Alright F!S, if I wanted to get into Star Wars...where would I start.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Episode IV - A New Hope is my recommendation. It's the first of the original series of films (yes, they released IV, V, VI then I, II, III).

For a start, they're generally better. Secondly, a lot of the nuances of the prequels assumes that you are familiar with the original films.

Get the earlier original versions if you can. Where Greedo did not shoot first and such. See the actual work and not the later alterations when lucas lost it.

'Where Greedo did not shoot first and such'
Not OP but does that titbit actually matter?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
No. It's a fraction of a second moment that pretty much makes Greedo a really bad shot instead of making Han a cold-blooded killer. And it has no bearing on anything else.

AYRT I think Greedo was important when it was changed, but wouldn't have mattered so much if it had always been like that. What I really object to is the excessive and relatively poor CGI they added in. Pointless and a poor fit.

listen to noodles, watch the 1993 vhs remasters and not the new dvd remasters

Someone also pointed out that watching them in numerical instead of chronological order ruins one of the big reveals in Part V. Granted, most people know it already, but still...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
This is why the optimal order is "Machete Order": IV, V, II, III, VI

Original Trilogy's your best bet. As for PT, they're decent but problematic movies. Both clone wars cartoons are quite good. Not sure where to start with the comics tho.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
original trilogy! a new hope, emperor strikes back, return of the jedi \o/

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely the original trilogy. Then read the Zahn books.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
good luck...the old movies have not ages well at all, and the new ones are crap

Don't.

Watch Star Wars: A New Hope. If you like it decently, and think it's entertaining, watch Empire Strikes Back, then watch 2 of the prequels - Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith - and then watch Return of the Jedi. Don't ever watch Phantom Menace.

This is the optimal watching order. But if you're not going to be into it, then you're not going to be into it.

Honestly, in my opinion I think they should still watch Phantom Menace. Qui-Gon is the best character in the entire prequel trilogy, so it's worth it just for that. (And Attack of the Clones is HORRIBLE, ten times worse than PM.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Qui-Gon is played by an amazing actor, but I don't think he's a great character, at least not as presented in the film itself.

And I think Phantom Menace is ultimately a much worse movie than Attack of the Clones - they're both poorly made movies (all three prequels are - Revenge of the Sith is by far the best and it's barely mediocre) but Attack of the Clones is just a poorly executed, bland, overwrought, overstuffed, poorly-produced, poorly-acted bad action movie, whereas Phantom Menace completely fails at even the most basic elements of movie-making. I'm not defending either as a good movie, but Attack of the Clones has a basic coherence that Phantom Menace lacks, for me.

Qui-Gon is awesome, but, excuse me. OBI-WAN. He was the sole reason I kept with the prequels (besides the really awesome slashable chemistry between him and anakin in number III. otherwise, Attack of the Clones is a horrid movie).

I'd rather skip AotC entirely. TPM and RotS man.

Watch Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, then Empire Strikes Back, then Return of the Jedi.

After that, take a break and let those movies percolate in your subconscious and ingrain themselves in your mind for however long you want.

Then watch Episode I: The Phantom Menace, then Attack of the Clones, then Revenge of the Sith. Preferably with a friend, so you can go "but wait, huh?" to someone every time you think it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
There's really no reason to watch Phantom Menace

except maybe as part of a drinking game or something but that movie is real bad

Qui-Gon is a great reason to watch Phantom Menace. :|

In my opinion, watch the original trilogy first, then the prequels. Go ahead and watch all of them, I'd say--the prequels aren't nearly as good as the originals, and (as you can probably tell from this thread!) there's a lot of reasons why people do or don't like any of the movies in the prequel trilogy, but I think it's important to watch them all and make your own opinion on them rather than relying on popular opinion.

If you're interested in the extended universe after watching the movies, then I'd suggest Timothy Zahn's star wars novels and, if you're into video games, the Knights of the Old Republic games.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Nth-ing start with the original trilogy, without the "special edition" remastering if you can. But the special editions aren't inherently *horrible*. I got into Star Wars myself by way of the special edition theatrical releases. To the point where I had a Star Wars themed Bat Mitzvah.

Once you've watched those, it depends on where you want to go. I'm an old-school EU fan myself, so I love the Zahn books and accept at least broad strokes canon of everything from A New Hope through the first couple books of NJO. Of the EU novels, I recommend anything by Zahn plus the X-wing books. I have a soft spot in my heart for the other old-school novels, since teenage me *adored* them, but I'll admit that most of them are actually pretty terrible in retrospect.

I'm not a huge fan of the prequel era, so I haven't watched or read most of the stuff set then. I do recommend at least watching episodes 1-3 once to know what's going on there, but the main reason I'd suggest it is so that you have a background for watching the Clone Wars cartoon, which I've heard is fantastic. I haven't watched it, but it does look interesting and well done.

My own experience as a Star Wars fan consisted of getting hooked on the original trilogy, devouring most of the EU novels available up through when the prequels came out, kind of souring on the movies then, and then mostly giving up on the official canon as New Jedi Order got darker and darker. But the Galaxy Far, Far Away in my head? Still one of my favorite fictional places ever.
