Application Worries

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I need to vent somewhere (and maybe get a little advice).

See, I've been unemployed for 18 months, though I've done 2 months work experience in that time at a frozen food shop. Said frozen food shop has now given me an application form for a part time job, covering maternity leave. So, 12 hours a week, at minimum wage, for about 3 months.

But I don't know if I should apply! I want a full time job (I do apply to a lot, I just don't get the jobs), not part time. Last part time job I had was a real hassle money and time wise, and I don't want to get into another job where 1, I'll be kicked out after a few months, and 2, isn't really enough hours.

I feel like I should apply, but I'm torn.

Sorry about the rant. Does anyone have any advice? I'd really appreciate it.

Apply, but keep looking for other work. You can always drop the frozen food shop job if you find something better.

Just don't tell them you'll continue looking for work, because a lot of places won't even think of hiring someone if they think they'll just leave as soon as they find something better.

But 18 months is a really long time to be unemployed. I'd take whatever I could get at that point.

Oh, I'll still look for other work, either way.

I probably will apply. It's not guaranteed I'll get the job, anyway. Plus, as you said, it is a long time. I'm just sick of it, really. Hate part time work, but hate unemployment. Right now it seems to be a no-win situation :(

I too say apply but keep looking. It will be more experience to put in your resume, right? Even if the job isn't that great and it doesn't last, unemployment can become a vicious cycle on other facets on your life, and a routine where you are doing productive things might put you in the path to look for better things.

Apply. If you get the part time job, you're more likely to be hired for another position you do want. For some reason, employers are less likely to hire someone that isn't working than someone who is. I'm not sure why.

apply for sure. It is MUCH easier to get hired somewhere if you already have a job, plus it will help break up the 18-month unemployment span even more, which will just look better on resumes. Plus a job is a job, better to have a small paycheck than none at all.

You should apply and work there until something better comes along. It's better to have a plan B before abandoning plan A. Some money is better than no money.

Apply. Part-time is better than no-time. I've ditched part-time jobs for better opportunities before, once on the second day of work. It's not great form, but honestly that's the way it goes and you have to look out for number one. It's irritating for them and probably don't count on asking them for any favors later, but part-time employers tend to have high turnover rates anyway for that very reason. Don't worry, you'll be glad you did it.
