What phrases get on your nerves because people don't say them correctly?

[identity profile] with-rainfall.livejournal.com 2012-11-04 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine's "I could care less". GRR. Stop saying it!

If you could NOT care less, it means you don't give a shit. If you COULD care less, it means you're way too invested and need someone to drag you away and distract you.

So... you might be interested in this.

Me personally? I'm less about people saying thing wrong. (I'm more likely to not care or just giggle in my head over it.) I'm more about being adverse to certain words. They're normal words. People are using the words right. They're not weird slang. I just don't like that word.

ME TOO!

I have an irrational hatred of the words "fellowship" and "beauteous". I'm not sure why. They just get on my nerves.

I have a weird hatred of people describing things or people as "lovely" so I definitely know what you mean.

Ooh, I had no idea that 'titbit' was a word. I've been saying & writing 'tidbit' for years.

Guilty of this! I wrote a fanfic where a character said that, and someone messaged me so I changed it to "couldn't care less."

Okay, it's more a written thing, but I'm sure people are saying it wrong too:

It's free REIN, not free REIGN. Because it's about letting a horse do what it wants, ergo REIN. You're not talking about monarchs, here.

It is? I learned something new today.

"For all intensive purposes" and "Mid rift" come to mind immediately. The latter's not as bad, since in speech it tends to sound identical to midriff, but "intensive purposes" is not actually the same as "intents and purposes"! It's not even a phrase with opaque, antiquated words, dammit! People still use both intent and purpose, fairly regularly!

+1 on "intensive purposes"

Uh, personally...I legitimately thought the phrase was "for all intensive purposes" for 15+ years. I had never seen it written down, and that's what it sounded like when people said it. The day I realized it was "intents and" my brain exploded a little. So I'd keep that in mind when you hear people say it and want to crush something.

Ha, I once made up a bullshit explanation about that. Like, "Yeah, sure, I could care less, if I cared enough about it to put forth the effort to care less about it." It didn't help me want to roll my eyes when people say it, though.

For me, it's "semantics", as in "Well, now you're just arguing semantics". Really, words mean things and that might be important, especially during disagreements and miscommunications? You don't say. (Big pet peeve, as I studied linguistics at uni.)

"Could of".
No. You could HAVE done better. You couldn't OF done anything, because that's not how the English language works.
(Yes, I know languages evolve. Doesn't mean I have to like it.)

And "had of".

Hahaha, that's the spirit, anon ;)

Also, "had have", come to think of it.

I do this. I hope that it never makes it through to my written work, because I do know the difference (honest!), but I say it all the time.

Generally I'm fully on the side of "language evolves and that's OK."

But I hate it when people pronounce nuclear as nuke-yuh-ler. It just drives me straight up a wall, even though it's probably in the dictionary by now.

Re: What phrases get on your nerves because people don't say them correctly?

But what if you say it sarcastically? ☺

When people use 'per se' incorrectly and/or spell it 'per say'.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

Irregardless. As if it had a different meaning from 'regardless'.

How even did that even begin.

I hate it when people say "epitaph" when they mean "epithet." For some reason, newscasters do this ALL THE TIME and it drives me nuts! "He was heard shouting racial epitaphs..." No! No he was not! He was shouting racial epithets! Arg! For a while, it even made me doubt I understood the correct definition of either word.

Re: What phrases get on your nerves because people don't say them correctly?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a written one, but it's one that I never understood how people confuse it because of the way it's said (plus the fact they're spelling another actual word): "viola" instead of "voila". Unless they're actually finishing or summoning a viola, in which case: awesome.
