Shiemi's actual main flaw is self-centeredness. She is also very dismissive towards her mother initially. Not to mention, she is morally flawed and weak-willed enough to have been susceptible to demon possession, something the series makes clear that does not happen to people who are more centered/secure in themselves/outwardly focused and caring towards others.

I get that a lot of people dislike (even resent) this character archetype. I'm not gonna try argue you out of it. But Sheimi actually IS a complex and well written female character, and I like her a lot. *shrugs*

I really like Shiemi too and also think she's more complex than what the OP of secret seems to think :D

You guys seem to have completely missed the fact that OP is making a social commentary, here. That specific character is just an example of what s/he hates about those types of characters.

Thanks for the clarification, OP.

I don't know the series, but these responses seem to indicate that this character isn't a good example of the archetype OP has a problem with.

No, I get that, and I respect the point-- somewhat. But I just happen to feel that Shiemi happens to be a poor example of this particular type of character, because she isn't really all that selfless and she does act out in ways that are obviously bratty and selfish (honestly, I can't think of any other female character in anime who has been shown, more a few times even, out-and-out yelling at her mom, and not for any particularly good reasons-- while still being billed as one of the "good guy" characters).

And the thing about her big boobs.. yeah, she has them, but most of the guys don't even really notice or pay them any particular mind. There are only really two guys who do. And it's never shown to be an aspect of her characterization so much as the guy's reactions to her boobs are indictments of theirs.

She has a really interesting story arc too, one that I don't want to get into details about since you probably don't care about it and I've probably already rambled on too much already. :) But mainly I just think that the secret maker just obviously hasn't delved too much into this character enough to make these kinds of judgments, since canon itself pretty well contradicts most of the points she (or he) is making.

I think it's also possible sometimes for people to be too keen on expecting "strong female characters" to be kickass and tomboyish and not sweet in order to deserve the title of "strong." But I judge characters based on their complexity and the realism of their presentation/interactions with others, and Shiemi despite her shyness and cuteness is a very well realized character with a lot of depth. I like her a lot because I admire the complexity with which she was written. She's definitely not the MOST COMPLEX FEMALE CHARACTER I'VE EVER SEEN or anything, but in her genre of manga she's a standout character and is... just basically a lot more than how the secret OP is portraying her here.

Couldn't agree more. A "strong" character has nothing to do with the amount of ass they can kick.

I don't dislike her per se, I dislike the way she is presented, if that makes sense.

Well, it's more that the mother would feel responsible even if it wasn't really her fault, you know?

Sheimi's self-centeredness becomes more apparent in the manga in some of her later actions, but even with the grieving over her grandmother, she WAS being selfish about it, since all she was doing was catering to her own grief and not appreciating/caring that her mother was grieving too.
