I really feel like Avengers deserves some sort of award. I've seen more rants about the fandom, more shipwars, more character bashing/apologizing, more misogyny, and more divisive secrets about comics vs movies than I've seen for any other fandom since HP. It's astonishing. :/

In conclusion: I proclaim Avengers fandom to be The Wankiest Fandom of 2012.

Shipwars? I...gotta say that the only real ship-to-ship combat I've seen is the Pepper-bashers who hate her for stealing Tony from Steve or something, but I dunno if even that counts because Steve/Tony is not and has absolutely no chance of being canon.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-12 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not in the movies, but there's the canon AU where Steve and girl!Tony get married. So, yes, it has had the chance of being canon in the comics at least.

Also, is there really Pepper-bashing? I've only ever seen her get hate from people who just hate Gwyneth Paltrow. In my experience there's more bashing and wank amongst the slash shippers.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think we've hit HP levels of wank yet. Or even LotR levels, for that matter. There's some wank, yeah, but you find that in most fandoms. It's just easier to spot in bigger fandoms because they're everywhere.

Misogyny? Elaborate please? I always thought Avengers fandom was refreshingly non-misogynistic and appreciative of it's female characters...although that might be because there's so few female characters in the first place...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a lot of Pepper bashing, from what I've seen. Most other parts of fandom do alright with it, but some of the Pepper hate is off the charts. And I guess there's Natasha hate, too, but most of the really misogynistic crap is more from die-hard fanboys or the type of guys who think women only went to see the Avengers for hot dudes.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
When did the Pepper-hate start? I've been rather detached from the fandom for a while now and all I remember is Pepper being treated very well. The worst I ever saw was Steve/Tony shippers being condescending towards her because she's not Steve The Perfect Angel Of Holiness Here To Save Tony's Soul From Damnation, but I don't recall much bashing.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of what I've seen is on Tumblr and has kind of picked up since the Avengers came out and more people have flocked to the fandom, at least as far as I can tell. I think it's kind of a by-product of the fandom growing. Everyone I follow loves Pepper, but there are some assholes out there about it. And there are some Steve/Tony shippers who are jerks to Pepper/Tony shippers.

STATING THE OBVIOUS

The Pepper bashing grows in proportion to the slash shipping. I am a rabid slasher, but the more slashers that exist in a fandom, the more hate you will see for canon female love interests.

Hmm, maybe I'm wrong, but the Pepper-bashing never seemed to be very misogynistic in tone? It seemed more "bash everyone who isn't Steve/Bruce (depending on which one you ship) for being ~meeeaaaannn~ to poor Tony." I always thought Rhodey got the short (and probably racism-tinged) end of the stick far more than Pepper.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes me incredibly sad that there isn't more Tony/Rhodey stuff out there. Fandom, why must you waste golden opportunities such as these?!

I got the same impression, actually. It seems far more rooted in the idea that "OMG EVERYONE IS SO MEAN TO TONY AND STEVE/BRUCE (whichever)WILL SAVE HIM!" than anything else. That doesn't make it okay, obvious but... the larger a fandom gets, the higher the number of haters.

I will continue to shake my head at the lack of Rhodey though.

There is a lot of Pepper bashing, but rather than the bashing being misogynistic most of what I have seen is accusing her of being a misogynist based entirely off a few nasty comments she'd made to Christine, and to be honest I don't think too much of that is rooted in shipwank.

I've seen a lot of, uh, dislike or condescension levelled at characters surrounding Tony for being ~mean~ to him or ~not noticing his pain~ but that's about the worst I've seen.

Is this from the kinkmeme? Because I abandoned the kinkmeme for good a while ago once I realized the bulk of it had become issue prompts calling for the character to be shoehorned into anvilicious, OOC, Saturday Morning TV Specials to address some pet SJW wank of the day, and requests for "someone calling out" characters for Random Dick Move X that was already portrayed as a bad thing and learned from in the movies; rather than the smut, fluff, crack, and creative plot bunnies that dominated during the summer.

Eh, that part is luckily dying down quite a bit. By the time Round 14 shuts down and 15 starts it should be fine again. :)

The said, the tendency to post story outlines instead of prompts isn't going away nearly as fast. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-11-12 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think the story outlines instead of prompts is just a common kink meme thing. Once they get big enough or have been around for long enough, everything is TL;DR.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2012-11-12 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Really? This is the first time I've seen so many outline-ish prompts. o.O

(Anonymous) 2012-11-12 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't spent much time on the Avengers kink meme, but I know over in the SPN meme there are SO MANY long ass prompts that are basically the entire story laid out. There's still a fair share of shorter ones, too, but the unspoken consensus seems to be the longer the better. Of course, then a lot of the longer prompts don't get filled and people wonder why. Most people are pretty cool about it, but there are a few people who get really wanky if they feel like people are "stealing" their prompts or if someone bases a prompt on theirs. It's so ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-12 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
I was in the Star Trek and XMFC memes before this, Sherlock to a lesser extent. They all do that eventually, trust me. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a lot of, uh, dislike or condescension levelled at characters surrounding Tony for being ~mean~ to him or ~not noticing his pain~ but that's about the worst I've seen.

These piss me off more than anything because you just know Tony would be the first one to kick the shit out of anyone who had the audacity to bash Pepper or Rhodey for slapping Tony upside the head when he got off-track and sticking by him through all his troubles and issues and all the supervillains trying to kill him over personal feuds.
