Notes:

Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

I don't get it.

Is this a thing?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course it is. The husky with the bandit face is the bad one.
pts: (Avatar: China Mieville)

[personal profile] pts 2013-01-12 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
But, like... the bad one in what?

I guess I don't see a lot of multi-dog fandoms such that I can come to conclusions about stereotypical representations of specific breeds.

I'm not saying you're wrong, anon, I'm more asking—where are all the dogs in fandom?

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-01-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Right?

I'm trying to think of examples, but I'm coming up blank.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Eight Below, Snow Dogs, anything with a sled team, you know who the wicked one is.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-01-12 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So... a few stupid kid's movies, then.

Not like bandit-faced huskies are demonized in all media like pit bulls.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know where you're getting that this was about breed demonization, or marking demonization, it's about the predictability of the thing.

Oh, and all your fandoms suck elephant balls though a garden hose.

DA
Eight Below is not stupid.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

Oh, with a sled team! Okay, that's a genre where you would have multiple huskies and one fur pattern could be stereotyped as the naughty one.

This secret makes so much more sense now!

I definitely thought of Snow Dogs.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
i can only think of snow dogs and balto

this, uh, isn't that popular and fertile a genre, you know

Massugu ni Ikou?

But their Husky just needed energy to run around, wasn't evil or anything.

That's...like, the only dog show I can think of with a husky.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, aside from Balto, I've never seen this portrayal of huskies. If anything I see it all the time with Dobermans and Pitbulls.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I HAVE seen this, especially Pitbulls. Dobermans at least have enough youtube videos of them taking care of babies that people aren't as vocal about it. I already made a comment about not seeing this about huskies, but people really hate Pitbulls and it makes me a little sad because every Pitbull I've ever known has been sweet, gentle, and full of love.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Unrelated, but when you work with animals inside and outside of a clinic like I do, you come to understand why these dogs have the reputation that they do. I have met just as many adorable and well trained pit bulls as I have terrifying and uncontrollable. It has nothing to do with "oh it was abused as a puppy that's why it's so mean" it has to do with people not understanding the needs of the breed and how to mold it into a well mannered adult. Every generation has a new breed that is "hated on." It's been seen in rottweilers and german shepherd before in the past and it seems that a lot of the popularity surrounding the hate is related to the popularity of ownership. Right now it's the cool thing to own a pit bull, meaning there are thousands of high maintenance dogs with owners who haven't the slightest idea as to what to do with them.

This makes me really sad too.

Kind of besides the point because the secret was about stereotyping of markings within huskies, not the entire breed, but nonetheless...I totally agree. I love pits.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This is what I came here to ask, (though my articulation was going to be closer to "LOL WAT") I mean, come on. I have never seen huskies portrayed in a negative light, because the kind of fiction that includes huskies in the first place tends to be survival/dogsledding stuff, which favors them for being intelligent, trainable, and extremely strong. So what the hell?

It really feels like in terms of 'bandit face' husky colorings, this particular specification must be so few and far between that it's not a true stereotype. If there is, it can't be much different from the whole 'raccoons are mischievous!' idea that is based in the way they look and behave. It certainly isn't stopping people from seeing how beautiful these dogs are and buying them, so I doubt the huskies themselves care...

I see this secret as a waste of anger. Direct some of that toward human racism...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What is this, We Can't Read Day? It's not about anger, it's about how damn predictable it is to pick out the troublemaker in a sled dog movie before he even does anything. Right up there I indicate that I'd appreciate being surprised about it for once.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
ahaha, the best thing about these kind of secrets is that the OPs get so butthurt over the fact that their totally obscure and ridiculous rant isn't immediately embraced by all of the internet.

yeah, you keep being mad about all the MILLIONS of sled dog movies out there. i'll be waiting for the next one to see if you'll be pissed off when it debuts (though i might be waiting for awhile...)

Look, the trouble is you didn't explain in the secret that you were talking about sled dog movies. I have never actually watched a sled dog movie, and I'm not sure I've seen any movies with more than one husky, so the secret just left me nonplussed.

What you want to do here is say "Ooooops, I didn't realize other people were operating in a different frame of reference" not get defensive and accuse people of poor reading comprehension.

Except 90% of all huskies in the media have the same goddamn look. Do you have a special radar? Because I find it really hard to pick out the trouble maker when nearly all of the dogs have the same look to them. Considering the mask markings are the most well recognized looks for huskies, I am not surprised in the slightest that it is the most used type. Lord only knows how you can pick it out.

I didn't think it could get any stupider than bagged milk wank or do you store your spices on your oven wank, but then here comes husky face pattern wank.

Insanity Puppy Meme?

I can't think of any other examples though.

That is cute. And scary. But cute. XD Going to hide from evil husky pup now.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen one movie/book/whatever where the bandit face husky is bad. Hardly any media that I consumes has husky's in it at all, and when thy do they're usually good and the face markings aren't mentioned at all.
