Yes. That would be fantastic. For example, think of ME3, remember how everyone was pissed off about Garrus and Tali getting together? What if they made it an option for Shepard to help it along? I think it would come less out of nowhere that way and the sense of accomplishment would help endear people to the ship.

Yea...idk how I felt about Garrus and Tali. I don't think I'd call what I felt pissed off, but it came out of nowhere and so I guess I had trouble believing or enjoying it. If we had the chance to set them up and see more of their interaction together (and feelings on the matter) I probably would've been 100% behind it.

Yeah, I was kind of "meh" to it too for similar reasons. There were quite a few pissed off people though. It was freaky.

But, yeah, that would have been a great side quest.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was more "out of nowhere" then Shepard propositioning Garrus and him accepting it.

And I say this as someone who doesn't ship anyone involved with another.

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-12-02 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't usually romance Garrus with my Shep's partially for that reason. I do like the idea of them together but the way it was first introduced felt sort of random and unsatisfying to me.

But several of the romances in ME should've been further developed imo, so I don't feel that way about just Garrus/Tali.

Yeah, it's a reason I wasn't able to get the Garrus romance in my first ME2 playthrough, because the options to start it just didn't seem IC since there was nothing in the first game. So my second Sheppard is going to go through the first game with the unspoken crush on Garrus thing in mind.

I do sort of love that staying IC and telling a good story are two of my main considerations when playing these games.

I haven't played ME3 yet but I have seen the Garrus/Tali scenes and I don't see why people have an issue with it. It seems pretty cute to me.

Yea, I don't care for the Garrus romance in ME2. (I did do it, and I do like some Shep/Garrus, but...yea.) In seems worlds better in ME3 (though I haven't played that romance myself yet, I've seen most the cutscenes) but by ME2 Garrus usually feels like my bff and without the option to say "I've loved you all along!" (or something equally sappy) I'm just not too into his romance. (Kaidan sorta had something like that with mShep in ME3, why not Garrus in ME2?)

I do sort of love that staying IC and telling a good story are two of my main considerations when playing these games.

I don't find that weird at all. I love going into an RPG with a specific personality for the main character and staying true to that. It's loads of fun!

I'm not sure why people hate those scenes, but I was pretty unaffected by them myself. If they had explored Garrus/Tali more and it hadn't been just the one scene, then I probably would've enjoyed it more.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Shep/Garrus does get a whole lot better in ME3. In ME2 it can be seen as 'two friends blowing off steam together' - I thought the awkwardness on Garrus' part was adorable, although I'll agree that it was kind of weird that he would just go 'uh sure!' Unless of course you have a headcanon where Garrus secretly had something for Shepard for a while and just doesn't want to admit it. ;)

The only lead up I saw to Garrus/Tali was their conversations over their comm link while on the Normandy in ME3. That whole 'I thought you didn't like things getting close' 'depends on who it is' convo in particular comes to mind. But when one of the writers' excuses for the pairing is 'they can eat the same food' ... yeah, I'm not going to be all that convinced.

The scene with them together is pretty cute though. But without much lead up it felt kind of random.

From the ME3 cutscenes I've seen Shep/Garrus is much sweeter, better written and more convincing in general. I'm just not in the mood for playing that game again to see for myself. One day...

Unless of course you have a headcanon where Garrus secretly had something for Shepard for a while and just doesn't want to admit it. That's always my head-canon for Shep/Garrus, but when ME2 went 'LOL NOPE' I wasn't too excited to actually play through the in-game romance. Still, ME2 clearly isn't the end, so at least their relationship was handled better after that point!

I don't even remember that conversation...lol. Maybe I missed hints, then.

It's true that I usually enjoy games for story first, gameplay second, but not every game really makes me feel like I am building a character whom I need to stay true to, at least to a certain extent.

I consider the conversations that Tali and Garrus can have before that scene to be pretty good development. Of course, it also does probably help if those two have been in your party the most, which is actually the case for my first playthrough, which is going to have the Tali/Garrus romance happen once I actually get around to playing ME3.
elaminator: (Mass Effect: Shep)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-12-03 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe! I don't remember many conversations between Tali and Garrus tbh... I don't think I've played with those two together since ME2, and even then it wasn't often. If they wanted to establish more of a friendship or relationship before that 'reveal' I think it would've been better suited for some sort of cutscene or more optional moments between them on the Normandy. But that's just me. They weren't awful or anything, by any stretch of the imagination.

But that's with nearly everyone who isn't Liara, isn't it? I tried Thane the last time and damn was that half-assed.
elaminator: (Mass Effect 2: Thane)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-12-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Thane's romance, but then again I just adore the character in general. I'm aware the romance could've been much better if they'd have spent more time on it, but I enjoyed it anyway.

Edited to say and of course people who romanced Thane got...uh...next to nothing in ME3, and that was majorly disappointing. However with the way the story goes...

Arg BioWare!

Spoiler

[personal profile] world_eater 2012-12-03 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
There was just so little to it, unless I missed something major. It was the same with Garrus, but I think for him they made up for it in ME3.
I didn't expect Thane to live, but at least a little more than a short make-out session and a letter.

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-12-03 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yea, you're right, there isn't much of it. It's a shame some of the romances were so bare bones, I just liked it despite that. Mass Effect romances make me miss Dragon Age romances.

Thinking about Thane's romance still depresses me a little. Loved it in ME2, in ME3 it was barely different from just being friends with him aside from an OOC make out session in the middle of the damn hospital.

And don't get me started on the rest....
elaminator: (Mass Effect 3: Liara)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-12-03 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
That make out session was almost all we had! So I took it gladly, lol. I try not to think about the Thane romance because I had held out hope there might be a magical cure, and of course that didn't happen. I just wanted them to be happy together. :/ I wasn't fond of the endings of ME3 but I def head-canon (since I didn't finish that play-through) the Shep that romanced Thane as dead. At least they can be together that way...

I DID however love that little moment where Kolyat says, "His wish was for you." Bawled so hard at that...

And I find Garrus/Shep way more believable than "Well, this guy you barely know has had a thing for you all along" and Liara's weird Prothean fetish/hero worship. Garrus and Shepard had established a genuine friendship and were just comfortable enough with each other to fumble towards something more.

Besides, if you're in the right mindset you can take their banter when they're reunited in Omega to be flirtatious.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
This so much. ME2 was my first Mass Effect, and when I picked up Garrus on Omega I was like wow is he ever flirtatious. Pretty sure that's exactly why I decided to romance him ;)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh, I would have liked that - just like how you can help EDI and Joker to get along.

Garrus/Tali felt weird to be. That one scene was cute though.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-12-03 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think the problem was that we got so little of it and it seemed to come out of nowhere. But yeah, EDI and Joker started in a pretty similar place but because Shepard was more involved it didn't seem as strange.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Even in ME2, EDI and Joker had a lot more 'lead-up' than Garrus and Tali. I can see why BioWare would let you have some influence on their relationship in ME3 since I can see people getting weirded out by the whole idea.

Those two aside, I'd have loved to help play matchmaker elsewhere - Liara and Feron come to mind. Maybe Zaeed and Chakwas? Hell, even Kaidan and Ashley in ME1. I love my Shepard, but everyone doesn't need to be Shepard-sexual. :P
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-12-03 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
True, I just think it wouldn't have taken that much to bring Garrus/Tali to Joker and EDI's ME2 level of relationship before going forward with the full romance.

Liara and Feron would be fantastic. I would have loved Tali/Kal'Reegar but they freaking killed him off screen.

Ahaha, yes, I always found Shepard sexuality amusing, especially if the Shepard in question is unspeakably ugly and/or a horrible person.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh same here. And I was going to add Tali/Kal but I'm STILL bitter at how they handled him. Or didn't. *grumble*

Honestly it makes my renegade playthroughs kind of hilarious. Here I am, committing genocide, sabotaging the genophage, socking admirals in the stomach and generally telling everyone off and my entire crew wants in my Shepard's pants. Sure a few people would find that hot but, really?! Haha.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-12-03 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I just pretend the news is wrong. In all that confusion? Some information has to be sketchy at best.

Ahaha, that is the exact reason why my Renegade playthrough is single. They don't deserve a romance so nice.
