Agreed. All of them look like dwarfs except him. But that had to have a sexy one so he could have a love interest. *sigh* I'll go back and watch the LOTR movies and pretend this one doesn't exist.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
But why?

You people can't explain that. You just say, "'cause he can't" and "'cause Tolkien didn't intend it." The vague canon description doesn't matter, because the genius Tolkien scholars can totally tell what Tolkien was thinking.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Except movie Kili doesn't even apply to what little description we have of dwarves in Tolkien's text. Or Kili himself for that matter, who is blonde and has a beard.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
He is short, stout, and has a beard. The fact that he's brunette is the only actual problem.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please. Do a movie about Santa Claus and give him that beard and see how people react.

And explain how Aidan Turner its any description of "stout".

explain how Aidan Turner its any description of "stout"

Because Elijah Wood is totally 3 feet tall, amirite?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
No, but he still looked like a hobbit. Also Elijah Wood is the type of guy who kind of looks like he could pass for a hobbit -- Aidan Turner doesn't pass for a dwarf.

They didn't make Turner look stout or dwarfish--all they did to him was give him long hair and pointy ears. Beyond that he looks like a normal person. All the other dwarves at least had *some* measure of makeup or prosthetics.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
He is bold, brave, firm, strong, and sturdy.

OH! You didn't know that those were synonyms for "stout?" Well, golly.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Do I really have to spell this out?

If "stout" is used as a physical descriptor for someone or something, they're not referring to their actual personal traits.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Demonstrate that it's specifically used as a physical descriptor.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's listed under "physical appearance", not "characterization"? Seriously.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Really? In the book, there's randomly a list in the middle of the action entitled "physical appearance," under which "stout" is included? Which page is this on?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get why everyone's saying he doesn't have a beard. I mean, he's not going full on Odin or Father Christmas or whatever, but he's definitely got a beard, not just stubble. I think it'd be interesting if it got longer over the course of the movies, though, or even saw some teasing from the other dwarves about how scraggly his facial hair is, with maybe some reassurance from the older dwarves about how it seemed to take forever for their beards to fill out. I don't know why they made him a brunette, though. Hair color is such an easy thing to change and the actor's probably wearing tons of extensions and stuff anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's a beard. It's just not a DWARF BEARD. YEEEEAH.

But you know that's the only reason they made it attractive; there wasn't enough romance in the book, hence making up some random she-elf (the elf befriending a drawf storyline was already done with Gimli and Legolas). Same with the rest of the series: Aragorn and Arwen are a vague side plot that's hardly mentioned at all and the movies made it nearly as important as the quest of the ring itself. And if we're just going off continuity, does no one remember what the drawves looked like in the other films? Bear in mind, this is the same director. But he seems to have forgotten his own aesthetic after a decade.

Do you have to whine in every single thread about how much you hate the movie? If you want to pretend it doesn't exist why not start by not engaging discussions about it?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Because their life is small and petty and if they didn't start discussions about how much they hate 'The Hobbit,' then they'd currently have absolutely nothing to do with themselves.
