I actually didn't really get all of the whining about HOT DWARVES until I saw this image and wow... uh, way to make the "hot" ones stand out, Peter Jackson (I agree with someone's comment I saw elsewhere that they look more like humans than dwarves)

Well, I mean, to be fair, the story's been out for, what, 75 years now? So it's been around for discussion a while, whereas the movie-specific elements are all novel.

I do agree, however, that I'm finding the shipping way more off-putting than I expected.

I do agree some of the jokes are getting old (even if Thorin IS majestic, there's only so many times you can hear it before it stops becoming funny), and I'd love to talk about the story and characters more, but...well, the fandom IS majorly on tumblr, which isn't exactly a practical forum for discussion. D:

Can't say I agree about the shipping, though.

I enjoy good story/plot discussions!

I don't really ship anyone there (though, some of those dwarves are pretty hot).

I would like to discuss the story too. Though I kind of like the hot dwarf thing. I think it's funny when you consider that none of them are over five feet tall. All these fangirls are imagining them to be six feet plus only for the dwarves to come at their chest.

God, this book. I loved it. Liked the movie, too.

Because the book was important to me as a kid, I don't want anything to do with the fandom. My "feels" are staying offline.

I'm not in the LOTR fandom so I don't know for sure, but I kind of get the impression a lot of LOTR fans actually aren't so crazy about The Hobbit - it's essentially LOTR lite or something. But I will say I've noticed this with all my fandoms lately - people just don't get excited the way they used to, which makes me a little sad. It's mostly actor-is-hot squee these days.

If you want to have a conversation about the story, then start a conversation about the story. There will be someone out there who will see it and want to respond.

Because nobody gives a shit about the story. They literally do not care. The story is a delivery mechanism for Thorin-sempai and hot dwarves and high production values, and the fandom could not give less of a shit about the actual plot of the film.

(I'm not in the fandom, so I don't have a horse in this race.)

I understand your feelings, OP. But at the same time, people should be allowed to enjoy a fandom any way they want. Personally, I want to both discuss the plot and characters and enjoy some shipping. I'm all about everything to do with this fandom right now. And there is nothing wrong with either approach to it, IMHO.

to be fair, despite the fact that it's a nearly three-hour movie, it's kind of........light on plot

the book's not, and the things they're alluding to in the film aren't, but like. ultimately not much to discuss plotwise yet if you've just seen the movie. "Some dwarves want to reclaim their ancestral homeland and all the bling contained therein; they begin their quest with a rapidfire sequence of action scenes, accompanied by a dude who is ostensibly the protagonist but who thus far is mostly charmingly unremarkable"

I fell asleep so many times during this movie that I wasn't aware of any story.

I feel in general the fandom is trying too hard to make the ~magic happen. A lot of the memes feel forced. Same with a lot of the ships, especially Bilbo/Thorin. Imo, there was no chemistry. /grump

About the shipping though- I'm more weirded out by how NOT weirded out I am by it.
I not surprised about all the Fili/Kili ship, because they don't look like brothers AT ALL. I don't mean just the hair difference.

Aw goddammit, I have some friends over for one night and miss the Hobbit-secrets explosion?! :(

anyway. I DO! I loved every second of this stupid movie. I love the stuff they added. I love how they made the dwarves more distinct. I love the emotional core they gave the entire central mission and the way they punched up the relationship between Bilbo and Thorin. I LOVED THE RIDDLES WITH GOLLUM SCENE. (Though tuly, I loved it all)

the shipping weirded me out at first but I've found I am strangely amenable to it.

So join us in the book side of the fandom already.
