So I accidentally started wank in this comm the other day. Genuine opinion, didn't anticipate or mean to stir up a mess, but apparently managed to hit a hot button issue.

I used a term I shouldn't have (didn't realize it was offensive) in a secret, and got the SJ brigade so far up my ass I was walking funny for a week. This was about 3-4 years ago.

Can't remember any details, but it was in some conversation about dieting (big surprise). I said something in general about a medical article I read and someone that I hadn't been talking to took it as a personal attack. The whole thing escalated in next two comments into a free-for-all that had nothing to do with what I had said. If I had actually meant for that to happen, I would have been proud.

I tend to express myself badly in writing so it happens. I think something about drugs was the last time it happened.

I stirred a lot of those.

A couple ot time I attacked popular canon works;

one time I wrote about my psychological problems, and people told me I was a narcissist ass (which I, admittedly, am);

one time I made a secret about my super obscure fandom that had two canon sources, and this secret was basically about one of them but contained a picture from the other one; people usually don't know the first one at all, so they decided that I didn't know my own canon. This is, for some queer reason, the thread that still makes me ashamed.

I actually feel established enough in my fandoms now and with enough fandom friends that I feel comfortable talking about this so:

(and by that I mean last June)

I was very new to writing in fandom and being in fandom in general and I went under another pseud of which I will not reveal, both because it does not exist anymore and because if you really really feel like it you can trawl through the archives of the Sherlock Rant Meme and find my x-ed out username, it's not that hard, I would assume.

Anyway, I was super bored with my summer job and I didn't have anything going on in my hometown or anyone to hang out with and so I started casually writing for the Sherlock Kink Meme un-anon (like a fucking idiot). I would write about one short, unpolished fill every night, and then post them to the meme, my journal, and my AO3 account (all of which have been purged). I also used to talk about my own fic on the rant meme like many other people did, except for unlike other people I was very clearly traceable, even as an anon.

So anyway one time I was talking about my fill in a thread or something and someone asked about it and I thought I had provided a link but I had actually not but I thought I had and presented it like I had and so the person was like "Haha funny. Not" and I was an idiot and was like "You're rude for just saying that mean thing anon w/o constructive criticism" or something and then the internet exploded for like two days about all of the reasons why I suck, some of which included about how I was apparently a 'prompt hijacker' and also someone was disappointed about a mental illness fic I wrote or something based on my own experience with mental illness but it wasn't accurate enough or something I guess.

Anyway I cut all of my ties to all of my accounts and started anew, because it was really bad :P I guess sometimes you have to learn the rules of the internet the hard way. I have a decent amount of friends under this username now, so it all worked out in the end :)

I expressed concern about doctors who actively pressure women to abort after pre-natal screening tests turn up something potentially abnormal, and somehow this was interpreted as being anti-choice.

Most everything I say turns into wank because I have opinions that don't mesh with most other people's opinions, and no one seems to believe I'm not trolling/actually think differently. It's tiresome.

Years ago, in the Fullmetal Alchemist fandom a big fanwank started. In this case, one user was really being bashed around. So on her private journal, I said that I was sorry that a certain person was treating her harshly and didn't think she deserved it. Of course said person comes to her journal and starts attacking me and attacking the journal poster. I think even her cronies got into it. Ugg. So I made the situation like 10x worse.

After that, I said was sorry for starting wank on her personal journal, then left the Fullmetal Alchemist fandom.

That's the biggest accidental wank I ever started.

I once made a post on a niche rant community trying to articulate something I'd noticed. Somebody else grabbed onto something I worded poorly (that actually had little to nothing to do with the whole point of the post) and got all up in my ass about it. After apologizing and trying to correct myself - which seemed to only piss them off more - I left the post and never went back. A comment on a mod post a couple days later, however, mentioned the wanksplosion and that it wasn't actually my fault, so that made me feel a bit better.

Generally I tend to get into wank I shouldn't, rather than start it all my own :|a

I made a secret about Princess Leia becoming a Disney princess. I wasn't on F!S when it was posted, so I was quite surprised when I checked the comments the next day.

I avoid controversy whenever I can which means I almost never post on potentially controversial subjects.

Honest question for those who started accidental wank: Did you have any idea it would erupt? Did part of you send out warning signals - "no no don't do it"?

I mean, there are "safe" topics, "unsafe" topics, and those that fall in between. Did you know you were potentially crossing that line into "unsafe"?

I'm wording this badly and I'm sorry. I'm really not trolling - I'm trying to understand the thought-processes that go into wank-storms. Does that make any sense?

I don't think I often if ever do tbh, but when I do. Seeing a trail of mysterious anon threads branching out from my total attempt at being clever gives me the willies. especially if it's because i'm ribbing someone, but someone else takes it as a jumping board to just be mean, because oh man i enabled douchery and am now both a first and secondhand douche

I've accidentally done this on my fandom's kink meme a time or two. The latest, over whether or not mind control kinks are noncon.

Tumblr - someone who ships my OTP was being stupid by bashing other ships. I said that I'm not always fond of everyone that ships our OTP either, basically trying to say that she wasnt doing us any favors. And it got out of hand lol.

I was the one who made the "I'm glad I'm a soprano since it makes me able to sing my favorite fandom/musical songs" secret about a year and a half ago that ended up with 200+ comments and a healthy smattering of "FUCK YOU" and "GO DIE IN A FIRE" sentiments.

I literally had no idea the virtual war between Soprano and Alto was that heated. Of course, I regretted nothing.

Not on F!S, but it was technically related. During the fall of 2012, I posted an F!S secret basically saying that there aren't enough Touhou/Homestuck crossovers on the Internet, with a little bonus secret tacked at the end about my ships. This secret got reblogged on Tumblr and the next thing I knew, I was faced with a wall of Tumblr-ites saying that I'm a major pevert and dickhead and that you should be stupid for not looking at Tumblr first (I don't have a Tumblr). I actually ranted on it on the GC the next day.

Also, about a month back there was a little discussion topic around GC involving caning... and I offered my own opinion. Needless to say, I didn't want to look at my inbox for a few days.

I borderline started wank? It wasn't very big though. I posted a prompt on a kink meme, someone asked about historical accuracy, and people started ripping into the person about not policing prompts or something, I don't know. It was stupid.

I feel bad about it because I thought the person was obviously just asking a well-intentioned question, but since I HATE confrontation I didn't comment on their behalf or anything. :/ I'm sorry, person.

Sorta, it was a little one. Posted on a NaNo secret a couple months back saying I didn't like the whole thing. Had no idea I'd get a swarm of anons.

I innocently asked why someone said a character was canonical male since the source material left their gender ambiguous.

Turned out to be a hot-button in that fandom. Whoops?
