I'm hoping to purge mine in another 5...maybe 10 years. But I probably won't.

Oh, man, I recently moved out of my house of ~15 years and outright refused to throw/give away anything from my weaboo days. Anime t-shirts, wall scrolls, shoddy ebay merchandise, DVDs, manga that I only read once, all of it went into a big box for storage and I will probably carry that box with me for the rest of my life wherever I go.

So, I feel that, bro. I feel that.

It's cool, anon. I have a lot of random anime crap that I bought yeas ago, and it's kind of fun and nostalgic now.

For example: I have an Escaflowne music box. It plays the opening theme. Totally useless piece of crap. I'm kind of fond of the fact that I have it, though.

That's really neat! I'm kind of a collector so maybe you shouldn't listen to me since I basically horde junk, but that item sounds kind of rare and I would encourage you to keep it!

Ikr? I have tons and tons of cards that I will never use, a couple of posters from series I ended up not liking, and yet I can't get myself to sell them away. Damn you, 14-year old me!

(Okay, maybe the Fushigi Yuugi poster will be sold. But everything else stays with me 5ever.)

You'd be surprised how easy it is to just throw it all in a box and donate it somewhere, once you get up the nerve to follow through with it. Actually doing it sucks, but it does feel better in the long run. Clean out old ghosts.

You know, I ended up doing this myself at a yard sale earlier this summer. I had packed up almost all of my old comics and "How to Draw Manga" books into a box with the vague hope of getting rid of them someday, and my mother convinced me to try selling some of them off in person. I wasn't expecting it, but the proprietor of the local comicbook store actually showed up and gave me an offer for the whole box! He undersold me (he runs his business at a loss, since it's a post-retirement hobby), but I felt great having gotten rid of all of it in one sweep.

hoarder in recovery here

This. It's difficult and will likely hurt and you'll feel tired and want to stop as you go through the memories, but getting rid of junk feels fantastic later down the road.

You could sell it like other people suggest it, but then you risk getting excuses for holding on to it, which defeats the purpose.

I felt that way at first with my old Jurassic Park toys....now I wish I hadn't. :C

Sell it and get some cash back. NBD.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I recently found some plushies from Naruto that I forgot I had. Those fuckers are staying with me for the rest of my life because they remind me of a happier time. No shame.

If you really don't like them anymore, why not sell them or give them away to another anime fan that would enjoy them? I wouldn't trash them, since that seems like a waste, but it also seems like a waste to have them gather dust somewhere when another fan could actually enjoy them.

I own Gundam Wing tarot cards. Mildly embarrassing, okay, really embarrassing, but I will probably never get rid of them.

What has really kept me from buying merchandise was going to Nakano Broadway. Seeing everything jumbled together in plastic cases, it all looked like junk.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I have Gundam Wing playing cards. I'll never use them, I'm just happy to have them. GW is still one of my favorite all time anime, flaws and all.

The question is how would one go about selling their old merch and what's the chance someone will even buy it? I have a Naruto headband but I can't think of who would buy it now.
Also how do you sell wall scrolls? These things have to be too big for postal.

It's a little easier if you get some money from it (to buy new merchandise for current fandoms!) by selling on eBay or wherever. I'm assuming you didn't mean you'd literally throw this stuff in the trash, but even when donating it to a charity it can be hard to give this type of stuff up. :(

What about selling it or donating it?

I finally threw out all my LotR posters (and I had a lot). Surprisingly it didn't hurt at all.

I have a lot of old animu things I want to throw. But something in this conversation is bothering me. Did Animation equal crappy fandom and Live action equal "mature" fandom?

I'm going to have to downsize eventually. I have an embarrassing amount of that stuff. But I'm keeping a bunch of the good ones and displaying them in my house.

If you've outgrown something ok, maybe it's time to give or throw it away but if you still cherish it, I don't see what the big deal is in keeping it.
I could understand if you're worrying about cluttering up your home though.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
The only reason I still don't have any of my merch (aside from a few stuffed animals) is because the t-shirts are too small for me now and the ones that aren't have the pictures all cracked and ugly because I don't understand how to laundry. I'm sure there's still some embarrassing stuff in a box somewhere, but the only things I would hesitate to throw out would be the stuff I got as gifts. It just feels wrong, even if I haven't spoken to the people who gave them to me in ages. Yeesh.

Goodwill? Some kid who likes them will probably buy them up REAL QUICK. No need to throw them out.

When I was in 11th grade I donated my whole collection of Pet Shop of Horrors and Gravitation mangas to my highschool. I had all the volumes to both and donated both of them because I had finished reading them.

Few years later I regretted it and it took me a long time to recollect the Gravitation ones (I finally finished when I found the 7th volume used at a book store last year), but now I wish I had all the Pet Shop of Horrors u_u

Now I look at my shelf and I told my dad, "I feel like this doesn't really represent me anymore. This was me when I was younger." He replied with, "Don't get rid of them. It just means you're young at heart." So now I just bought Dogs 5 and 6 to say that I have all the current ones and am waiting to buy Jack Frost and eventually get FLCL complete book. I guess now I see it as collecting then it representing me.
