Terminology Question

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, FS. There's something that's been bothering me on and off for a while, and I figured the commenting masses might be able to help me, so here goes:
Is there a word for someone who believes a God or gods exist, but doesn't worship them? I'm thinking someone like Batman or Harry Dresden, who live in a universe where they know gods exist, and may have interacted with them, but for whatever reason don't *worship* them. The closest I've been able to find via wiki-ing is a henotheist, who might believe in a pantheon of gods, but only worships one of them.

Deist.

Deist, I believe, is a belief in a specific kind of god - a distant, abstracted, watchmaker god. It implies belief in a certain kind of god, not a certain kind of relation to that god. AFAIK.

All the Deists I know believe in God but don't want to have anything to do with Him/Her/It. She/He/It just exists and doesn't affect how they go about doing things.

You might want to go with "theist"?

Seconding this.

Google defines theism as belief in a god/s, so theist would work. It also makes sense - atheist (doesn't believe in deities), theist (believes in one or more deities).

So I started with the tv tropes page for Flat Earth Athiest, which linked me to Nay Theist (knows god/s exist, doesn't worship them). From there, I got a few suggestions for terms that won't make people look at you like you're crazy:

Misotheism, "hatred of the gods", stemming from the belief that gods denied worship suffer. You believe in a god's existence but don't worship them.

Dystheism, the belief in a god that is not wholly good.

I think "theist" or "deist" are your best options. Theism requires belief in a god of some description, but shouldn't really impose worship on the individual. Unfortunately, the meaning has evolved into something more like the major single deity religions.

Deism requires belief in one or more gods, but rejects revelation i.e. we as humans are capable of knowing the existence of god(s) through our own experience. Whilst deism doesn't require worship, it does seem to be more specific than pure-terms theism.

However, the reader's perception of theism is often through a single god, major religion glass, which can severely colour the perception. If you are writing a fic I would suggest starting with deism, simply because your readers are less likely to assume they know what you mean by it.

Polyapatheist? Someone who agrees that many gods exist and just doesn't care? Okay, I just made that up.

As a practical matter, the vast majority of Classical polytheists would have agreed that there were probably gods - minor ones, but still gods - whose names they didn't even know, much less worshipped.

Nonreligious theist, is what I'd say. Believes that god(s) exist, doesn't feel motivated to do anything about it.
