10: Hahahaha, I completely agree. I understand what people are saying about commissions, but that is someone specifically asking you to draw character X for them. And I think a lot of people who want artist ___ to draw ___ from ____ know that that artist does art for that series. (Not the case all the time, of course, but usually) I watch a guy who draws a lot of Naruto stuff. And his commissions are Naruto characters or Naruto fan characters 90% of the time. There is another person who does pretty much only HP stuff... and the FMA person, and on and on.

I understand it's hard to make money on prints sometimes, but I don't think that excuses the fact that you try to make money off of a series you know nothing about. Selling prints is very borderline legal as it is. And, if the picture used is related, that makes this hilarious. She has a published series, and if someone made prints from her series, I think she would throw a tantrum. But it would be just like other people making prints from manga or anime series. What if they didn't even buy her books? Don't you think that is painful, having someone make money off of a series that they didn't help in any way?

Hey OP, good secret, I agree.

... why? What does it matter?

I don't know. I know I wouldn't give a flying toaster if someone who drew an awesome fanart of a character I liked didn't know anything about the character. I'm buying it for the visual appeal, after all. They do a good job? They can have my money. It's an exchange of a service for money.

Pffft. Dude, what? I think she'd find it the best thing ever.

Really? Didn't she get angry when people colored her lineart for personal practice?

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
She has issues with people using her art that she physically drew, especially when it's taken from your locked journal. That and traces. But fanwork? She loves fanwork. And as she sells print of published works herself I think that if someone drew a print of her series for selling she'd be amazingly flattered and excited. I'd put a good amount of money down that she'd even buy it from the person.

Tell me how coloring her line art for fun and/or practice and throwing it up on a public gallery GIVING HER CREDIT is any different than the people who color the Bleach or Naruto chapter covers? Are Bleach and Naruto colorings more acceptable simply because the actual artist can't tell them to knock it off in person? There's no harm in it if they're not trying to pass it off as their own. Or I bet it only applies to the people who can color real nice, but all those other losers who really suck at it will get berated for stealing.

I'll tell you honestly: I have not seen the incident you are referring to, if it did happen, because your previous comment sounds like you're not sure either. Was it something from her comic? Because right now I'm assuming it was something from her art journal, which is locked and I know for a fact she has zero-tolerance for seeing anything she posts there posted elsewhere, for practice or wallpaper showing-off or whatever.

Also to get back at your more original point, people who buy fanart really could care less if the artist knows about the canon or not. It sounds to me it's less about whether it's allowed and more if there's artistic integrity in a picture, and if paying off your bills survive entirely on making a good pull in, you better believe selling out to the mainstream is the easiest way to make a profit in Alley working.

Actually, I'm the starter of this little topic, and that last anon post wasn't mine. (Though I have to admit I was very amused by the last sentence, who ever posted that)

Yes. It bothers me that pictures like this have no integrity. My morals scream how wrong it is, so I guess because I wouldn't do it and am so against it, it bothers me when other people do it. I understand that people want/need to make money at Artist Alleys, but if it is really necessary for someone to get money from fanart prints, (sorry, time for me to sound like an ass) maybe they should GET A JOB. I'm an artist who regularly participates in Artist Alleys, but I know that I'm not going to make a living selling prints during various weekends during the year. No, I like to eat, so I have a different job. Sure, I'd love to live off of my work, but I know (At least at this point in time) I will not be able to support myself solely off of my art yet.

I guess it all comes down to a difference of morals.
