Unless you're paying people to write fanfic for you, no you aren't entitled to a damned thing.

Au contraire. I'm entitled to my opinion. And when it is in a forum in which I am allowed to respond, I am entitled to my response.

If you didn't want me to have such an entitlement, you shouldn't have made it possible.

And I'm entitled to disregard your opinion as completely unimportant. I don't owe you a new story just because you commented.

Of course! But you have to deal with the comment being there in the first place.

If I don't want to be rained on, I probably shouldn't walk out when rain is in the forecast. I have every right to complain about the rain but that won't stop it.

And there are many, many ways of dealing with the comment. Ignoring it is one of them.

You seem to imply that your advice must be heeded because you're entitled to good writing as a reader. All you're entitled to is an opinion. That opinion isn't going to mean shit to anyone 99% of the time.

But I am entitled to state it. Heeding it is your privilege.

I know you are trolling, but some people actually believe this. The whole "You are responsible for my actions" attitude is stupidly and horrifically commonplace.

I don't think it's so much "you are responsible for my actions" so much as "you put your story up on a review site and then complained that you got reviews." No one makes anyone else put their story up anywhere.

People don't deserve to be flamed just because they put up a story. The flamer has to take responsibility for his own actions. "Because you let me" is a fucking terrible excuse.

Flames aren't concrit. That's an entirely different matter. No one's saying that just commenting a line of profanities is somehow a good thing.

Commissioning fic isn't any weirder than commissioning art, yo.

I know fic exchanges and gift fic are pretty common, but money passing hands is not. Last I checked this was the biggest no-no in fandom, and liable to get you wanked upon good and hard if you are caught doing it. Writers are not allowed to profit on fanfic.

Most of the commissioned fic I've seen is for charity drives, so the money goes to said charity instead of to the author.

I've actually had this offered to me. Turned it down, but it was offered.

If you're paying me to write fan fiction, but only about 5 cents and are an idiot when it comes to writing, are you still entitled to an opinion when I express that you could perhaps pay someone else that would actually be willing to tear apart canon and make the story instant love and all about how all the characters in the manga adore your character to pieces?

No they shouldn't. No one should feel entitled to anything in fandom. Fandom doesn't owe you shit.

Well by that logic fandom shouldn't exist. Why bother reading fic? You don't owe it to authors to read it. Why bother posting fic? You don't owe it to readers to write it in the first place.

No one is saying you shouldn't post bad fic or anything like that, or that comms/sites should start setting up rules about what constitutes good fic and limiting posts as a result.

We're just saying people to be a little mature when they receive anything less than glowing praise. If you don't want to try improve your writing? Fine, ignore it - but don't start going so apeshit over someone trying to help you out that everyone else is too intimidated to do the same for writers who want concrit. It's gotten to the point where even if an author who loves concrit practically begs for it at the end of everything they write, readers probably won't leave any because of fandom's staunch anti-concrit culture.

I don't read fic because I owe the writers to read it. Do you? Because if you do, that's insane.

I read fic because I enjoy reading fic.

I write fic because I enjoy writing fic, not because I feel like I owe my readers to write fic. This is how fandom works.

Some writers want critique and they can plainly state in the authors notes that they want critique. Easy! But if someone says nothing, just assuming that it's wanted is kind of ridiculously when it becomes blazingly clear that many writers don't. Some will only listen to critique from people whose opinions they trust. Some people treat their writing as "you get what you get and you don't throw a fit." Some have just given up on getting anything remotely useful in the way of critique. Some people are too emotionally attached to their creations to be able to take it.

Listen, I'm not saying you can't ever give concrit. I'm just saying, save it for the people who actually want it, and is it really that hard to ask?

if what you are saying is that you want people to give you concrit, you can ask on your LJ or in a community for someone to beta your fic.
