Same here, OP.

I can relate to this a little bit...there's at least one story that I really like but the grammar is just so bad that it's not as fun to re-read, as it was to read when I first discovered it

The second time I read a story I really enjoyed I suddenly noticed how many words the author used over and over. I tried to ignore it, but once you see it...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't think you're missing out on anything, you're saving your brain from illiteracy...why the hell would ANYONE want to read something written from people who don't have a basic grasp of grammar?

if i only knew how to boil water, would you come to my house for a Baked dinner with all the trimmings?

Considering the other secrets we've had about this subject lately, I'd say this isn't unusual. And I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with it, but of course it limits what you can read (which can lead to frustration).

This can happen as you get older. The errors become more blatant, and it can be difficult to switch off and enjoy.

Yeah, I sort of feel the same.

Not just the writing, but also the plot. There were days - in a dark hidden past - that I'd even enjoy the occasional Mary Sue fic.

If the story intrigues me, but the mistakes are making me batty, I cut and paste into a word file, run the spellcheck and grammar check, and then read anyway. I don't have to do it often though, because if the characters are right, and it's three a.m. (which is when I read far too much fanfic) I no longer care about grammar. Or spelling.

I do the same thing, or rewrite parts of it to make it readable to me. There are a lot of good storytellers, but not all storytellers are good writers. My edited copies live on my hard drive and no one ever sees them but me.

You get Boromir to go with Samwise. :-)

I get it, OP. Slightly different, but I used to be able to ignore bad characterization for the sake of a plot I liked or a fic kink being hit. Even now I can ignore a little badness in certain circumstances (rare pairings, for example), but sadly there would be way more ways to scratch my fandom itches if I could ignore bad grammar and ooc dialogue.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way with most published novels - I can spend hours browsing in the bookstore and never spend a single dollar, which probably irritates the shopkeepers.
But I'm actually a bit more lenient with fic - I can generally give it a pass, unless the flaws are too painful and insurmountable to read on.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not even sure how you guys manage to read forums, much less fanfic if you can't stand grammatical errors.

Granted, my english is hardly perfect so maybe I have no right to say anything, but it doesn't bother me to see typos here. I just correct it in my head and focus on the content.

[identity profile] with-rainfall.livejournal.com 2012-11-20 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think there's a difference between one grammatical mistake here and there, and a fic slathered with them, which shows the author just can't be bothered and/or doesn't have the skills to write. Of course, a "you're" in place of "your" in an otherwise good fic threw me right off just yesterday, so it varies. This stuff is very YMMV.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I've been assuming that the OP and people in this thread mean fic littered with bad grammar from an author who doesn't care or doesn't understand the basic rules, as opposed to occasional slips or typos.

(The forums I've belonged to have actually been surprisingly good about insisting you talk in real sentences without chatspeak -- not to say you couldn't use an LOL or OMG, but it shouldn't look like a text to your bff -- but they might be exceptions.)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Chatting with people is different from reading a story, though.

Heh, it's reversed for me. I'm able to ignore bad grammar and spelling much better than I used to be. I've kind of reached the "I don't give a fuck, just gimme my stories" years of my life. Maybe it will do the same for you, anon.

My position on this has evolved.

To start with I devoured and loved everything I could find for a pairing or a fandom I loved. Then I became more discerning and backbuttoned quickly out of fics with tons of grammatical errors or characterization problems, and now I've just about come around full circle where I have very few bullet-proof backbuttoners. For example, I read a lot of HP fic that might be full of grammar errors but contain cool plot or might have characterization problems but offer interesting insight on canon. I read and enjoy a lot of "bad" fic and not even in a teehee it's so bad it's hilarious way. I'm aware the fic has problems, but some element of the story makes the reading worthwhile for me.

But the hunt is what makes finding something good all the more satisfying!

At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

I think I'm more likely to read a fic with spelling errors than I would with a book book. Grammar, which I'm terrible at tbh, I don't always notice, so it's kind of a non-issue. Unless it's glaringly obvious I suppose.

First-person POV is pretty much my standby wariness warning though.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
I've become really picky as well - some time ago, I found a fic again which I loved to bits when I first started out in fandom years ago and was appalled at how bad it was. Might have had something to do with the fact that my grasp of the English language wasn't that great when I started reading English fanfiction...

I don't tend to backspace out of fic much, but I have become way more critical. it does sort of take the fun out of it if you can't enjoy it. Since I don't really read much fic these days I try to give them a chance though. Even if aspects of it bother me, like epithets. (they never used to piss me off but DEAR GOD do they now.)
