Terminology Question
(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)Is there a word for someone who believes a God or gods exist, but doesn't worship them? I'm thinking someone like Batman or Harry Dresden, who live in a universe where they know gods exist, and may have interacted with them, but for whatever reason don't *worship* them. The closest I've been able to find via wiki-ing is a henotheist, who might believe in a pantheon of gods, but only worships one of them.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)Google defines theism as belief in a god/s, so theist would work. It also makes sense - atheist (doesn't believe in deities), theist (believes in one or more deities).

Re: Terminology Question
Misotheism, "hatred of the gods", stemming from the belief that gods denied worship suffer. You believe in a god's existence but don't worship them.
Dystheism, the belief in a god that is not wholly good.
Re: Terminology Question
(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:08 am (UTC)(link)Deism requires belief in one or more gods, but rejects revelation i.e. we as humans are capable of knowing the existence of god(s) through our own experience. Whilst deism doesn't require worship, it does seem to be more specific than pure-terms theism.
However, the reader's perception of theism is often through a single god, major religion glass, which can severely colour the perception. If you are writing a fic I would suggest starting with deism, simply because your readers are less likely to assume they know what you mean by it.
Re: Terminology Question
As a practical matter, the vast majority of Classical polytheists would have agreed that there were probably gods - minor ones, but still gods - whose names they didn't even know, much less worshipped.
