I've known a few Patrice's in my day, and while I would never actually act like Robin I find it funny because she's basically what I wished I could do/was feeling.

It's like Barney. Or pretty much anyone on that show. In real life they'd all be jerks or whatever, but as overblown characters on a television show I find it funny and fun.

Don't watch the show but see a lot of the Robin/Patrice stuff through Tumblr gifs so I'm wondering: is Patrice like Jerry from Parks and Rec in that he's a nice guy who has never done anything to anyone but being the butt of everyone's bullying is the show's running joke, or is she like Janice from Friends in that she can be obnoxious and just rub you the wrong way? Because if it's the former... I find it really distasteful (especially since Patrice is an overweight woman of colour in a show full of white people) and can't for the life of me understand why those R/P moments get so much Tumblr fangirling and circulation.

Basically she's a real, genuinely nice person whose overly eager and way too nice attitude bugs the crap out of Robin. No matter how much even she admits Patrice doesn't deserve it.

Patrice is a genuinely nice person who gets treated like shit because of the reasons you mentioned and also because she's not conventionally attractive and because she's considered socially awkward. Basically, the other characters are all assholes, and I'm beginning to think that Patrice is the only decent person on that show.

I really fucking loved it when she told off Barney. I wish that would have stuck a little bit better.

I guess some people would call her "overeager," but pretty much all she ever does is try to be nice to people, and I really don't like how SHE gets called out for "being creepy" when Barney almost NEVER gets called out for that in a serious way, even though he's much, much worse.

I agree, OP.

I didn't like it at the beginning but I'm starting to find it funny.

Objectively I don't like it because Patrice is just really nice and she is really genuine in her attempts to be nice to Robin.

But the way that Robin screeches at Patrice makes me laugh everytime.

It's one of the MANY reasons I can't watch this show anymore. (Which is sad cause I loved the first few seasons)

the only reason i am "ok" with it is that Cobie Smulders' screeching voice is fucking hilarious to me. seriously i laugh my ass off every time. but yeah Patrice is overeager and I can understand finding her annoying but it's a bit much.

however [SPOILER] it seems that might lighten up now with Robin reaching a point of clarity with her. She might still find Patrice annoying but at least she's calmed down a lot and doesn't hate her anymore.

Yeah, I love most everything about Robin, but the way she treats Patrice is quite abominable. But then, pretty much all the characters, at one time or another, act in ways that are pretty much hilarious in context but would be abominable in real life.

I find this running joke very annoying. Never found it funny

I personally find it disgusting to learn that she dates Barney in the later seasons. How awful.

Robin needed more flaws. Out of the group she seems too together.

In some critic's review of the episodes that just aired this week, he said that he's now confident that Robin's treatment of Patrice is another aspect of the unreliable narration of the show and what we see is only a reflection of Robin's perception of how she acts with Patrice and that she's actually not nearly as mean to Patrice as she thinks she is.

I'm choosing to buy into this.

I don't agree, and here's why:

Everyone on this show is dysfunctional, and they treat each other terribly. It's been acknowledged, and it's part of the humor. They represent what we would be if we turned off our filters and actually acted upon our feelings and impulses.

I wouldn't be friends with them. But I will watch them, and I will sympathize with them, because they are my catharsis.

Wow! OP I was just looking for a graphic to make this exact secret!! Never bothered me til this season how Robin treats Patrice.

Patrice is basically a Mary Sue. She rags on Patrice because everything Patrice does is perfect sun-shiny rainbows. She doesn't have a bad thought or feeling about anyone or anything and is obsessive in thinking that she and Robin are friends because, in her eyes, Robin is perfect. Again, she thinks nobody can do any wrong. It's obnoxious to people like Robin who deal with flaws and issues like a real person would. Robin does not believe in miracles or fairy tales where Patrice is the exact opposite.

If I'm being totally honest, I've known a few Patrices that I've wanted to treat the same way Robin treats Patrice. You know, that one super obnoxious person who you just want to be realistic/have a bad day/open their eyes just once in their life?

idk, I don't mind it so much. She's basically my internal monologue when I have to deal with people like her. It's that irrational hatred of people who are too nice. Also, it's a sitcom so - especially this late in the game - the characters hardly act realistically.

Robin's hatred for Patrice was first shown in The Stinson Missile Crisis, when Patrice said that Barney, who Robin was in love with at the time, was dreamy. So that really annoyed her. I guess Patrice just continued to get on Robin's nerves after that as she was getting more frustrated with her own life. Plus, as shown recently, Patrice may be a really nice person, but she's almost creepily obsessed with Robin.

When I was in middle school, there was a girl who was obsessed with me. She thought I was her best friend. She followed me around, did the things that I did, wore the same clothes as me, cut her hair the way that I did, claimed to like the things that I liked, did everything she could to get paired up with me for assignments. Through it all, she was unfailingly nice.

She was also, as a result of her obsessiveness, one of the most annoying people I have ever met.

To me, she is represented in Patrice.

PREACH IT. One of the many reasons I disliked season 7 Robin. She used to be my favorite character /sigh
