While I do enjoy more SMT games than just Persona, most of them don't make me want to do fandom things (like fic, art, discussion). I kinda just enjoy playing them, and don't feel a need to go beyond that.

"Becoming"? Ever since 3, Persona has been vastly more popular than the original SMT series. I'm not saying Persona is better (because in my opinion it isn't), but there's no question about it's popularity in both Japan and the west. The endless remakes and anime adaptations are proof enough of it.

I like Persona more than SMT, I think they are better games.

Because, y'know, I'm allowed to like things.

"The Persona series is sooooo much better"

Is this, like, an actual thing that people actually say, ever? Because I can understand "I like the Persona series better than the SMT series" and various iterations thereof, but assertions that it is objectively, qualitatively better?

Is this a thing that truly happens.

ngl, I'd love for someone to try and tell me why Persona is honestly better.

It probably also has a lot to do with the Persona games being easier to find copies of.

Yeah, I've only played Persona 3 and 4 because they're the most popular and were easy to find locally. I don't really know much about the SMT games. :X

I personally think the Persona games are easier to get into. I've played more non-Persona SMT games than Persona games, and they just don't grab my attention like the Persona ones do. And I think they're generally a bit harder (I'm looking REALLY hard at you, Nocturne!!), so that might be a factor?

I enjoy Persona, but let's hear it for the other SMT games, too!

Yes, Devil Survivor was one of my two favourite DS games (the other being The World Ends With You, so apparently I like the idea of being stuck in Tokyo with a 7 day deadline to do shit or something >_>). The sequel is damned good, too.

Persona games are more easily accessible and easier to get into. Also they have ~social links~ and don't make you pay so painfully for mistakes as much in battle.

That said I enjoy SMT more.

Thirding what other people have said; I think it's because they're so much more accessible than the SMT games. When was the last time you saw PS1 games in a store, for instance? Many places still sell PS2 games like hotcakes, and obv that's that Persona 3 and 4 are and why they've got a bigger fanbase.

Well, I also like the whole social-link structure. It reminds me of a dating sim. A dating sim mixed with an RPG! I also enjoy Harvest Moon games, so that just appeals to me more.

There are actually no SMT games on PSX in English. The English games in the main series are Nocturne (PS2), Strange Journey (Nintendo DS), IMAGINE (PC), and hopefully the upcoming SMT IV (Nintendo 3DS) (though, so far as I can tell, no information about if there will be an English translation is known as yet).

Which actually goes to your main point - most of the series just isn't available to the potential English-language fanbase, unless they can read Japanese or emulate them with fan translations (which, so far as I can tell only exist for the Super Famicom versions of the first two games).

It's not like SMT was all that popular to begin with (niche, etc.,). You act like the Persona series is stealing the fans away. Which is not the case. I think most of them haven't even heard of earlier installments in the series. And some Persona fans become overall SMT fans, so...

additionally, fuck smt iv for replacing kaneko with fucking soejima on the character art. soejima's a hack who needs to be kept away from smt.

I think both have their pros and cons - And now I'm going to be all rebel-like and say: I don't think SMT and Persona are that different.
Because they really aren't.
