Well, on what tag do you want them to publish it? It's a relevant tag, and they want their voice to be heard, too.

Besides, if Gillen can get through the porn and creepiness on this tag, he can also withstand the criticism.

This brings up a tumblr etiquette question I would really love to have answered. I don't follow tags, just a couple of users, but I frequently see the complaint 'If you're going to post a long rant about why you hate X, fine, but don't put it in the X tag.'

But...why not? It's what they're talking about. If I were going to post a long rant about hating bananas, I'd tag it bananas. Don't tags exist to sort by topic?

I wish there were a convention that people posting hate would use two tags: 'X' (because topic) and 'Anti-X' (so people just following the main tag for the squee could just block the 'Anti' tag).

He's a big boy, I'm sure he can handle it.

JiM was perfect, what is wrong with Tumblr

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people (not everyone, but there were some) loved everything but the ending, because "he broke his toys so no one will ever play with them again".
Personally I thought it was heartbreaking and wonderful.

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2013-01-06 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, he did. And it was beautiful and heartbreaking. And oh so right considering the meta message of JiM. Kid!Loki was not going to stay forever, so I'd rather have Gillen end his story and continue writing this new Loki (and he writes Loki really well) than let anyone else fuck the character up.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I really would have liked to see what other writers would do with Kid!Loki. I find it interesting to see different takes on characters; some I like, some I don't. Yes, somebody could have messed him up but somebody else, given the chance, could have done something amazing.

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2013-01-07 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't trust Marvel to keep good things. They would have turned Kid!Loki evil sooner or later and I'd rather had this lovely bubble of a story that rage forever. I'm still raging about the Phoenix retcon.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the drama in the Young Avengers tag is worse - at least the people in the JiM tag read the book.

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2013-01-06 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading the tag, missing the context... new looks? That's what the fretting is about?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Fans are freaking out because the new artist updated their designs. Mostly, they just got spoiled by the fact that the bulk of the YA stuff thus far has had the same artist, so they don't know how to deal with change. They've been pretty dicky about it--seriously, there was so much wank about Billy's hair omg wut--but it seems to be slowly dying down. Just in time for the new title to start and new wank to start. Lol.

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2013-01-06 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, having the same artist for a long time is rare in comics.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, YA fans are pretty spoiled in that regard. There were other artists in some of the event tie-ins and one-offs, but most of the art was by Cheung. There are quite a few YA fans who don't follow many other titles, either, so they haven't really gotten used to the frequent switching of artists that some titles have.

i think he got worse from storm fans on his formspring when he was writing uxm, maybe.

he's one of the most thoughtful, classier creators around so i always wish people would be more courteous when criticizing his work, but comic book fans have a reputation of vitriol and when you go into the industry you kinda have to be prepared.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"like writing smack in bathroom stalls but with your name attached so the target knows who said it"

So... criticism? I think the professional writer can handle it. I know there is this tendency to see tumblr as a fan space, but I don't think it is. You can't curate a global tag. It's never going to work.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, some people take it a bit too far, but overall he's handled it incredibly well and seems to be able to take it all in stride. The one time I've really seen him getting a bit miffed is when he answered that question on formspring and told people that joking about stalking/hurting/killing creators is not okay. Which, honestly, was totally warranted and I applauded it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So they're not supposed to participate in fandom because the author monitors the fandom and therefore no one is allowed to post about disliking something? Yeah, right. I hope the author isn't as sensitive as you are and it's his problem if he is.

Oof, yeah, that's a little awkward.

I mean, no I think the ending was kind of a bit clingy (it makes me think of Geoff Johns with the Rogues, honestly), but it's rare that I'd want to put my fannish rantings somewhere a comic creator would almost definitely see them. That's just...awkward and a bit rude?

[personal profile] sochitelya 2013-01-07 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
If a creator is going to participate in social media, they need to take the bad with the good. Not everyone is going to buttpat them, and it's nonsense to expect people not to post their opinions just because the creator might see it. If he does, so what? He's putting his work out there, he needs to expect criticism, even if that crit is 'u suk'. Otherwise, you might as well just keep your efforts to yourself and maybe a couple of your friends.
lilacsigil: Beast, Marvel Comics (beast)

[personal profile] lilacsigil 2013-01-07 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. And he's a comics writer so I expect that he's got a pretty thick skin for this kind of argument already. He can talk on his tumblr without following the tag, and he seems entirely capable of using the platform competently to promote his work without getting sucked into drama.

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-01-07 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
eh, it's his decision to make. I mean yes, it's uncomfortable, but if it bothers him it'd make a lot more sense for him to stop reading the tag than for people to stop criticizing and making the same commentaries they would make about anything else.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
As long as their being respectful they're perfectly within their right and Gillen realizes this, too (or else he's in the wrong business).

I know I'm in the minority but, while I loved the Fear Itself tie-in, the rest of the series just didn't click with me and the end just annoyed me. I also didn't like how Gillen seemed to forget Sif existed.

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2013-01-07 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Sif appeared in TMT, she wasn't really relevant to Loki's story.
