Functioning on limited sleep

[personal profile] ill_omened 2012-11-23 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm going to be working a night shift at my volunteer job, which is going to go straight into a day shift at my permanent job.

(opportunity I can't afford to miss on the volunteer job, and couldn't get the time off work the next day)

All told I'm going to have to remain physically active and mentally focused for in ideal circumstances about twenty six hours. I'm rather good at pushing my body on limited sleep, but not sure how going the duration rather then a string of standard days on a couple hours is going to differ.

I already drink an unhealthy amount of coffee anyway, and I've packed some caffeine tablets. Anything apart from that worth trying?

I've tried pulling a straight two day sewing marathon once or twice, when I've pushed my procrastination to the limit before cons. The one thing that really helps me focus is to remember to get enough protein and complex carbohydrates to keep you going. If you feel like you're crashing, have a burrito or something. Then move around a little bit, and drink some water. If you get any chance at all, take a break to sit down for a moment every now and then, or if you're sitting the whole time, get up and pace or shake your legs or something. It'll keep you from zoning out.

I used to go 24 hours straight about two times a month quite often before I moved (Mostly Fridays, with lectures in the day, then walking in the streets between 11 and 3 before then sitting in an open church from 4 to 7, then getting the first bus home at 8, then doing the same, minus lectures the night after.)

What I do is just to keep active, remember to eat and drink (not just coffee) and just remember that you can go to sleep the moment you get home.

Taking naps or breaks don't work for me, because the moment I fall asleep I am dead to the world for the next 12 or so hours.

Good luck though.

Seconding the avoidance of naps.

Even if you manage to limit yourself to a few minutes, you won't feel rested at all, you'll only feel even more tired.

Doritos and similar snacks used to give me a quick energy boost, although consider having protein-rich things like eggs, bananas, etc. for breakfast for a longer lasting boost.

Fellow nightshifter, have had to do this to accomodate dayshifters more times than I can count.

You need: constant stimulation, fresh air, not to get too warm, caffeine, and plenty of exercise. If you've got the time, go out on a run before your day shift, and take another one at lunch. Vigorous exercise will keep you up for a couple of hours.

Oh, and it probably goes without saying, but bank as much sleep as possible beforehand.

Bring a supply of 5-hour energy shots, and try to catch quick naps where you can.

Well I'm onto my 23rd hour of no sleep and going strong (nights + lots to do today).

Basically lots of coffee for me.

If I'm feeling desperate to stay awake I go for a quick walk. About 10mins worth.

There's pills like no-doze. I'm not keen on them personally.

Sometimes I take a 45 min nap. As in, I drink a cup of coffee, set my alarm, lie down and sleep for 45mins. Then I wake up. The 45 mins helps reset your brain a bit for another few hours of awake and by the time you wake the coffee has kicked in
