Looks like it.

And here I thought we broke all the time-turners at the end of book five. =/

I judge Lilly because she had a stupid hair colour!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
What is this about?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
In Harry Potter, Lily Evans (later to be Lily Potter) was a childhood friend of Snape (who was basically in love with her), who ended her association with him over him being a racist prick.

Parts of fandom got really angry at her over this, because they loved / identified with Snape and hated James Potter for whatever dumb fandom reasons, and many brouhahas ensued, arguing that she should have stayed friends with Snape, gotten romantically involved with him, etc.

I honestly thought it was all kind of in the past now; it really seems kind of silly, from this vantage point. But I guess not, or something.

In fairness, whenever we see James in flashbacks, he's a major prick, as well. Rowling never really bothered to show him becoming the good man Lily ended up marrying; it was just, "Oh, he was a jerk, but he got better, just take my word for it". Yeah... show don't tell, Jo.

Snape is the fandom's darling.

This means that they all hate Lily for dumping him as a friend. After all, all he did was hang around with a groups of magic-extremists who wanted her kind dead then call her a slur in public when she tried to help him.

Totally reasonable!

I'm assuming this anon means she unfortunately went through something similar with an abusive friend, which I'm sorry for, but seems a little late off the bat.

Basically if someone is in love with you, even if he/she is a racist dick who willingly hangs out with others who hate your kind and wish you dead (but it's okay because YOU'RE not like the others), he/she is entitled to your reciprocated feelings and it is your duty to stand by him/her and be totally cool with it. After all, he/she wouldn't act so terribly if you'd just love him/her the way he/she loves you.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it is only true if it is a he. If it is a she, she is just an obsessive fangirl or really creepy even if you actually do love her back (see Ginny re: Harry).

Anyone who faults Lily for ending her friendship with Snape is a douche too stupid to live, and I say this as someone who only read the series because of Snape.

Yeah, I'm not sure how someone can have read the series and not get that that was literally the last straw for Lily. It wasn't just what we saw in book 5 (where I thought Lily was the only person in that flashback who came out of it looking like a decent person, something I say with all honesty though my heart aches for Remus because I wish he would've done something), it was a build-up of that. Snape was hanging out with proto-Death Eaters. She was patient with him for far longer than most people would've been.

But. That's Snape-fen for you. He can do no wrong in their eyes. At this point, it's pointless to argue, since they're reading an entirely different book series than the rest of us.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a picture of Snape, not Lily.

I'm sorry you went through that, OP. :(

And I agree with you; it's horrible that people bash Lily for making what was probably a very hard decision to end a long-time friendship with a dangerous person.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I seriously have no time for people who bash Lily.

HOW DARE SHE NOT REQUITE HIS FEELINGS LIKE SHE IS CLEARLY OBLIGATED TO DO.

HOW DARE SHE NOT BE TOTALLY OKAY WITH HIM HANGING AROUND EXTREMIST BIGOTS WHO WANT HER DEAD, WHAT A CONTROLLING BITCH.

HOW DARE SHE END THEIR FRIENDSHIP AFTER HE CALLED HER A SLUR.

HOW DARE SHE MOVE ON AND HAVE A FULFILLING LIFE AND MARRIAGE.

HOW DARE SHE DIE FOR HER FAMILY AND MAKE SNAPE FEEL GUILTY ABOUT GETTING HER KILLED.

Seriously piss off.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
If I had a friend who was hanging out with racist extremists who called me slurs at school and gave me death-glares all the time, I'd tell them to chose between my friendship and the friendship with their racist friends. Then I'd end the friendship.

The James thing still bugs me though. A teenager who bullied other kids just for the lolz, and regularly, would have to go through major changes for me to consider even being friends with them, let alone hooking up with them. The fact that they started going out in 7th year rubs me the wrong way, that's not long enough for James to completely turn around in my opinion. I think he and Lily needed space, and should have hooked up after school when they'd both done some growing up, maybe while fighting in the war. That would have made more sense to me. As it stands, Lily did the right thing in ending her friendship with Sev, but the wrong thing in going out with a bully who all of the sudden changed in the course of a year or so.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-07 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
James didn't need to "completely turn around". It never said anywhere that he bullied kids all the time. The books said he hexed people for fun, which ALL the students do. Like, even Harry does this! They're all known for it. I mean, Levicorpus was the fad that year, everyone was using it on each other. I mean, James and Sirius were compared to Fred and George by the profs. If the profs were fond enough of them, I highly doubt they were the bullies fandom makes them out to be. Not to mention they wouldn't be well-liked and admired, like the text says they were time and time again.

James and Snape specifically had a rivalry. The bullying went both ways. Even Lily herself points this out: "Why are you so obsessed with them anyways?" (Lily was smart and kind, she would NOT say this if James was constantly bullying Snape mercilessly.) And Snape was trying to show her that they weren't as good as everyone thought they were... which means Lily didn't think that badly of James in the first place. And his only real argument against him? It was that James snuck around at night with a werewolf. Which didn't fly with Lily.

I've never judged Lily. I love Snape too, but a lot of people get reeeally irrational about him.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-14 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I AGREE ON SO MANY LEVELS.
Firstly, I take HUGE issues with the misogynistic idea that women's love is somehow "earned" by whichever guy "wants her the most". She has her own feelings, and those feelings were for James. Even if Snape had done nothing wrong, SHE CHOSE JAMES. That's her choice and she has a right to it. Deal with it.
Secondly, I do feel bad for Snape because he bitterly regretted what he had done - but he was lucky she stayed friends with him as lon as she did. If you really care about someone, you do not participate in a movement that views them and their family as subhuman, even if all the cool Slytherin kids are doing it. It's disrespectful and the sign of a real character flaw, plus it undermines the supposed value they feel for you. Would you encourage a Muslim friend of yours to hang around with someone who really wants to join the EDL and calls her a Paki? (This actually happened to my friend...she ditched him, and we were ALL GLAD). Or a gay friend to hang around with someone who is constantly homophobic? Yes, he has his own problems, but Lily has the right to want to get something out of their friendship, and it's shown that at the time this happened things were getting really dangerous for her because of her background.
Thirdly, I feel like fandom blows how horrible James was (and, actually, Sirius too) out of proportion. He acted like a complete arse to Snape (probably partially out of rivalry for Lily's affections), but there are signs his character change wasn't a complete 180. This is a person who not only stood by his friend when he was outed as a werewolf when it was a huge deal and most people would shun him (this is another beef I have with Snape, his constant stalking/bullying of Remus, he was willing to absolutely destroy a completely harmless person's life for arbitrary reasons just to get one over their friends. Sirius' prank was absolutely awful and the worst thought out thing ever, but he's I can understand why Snape pushed his buttons - not only would Snape's aping of/desperation to be the sort of bigoted Slytherin Pureblood that Sirius' family, who made his life a misery, were, bound to rub him the wrong way, but picking on Remus...I've got friends who are vulnerable for reasons beyond they're control - trans*, mental health issues - and anyone with similar friends will know it triggers a protective instinct; anyone fucks with them, BERSERK BUTTON.) but worked hard for years to try and make his condition easier for him to bear. He also took Sirius into his home to get him our of his toxic family environment. There are plenty of signs that James had the makings of a great person, and it seems like fandom wilfully ignores them in favour of defining his character by one scene in which he acts like a complete dick.
Lily's lovely.
