The Next Doctor?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I was just watching Graham Norton, who had Matt Smith and Jennifer Saunders among his guests. At one point they asked Jennifer why she had never been on the show, and it hit me like a ton of bricks: I would love for Jennifer Saunders to be on Doctor Who - as the doctor!

So, FS, who is the unlikeliest person you would love to see as the Doctor?

WC Fields.

Well, you did say "the unlikeliest."

Do you know if there has ever been discussion about having a female Doctor?

Re: The Next Doctor?

I'm not in Doctor Who fandom at all (although I love Doctor Who, obvs), but I'm fairly sure there has been speculation about it before. Probably no actual plans, though.

I'm sure I've read quotes of Moffat referring to it (although, if we do get a female doctor, he is the last person I would want running the show). I also just googled it and found this thoroughly depressing quote from Matt Smith:

"I think there are many actresses that could play it because there are so many wonderful actresses. I mean, it would change the role because she would be a woman so when you put her in a room full of men, it’s a different scenario than if you put a man in a room full of men, because she’s a different sex. Would it change the fundamentals of the character? No. But it’s an interesting idea, if the Doctor’s a woman, does she have a Doctor baby? Is there a mini-Doctor? I don’t know, who knows?"

Maybe we're not ready for a female Doctor, tbh. What the fuck is that even.

Matt Smith doesn't have a very strong grasp on the Whoniverse, tbh. He's also not very bright, is somewhat sexist, and painfully unworldly - basically the worst traits for the person portraying the Doctor.

It is entirely possible for the Doctor to regenerate as a woman. There is also a good chance that Matt Smith's replacement will be a woman because the BBC is under enormous pressure after having a male Doctor and a male companion with only one female companion and a recurring female who has appeared in less than 25% of the episodes. Because of how the BBC operates, their balance and equality regulations influence casting and production staffing. With all the corporate shuffling going on, it's probable that Moffatt will be replaced by a woman within the next two years (and most likely within the next 12 months). It's less likely that the next Doctor will be a woman, but it is infinitely more possible than Matt Smith, Moffatt, and most fans think.

I'm pretty sure most of the Doctors haven't. They're not exactly fans, just actors. Tennant being a pretty notable exception.

He's also not very bright, is somewhat sexist, and painfully unworldly - basically the worst traits for the person portraying the Doctor.

And I'm sure the actor who plays the villain from Django Unchained is not a white supremacist. It is acting, after all. And I can think of a number of important traits that NONE of the Doctor's actors have had: namely, immortality, a long lifespan, infinite knowledge, boundless compassion, etc.

That said, I would like to see the quotes you're talking about where he's sexist.

Dear God, this.

if the Doctor’s a woman, does she have a Doctor baby?

...
Shut up, Matt.

At one point I would have loved a female Doctor. But nothing about the show as it is now makes me want one. We have Moffat running things, the Doctor is, I guess, married to River (didn't she kind of... force him? If so, that's not a real marriage, imo), and just... no. Unless there are some major changes both on screen and off, I'd prefer the Doctor be played by men for the time being.

Oh! About the River thing: I'm not adverse to a female Doctor being married to a woman, I just... don't like his relationship with River. At all. And the Doctor being female while in that relationship just... God, no.

Ew, yeah. "It would be different because she's a woman!" Different for the men, maybe, if they're sexist idiots. But please don't write them that way. Besides, it's the DOCTOR. Nothing phases the Doctor. And if s/he were a woman guess what? They'd still be the Doctor. Don't make it more about their gender than their character.

And that last line, REALLY? That's both sexist and really old-fashioned. "She's a woman ergo she must have a baby! That's what women are for!"

Re: The Next Doctor?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Some women would argue that it would be different because she's a woman. I would absolutely not agree with them, but that's not a strictly male viewpoint.

If you're talking fandom I'm assuming you're being sarcastic (the answer is EVERY DAY).

If you're talking showrunners, I think we've heard something once or twice.

Either one. I just recently started watching the show, have only seen six episodes, and know next to nothing about the fandom.

Thanks :)

I would love a female Doctor, but I would rather see her after Moffat leaves.

Moffat has a tendency to reduce female characters to sad little caricatures. In Moffatland, a strong woman is one who solely relies on her "sex appeal" to make her strong. That is not to say that sexual empowerment is bad, but when it is the only form of empowerment Moffat utilizes, its pretty bad.

Amy, in "expressing" her "girl power" is a kiss-o-gram (or the kiddie version of a prostitute). That is how she is introduced as a grown up, as a woman who had Doctor (DADDY) issues and in an effort to deal, gets a job where she pleases men.

River was introduced with the potential to be a strong character. However, again, Moffat fucks it up, by reducing her to a pile of mental illness and obsession over the Doctor.

The few women the Moffat-era has introduced that had strength in ways that didn't relate to a vagina or mental illness, didn't last long.

If he were to make a female Doctor, it would be tragic.

Plus Moffat would never allow a female Doctor, because that would be breaking tradition and he would consider it an insult to the history and the show. YES, he is that much of a self absorbed ass.

Phew, sorry got tl;dr there...I have feelings.

Yeah, this seems to be the general consensus...huh...I didn't know much about Moffat other than that he frequently pisses off the fandom but from what I'm hearing I totally agree...
