I agree except sometimes Hawkeye seems really codependent on Mustang to an unhealthy degree.
dragonimp: (Oh noes!)

I was about to say this, too, but was afraid of starting another wank about it. But yes, this.

But Olivia and Izumi are awesome.

I loved her so much in the original series and had huge issues with her in Brotherhood (and the manga).

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Funny, I was the opposite. (I had huge issues with the portrayal of all the female characters in the 2003 anime past the point where it diverged from the manga.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh great. Liking the women is a secret but hating on Hawkeye is something people do in their real names. Typical.

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-01-18 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I never said I hated Hawkeye. I simply pointed out something I thought was obvious. She's still kickass.

Mentioning traits you don't like = "hating on" now?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Rephrase -- 'making negative comments about.'

It just depresses me when people think that positive statements have to be secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, WHAT?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, WHAT? what?

I think it's depressing that someone thinks "I like the women on this show" is something they can't say publicly. And then people in the comments immediately start saying negative things about characters. It's just a weird dynamic.

Secrets aren't always submitted because they feel like they "can't say it publicly". Some are submitted just to keep the community going, or because they're interesting, or somewhat controversial, or the person doesn't have an account, or whatever.
dragonimp: (. . .)

[personal profile] dragonimp 2013-01-18 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like you don't think people should be making negative comments at ALL, because dude, this is mild. I think it's depressing when you have to bite your tongue when discussing a character instead of being able to discuss the pros and cons both.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
No, I said I don't understand why people put positive comments as secrets. If that's your bag, then fine.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
you're not the only one wondering that, anon. I was curious why this was a secret at all.

Yeah, okay. You were saying a bit more than that. Since positive secrets were explained elsewhere, I'll leave that part be.

uh

first of all I think you are reading way too much into this here

second of all, it sounded to me like [personal profile] queerwolf was taking issue with the way Hawkeye was written, not Hawkeye herself...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I just didn't understand the point being made, wasn't trying to stir shit.
logicbutton: Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist with her hair down (Default)

[personal profile] logicbutton 2013-01-18 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was kind of a problem for me in the last twenty chapters or so of the manga. I ADORE Hawkeye (as we speak, my friends who read this comm are probably checking this thread for my username so they can have a chuckle about my predictability), and it broke my heart to see her so blatantly invested in him, even if it did up working in their favor.

Thank god for Major General Armstrong. I kind of want her to be my life coach.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Why in the world is it wrong for her to be invested in him?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I don't get it either.

And it seemed to me that he was pretty invested in her too?
astridv: (Default)

[personal profile] astridv 2013-01-18 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. They were codependent, emphasis on the co. "Hawkeye seems really codependent on Mustang" is missing half the story.

They weren't role models for Most Healthy Relationship, of course. They were messed up, that's one reason I loved that ship.
likeadeuce: i would like to say i'm riza at work, but I'm more like Roy. 'plotting extracurriculars! cookies for breakfast!' (mustang work day)

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2013-01-18 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought about that later, too. If you mean the whole problem is her fault, don't use the word "codependent."

And seriously, they are delightfully fucked up, that's quite intentional, and it's not any kind of counterpoint to there being good female characters on the show.

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2013-01-18 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Why did you find it heartbreaking? I loved it as a tweak on the 'loyal retainer' dynamic.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think they had a co-dependent relationship at all.

I don't think most people really know what co-dependency is, what with how everyone seems to throw the word around to describe any relationship in which two people love each other to a huge degree (platonically or not).

I think they're both dependent on each other.

I honestly think if something happened to Riza, Roy would just fall apart entirely.

And to be honest, this is a situation where I don't mind. I like their codependency. They went through that war together. They suffered and messed up in a way most people can't comprehend. They're both a little unhinged and just trying to move on and live and make amends. But they need each other to keep sane and make sure neither of them fall out of line because they both know what terrible things they are capable of.
