Okay, I've seen a few episodes and Equestria always seemed like a "Love and tolerance" kind of place. Is that... not true? Or are these shippers just creating it for the anggggsssssssttttt?

Probably because Braeburn (the hatted pony) lives in a country/western town. With the ten gallon hats and western shootouts. I'm guessing fandom jumps to the 'country = homophobic' notion.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 12:10 am (UTC)(link)

Well that's...stereotypical.

...Wow. That's not a totally offensive assumption. Mmm'noooope.

That's not a reach for a lot of this fandom :/

But shouldn't the fandom reflect the teachings of the show? Oh wait, silly me, these are people we're talking about. Why should I expect that of any fandom?

It's for the angst and to stereotype. Because we ALL KNOW any and all Country folk are gonna be homophobic shits. Or anyone with a Southern/Country sounding accent. B/

That's just icky. I can maybe understand wanting the angst but there are SO MANY WAYS to bring angst into a relationship why do they have to pick the one that makes so little sense and can be offensive?

Bronies. That's why. Most of that fic is written by Bronies and they don't think about things like that. Well, very few do.

There has only been like..two stories I've come across that has handled a sensitive matter like that well. One was a Dizzy Doo fic.

But yeah.

I bet it's more than just them. It's something that tends to happen in other fandoms too. It's just... people.

But I'm sorry about your fandom. *hugs*

[personal profile] otakugal15 2012-11-22 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, it's ok...sorta. I just look at safe fanart, find the occasional good fic and watch the show. Bronies ruined the fandom for me ages ago and I just don't even bother with it anymore outside those things.

Do you have any fic recs on hand?

If you haven't read It's a dangerous business, going out your door, you should.

Read Ditzy Doo's Dismally Derpy Day. THAT is my headcanon for the grey, bubbly one.

He handled her well.

Bookish Delight is a decent author.

because fanfic writers are lazy. and they know that cheap angst sells

True. Sad but true.

The latter.

Not that the topics of homosexuality and homophobia are ever addressed in canon, but I have a hard time believing they'd be real issues in that setting, at least for most.

Well, at least the canon is a nice place to be even if the fandom isn't.
diet_poison: (Rainbow Dash - cool)

The canon is wonderful - one reason I love the show, and many others as well. It really can cheer me up to watch an episode or even just look at beautiful fanart and think about how peaceful life must be in Equestria...

There are nice parts to the fandom, too, but there's also a lot of shit. The pony porn is just gross and wtf and ew imo...apparently there are also a lot of people who can be giant dickbags but I haven't really run into any of those online. My involvement in the fandom is basically limited to viewing non-sexual fanart (some of which is really beautiful), listening to canon and fanmade music, and watching/talking about it with my friends irl. And sometimes looking at silly memes that one of my friends likes to show me.

There *is* one fic that I am partway through and really enjoying. It's a genfic with adventure and friendship and worldbuilding and it's really good. There are some romantic undertones but they aren't the focus of the story. But that fic was recced to me by a friend who also doesn't like pony porn (or any porn really) and I'm careful about going and looking for fic...with other fandoms, I like to read romance so I can search by pairing; with ponies I just want to read gen friendship fluff, and I don't get the urge to read fic as often anyway. Besides, if I stumble upon human porn by mistake it doesn't gross me out like that.

Well, the ponies of Ponyville were racist (they freaked out when Zecora showed up, because she was Different)...

But once they were told she wasn't evil they all seemed to accept her. I thought they more seemed to fear the unknown, what she and the Everfree Forest represent.

With the homophobia displayed in fics, the ponies would have to know what that means and then hate them for it.
