinions (especially on matters such as this) and I just prefer to avoid bringing shipping up to them in the first place unless I know they're okay with it. At any rate, character =/= actor, so I'd try not to let it affect your view of the ship itself.

By the way, speaking of J/7, if you're on LJ you should come join [profile] jslash7. We could do with some fresh meat new members. /shameless self-promotion.

The only Trek I've ever watched is TOS, so I maybe shouldn't even be in this thread to begin with, but wow - you mean there's else out there who *doesn't* like Jeri Ryan?

I don't really understand why anyone would ask actors shipping questions(especially if the actor is not comfortable with it) and expect it to end well. But then I'm someone who believes in keeping shipping as far away from everyone involved with a show/movie/book, even with canon ships. While I do understand the disappointment OP, actors don't owe you anything on that front.

Someone asked Nana Visitor at a con about which of Kira's three love interests she preferred but that was a bit different since at least all three relationships were canon.

She chose Odo by the way, because he's more *ahem* versatile.

I saw Kate Mulgrew at a con recently and it seems to me that she isn't particular for any ships involving Janeway and a member of the crew. The only one she talked specifically about was Janeway/Chakotay but she mentioned in general that she thought Janeway's isolation from the rest of a crew was a major part of her character.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely this is another case of fanon v canon? That ship simply isn't canon and never would be. I don't see why the actress should provide fan service when it's her character and she knows it's OOC for Janeway to have a relationship with Seven.

I know some actors do a lot of fan service, but they don't have to, it's up to her.

From last month's 'Destination Star Trek' London Convention

"Last up on the Main Stage was… Kate Mulgrew. She asked for four fans older than 50, but a dozen took the stage. She welcomed them all, and answered their questions. What’s her favorite technical part of the Voyager? “The men,” she shot back. Archer or Picard? someone asked. “Kirk,” she shouted. Which of the crew would she have wished were gay? Mulgrew smiled and said, “Seven of Nine!” The crowd howled in laughter. Before Voyager, Mulgrew knew nothing of Star Trek… “and that was good.” And she noted, proudly, “I bet every woman would have captain envy. A lot of actresses… My heart goes out to them.”"
