I don't think eugenics is necessarily unworkable or by it's very nature evil.

I agree with you, and so does just about every other woman on the planet, or upwards of 90% of fetuses with Down's syndrome wouldn't be aborted, like they are today.

Every other woman =/= women who have aborted Downs syndrome fetuses

Me neither. We already do prenatal screening for several genetic or developmental defects, so why not take a more proactive stance.

But doing prenatal screening is for the purpose of giving parents information - not forcing a choice on them they don't want to make. I mean seriously that's such a leap.

I'd make that choice. Cause I refuse to bring a child into the world that will suffer. And I don;t have the wits nor patience to care for such a child.

But I agree, it's not forcing them. It's up to the individual families to make that decision.

Eugenics is evil when it's used to "prevent poverty" or curb the population of certain minorities

I don't either. The sterilizing people part, no, but the abortion part I don't have a problem with.

I find that mildly revolting.

Not forced on other people. But by the parents' choice. And yeah, it's an unpopular opinion. I have a hard time having a problem with abortion.

I think think having an abortion because you think something is ~wrong~ with your child is really gross. Which is in and of itself an unpopular opinion in some circles...

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Different anon.

If I have a child with genetic defects, I'll abort the child. I know life will be very difficult for the child and I very likely won't be there to take care of him or her or advocate for his or her care when I'm old or dead. I love my children and as a parent, my children are my responsibility, not the responsibility of my relatives or my other children or the society. I choose to abort and not bring such a child into the world because I can't guarantee the care of my child and I don't want him or her to suffer.

I'm sick because I care about my child's well-being? Interesting.

If you think a kid is better off dead than disabled, and better off dead than a "burden to society"? Yeah, you're sick.

Nope. Why bring a child into the world that will only suffer? That's even more sick imo.

Honestly? I think this response is a real cop-out. There is NO WAY you can guarantee that life won't be difficult for your children. You don't know what they're going to go through even if they're perfectly healthy, genetically speaking. And deciding for someone that their life will be too difficult for them to want to live it is really wrong imo.

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
If my mother had followed your reasoning, I'd never have been born!

It's a sign of weakness and selfishness on the part of the parent if he or she can't bear to raise a child with "genetic defects," not a sign of responsibility and love. Behind the statement "I don't want him or her to suffer" is the sense of "I don't want to suffer through this child."

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Different anon, but I think that depends on what sort of "problem" we're talking about here. I personally don't agree with aborting a baby because they have Down's Syndrome, but something like Tay-Sachs, where they'd basically have 0 quality of life and would be in pain and miserable for most of their existence? I would personally think the better choice would be to abort. But those sort of decisions are a very personal thing, and it can also be a very slippery slope when it comes to where people draw the line.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-12-18 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I mean yeah if we're talking about a disease that will cause a few months or years of suffering before certain death? That's one thing. But it's completely possible for a person with Down's syndrome to live a long and fulfilling life.

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

[personal profile] otakugal15 2012-12-19 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
This is what most of us are thinking (i hope anyway). Havinga child with Asperger's? No, never abort. Downs? No. But one where they are forever confined to chair or bed and can't LIVE in any form of the word? Yes, abort. Cause it's too sad.

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

NA

You do realize most people will abort a fetus with Down Syndrome or other serious genetic problems? It's pretty normal (at least where I am- abortion is covered and is a non-controversial issue). I don't see the issue with aborting if the fetus isn't healthy. The only people I see who do are crazy Republicans like Sarah Palin.

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-12-18 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I do realize that, but that doesn't make it okay. And your perspective isn't very complete if you think the only people who think that isn't okay is Palin-types.

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
And I think anyone who's pro-eugenics has no right to consider themselves pro-choice.

What you do with your zygotes is your own business, but mandating or forcing people to have abortions that they don't want is every bit as much of an assault on reproductive rights as mandating or forcing them to carry to term.
