...But Superman was like...a complete and utter dick in the '30's.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Batman was and IS a dick, and people still adore him. I don't think Supes being a dick would turn them off.

Remember, this is the fandom that has a high percentage of dickish fans. Also: Frank Miller.

There's a bit of a difference between what Batman does and adopting a kid and burning his father's day gift to you right in front of him while basically calling it crap [and that after making it clear you think he's a shitty son], and deciding that completely tearing down the ghetto neighborhoods to 'lower crime' without bothering to find somewhere else for all the people who live there to stay while everything is being rebuilt.

...you do know that everything you see on Superdickery is the comics covers trying to make readers go "omg no how can Superman be doing that???" so they'll read it, right? That "burning up Jimmy's gift to him" stuff didn't actually happen. And Jimmy's not his adopted son.

It's like when previews show "Good Guy X" killing his coworkers and laughing, to make viewers tune in to see what the actual context is.

da: I do love Superdickery! :-D

And yes, I hope above anon wasn't naive enough to think that was Superman's actual characterization. (But I do love that Jimmy Olsen cover - worst dad ever!)

And he HAS to be a dick in the '30s because.....?

a movie based on the adventures and exploits of Superman as originally published in the 1930's =/= a movie about Superman that is also set in the 1930's

Not really? I mean, I remember one issue where he saved a bunch of miners from a cave-in. He was all about saving regular people from unjust situations in the really early issues (at least IIRC)
terabient: Anime-styled profile pic that is kinda, sorta like me (Default)

Early Superman was way less dickish than he was in later decades. He was very much a defender of the poor and less fortunate, and fought against corrupted authority figures.

Superdickery was more of a Silver Age development.
