Especially when they aren't that good! I mean (if we're talking about the same fandom), some of the ones that get recc'd so often are cute but pretty OOC and implausible and meh. But there's just so much fic production that I don't feel comfortable wading in and looking for goodfic myself, so I have to rely on recs. Dilemma!

I get you OP. It's a bit awkward isn't it? There's huge output and some amazing works, but it's at the point where I don't even know where to go for recs anymore.

(at risk of being wanky, we're talking about Teen Wolf right? Cause the general standard of fanart is amazeballs and that pretty much makes up for it.)

Where is the Teen Wolf fanart? My involvement with fandom is to go to the TW tag on AO3 and sort by Most Kudos. I have no idea where the rest of fandom hangs out.

Tumblr has lots of pretty fanwork. :)

Tumblr. It's kind of scary, have to admit.

If you're willing to browse, though, there's lots of cool graphics and fanart to be found.

I am woefully behind on the master workings of Tumblr. What tags do you search for, just Teen Wolf? I hear that it's a great place, and I even have an account, I just haven't figured it out yet. LJ is dying, so I guess I should hop over to the new hot spot huh?

The stories that get recced in any fandom are the ones that appeal to a large amount of people. Depending on the fandom and the specifics of the rec list, many of these are total shit. That's just the way it is, and not liking the "classics" doesn't need to be a secret.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
So much this. I've seen so many fics that are "must-reads" but turn out to be total crap.

Saw this and thought Wolfstar* because I saw this pic in the tag a while ago for it. And the same things do tend to get recced over and over again. Yeah, Shoebox Project is great but it's not finished, and I'm not a huge fan of Moonlight and Casting Shadows. Can we, as a group of shippers, move on?

*For those who don't know, Wolfstar is a pairing in Harry Potter, Sirius Black/Remus Lupin.

They were my first thought too <3

OP

and you would be correct :)

I thought Remus/Sirius too! I don't get all the love Fairy Boys. I love Remus/Sirius, I love Velvet Goldmine, I do NOT get all the hype over that fic.

WHERE IS THE PENIS? MORE DOGGIE COCKS PLEASE

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Man, if you are talking about Teen Wolf - I feel you.

The annoying one that ALWAYS gets recced - and I never remember the name - but I'll click on it and be like 'HOW ARE ADULT PEOPLE RECCING THIS OVER AND OVER' (It's the AU where Sterek learns to watch Doctor Who together...it's long and just...obviously written by someone in high school, SORRY WRITER.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
OMG THAT FIC IS JUST TERRIBLE.

But like, everyone insists its a must read. But it's just so boring.

What I really hate though and it's driving me up the walls lately is that people are post chapters of WIP as a part of a series. No. Just label it as a WIP and move on. When I read fic, I check on Ao3 that it's complete. I get so pissed when I get to the end, and it's not a complete or a stand-alone fic, it's part of a series that hasn't been updated in months. Ugh personal rant over.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly can't believe I read the whole thing. I am not an architect, but through grad school/my career I know how architecture works...and that fic makes my fucking SOUL HURT in terms of knowing nothing. BUT EVERYONE (mainly I think teenagers who aren't adults and have been through college, jobs, and grad school) think its amazing. I spend most of my time thinking 'Only really weird adults hang out with kids in high school this much..... AND YES I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. Seriously - there are a few on my 'In Progress' folder like that, and it's just frustrating beyond belief.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
That one gets a lot of recs? Wow. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of the number one AU recs in Teen Wolf.

I read it all (I was volunteering that day, and it was that or do actual work) and I then spent the rest of the night raging about it.

It's not horribly written, but the plotting and some of the facts reeks of someone in high school writing it. And as an adult, nothing throws me out of a fic faster than basic ADULT LIFE concepts being fucked up.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Yeah, I never would have ever guessed that one as a most recced fic. We're talking about "The Rory to my Amy" series right? I couldn't remember the name so I just went and looked it up.

Hah, I hated that one too. That and the one where (non-AU) Derek ends up writing children's books? It's not quite as bad, but it's just so...long and frustrating and recc'd so often, I don't even know.

Also, yes, "DILF" is very cute and well written from a technical standpoint, but it's basically AU enough to be original fiction for me. I wish people would calm down about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
So I went through Teen Wolf fic like crazy at the beginning of the Fall, after I pounded through both seasons and I bookmarks a bunch of fics. This past week I have been going through them and reading, and I remember reading the child book writer Derek non-AU and being like 'Oh this is not at all up my alley. And holy fuck, what did you name their children' - but for some reason I bookmarked it. (I then unbookmarked it....) So, I really don't understand that one, except that it's FULL OF ANGST, but that is another rec I JUST DON'T GET.

DILF is one of my favs, but honestly my favorite fics in fandom tend to be the AUs, because I don't have to deal with differing ideas about canon. It's really hard for me to enjoy some Teen Wolf fic, because we see canon VASTLY different, while in AUs it's still a basic set-up, but in figuring its own canon. - That being said, the rabid, weird Tumblr girl fans of that fic need to take it down a few knocks.

Also, I am just so happy I am not the only one to NOT understand that fic's popularity at all. I still roll my eyes the amount its recced on Tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Furry fandom or Teen Wolf? (I mean, I'm pretty sure I know, but why you wouldn't just use a picture from the dang show eludes me...)

Sidenote: I really wish there actually was a fandom for wolves. They're awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-16 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I had a bit of this feeling while I was in the Transformers fandom. Prowl/Jazz are, like, 60% of the fanfic output of the fandom.

This erked me because I had a ship that was just rare enough not to get much favvouritism, but not "rare" enough to be considered a "rare pairing" (which I feel gets conflated sometimes with "crack pairings", insomuch as so-called "rare pairings are only called that because they're pairing people never consider most of the time).

*Ranty Mimi is ranty.*

I think I have faint shades of this in SPN too, because I damn well well wish there was more Michael/Dean fic (I have found all of one fic that does it, and two others with implications), preferably fic that attacks all the thorny issues about Dean's distrust of Michael because of the whole vessel issue and Zachariah's way of getting his consent.
