Well, Japan has a huge problem with pedophiles, so....that pretty much answers that.

It's fetish fodder, best to ignore.

Like you think they have more of them?

This does not seem likely.

It's not the sort of thing you can teach someone to be.

lol about the school thing. it's anime, why are you even bothering to question it? she probably gets away with not going to school for the same reason that the yu-gi-oh characters are able to constantly ditch class for weeks at a time to go play card games. that's just how cartoons are

Shiemi never went to school when she was young because she was too sickly. Plus, she said that she wasn't good with crowds, which probably factored into the no school thing.

Also, I wouldn't say clumsiness is her only flaw, her naivete is a pretty big flaw, since it is what allowed her to be possessed by a demon.

yeah, it sucks

the best you can do is vote with your wallet: don't support creepy anime, support the rare ones that aren't creepy, and when asked for recommendations, recommend the non-creepy ones

it likely won't do much, since they probably care more about domestic sales than international sales, but hey it's something

I wanted to like this anime (it just had every anime-Christianity cliché ever, how can you not like that?, but the treatment of the female characters just squicked me out too much. I was especially disappointed because apparently the mangaka is a woman? I wouldn't have picked up the series otherwise.

I agree with the first part of your secret but I really don't think she is presented as THE feminine ideal in the series, at least not in the manga. Her role is also not really reduced to "support the men around her" since she does have own motivations/goals so to say…it just so happens that most of the people around her are boys.

That being said, it's sad that you think no women/girls in real life are like her since I personally know some really sweet and supportive girls.

Shiemi's actual main flaw is self-centeredness. She is also very dismissive towards her mother initially. Not to mention, she is morally flawed and weak-willed enough to have been susceptible to demon possession, something the series makes clear that does not happen to people who are more centered/secure in themselves/outwardly focused and caring towards others.

I get that a lot of people dislike (even resent) this character archetype. I'm not gonna try argue you out of it. But Sheimi actually IS a complex and well written female character, and I like her a lot. *shrugs*

So...watch something else? Not all anime series incorporate that character archetype. Believe me, I'm not fond of the type, either, but it's a common archetype in anime, so you're going to run into it, especially with more mainstream/longer-running shows.

I'm gonna do you a favor and recommend Dennou Coil, so you can see that it's not every anime ever.

OMG THANK YOU.

I really dislike her solely because she's presented as the paragon of pure femininity. She's cute, childlike (easily manipulable), innocent (until shes in my bed!), feminine, and mentally strong (barriers and healing! Yay feminine-like powers!).

Meanwhile the girl with the brash personality is usually presented as annoying, full of herself, mean, unfeminine, physically and mentally weak.

I wanted to like her. Her voice was super cute and reminded me of Tsukimi from Kuragehime and her familiar was even cuter...buut I dropped that show for a while because of those tired sexist shenanigans. So sick of characters like her being shoved down my throat.

Not going to school is a thing here, "shy" students are allowed to stay home and be hikikomori.

These characters are the main reason I quit my anime phase.

There's so much wrong with them I don't even know where to begin. Ugh.

Meh, super sweet healing chick is an Ancient ass trope, if not a cliche. Just roll your eyes and move on.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know the show or the character at all, but the fact that you think that no "real" women are like that makes you far more sexist than the show could possibly be.

Hint: there is no such thing as a singular definition of a "real woman." Every woman is different, and I guarantee you that if you pick any fictional female character, you could find a real woman out there somewhere in the world who resembles that character in personality.

I agree, to be honest. And characters like this - especially female characters - are most of the reason why I don't watch anime. Because it's really, really annoying being a girl, and wanting a cool female character, and instead getting a bunch of ~supa kawaii~, silly, naive, innocent, shyness-and-blushing-and-OMG S-SEMPAI D-DON'T LOOK AT ME THERE! female leads, and having to roll my fucking eyes so hard at the stereotype that I damage my optical nerves. Girls in anime are held up as such a paragon of sexualized virginity that it has completely ruined anime and manga for me.

Re: school, well. It's a fantasy series with demons and magic. It's not exactly RL Japan.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that it's a kind of trope that annoys me, but I also don't really see Shiemi as the sexualised blushing violet stereotype. Then again, characters like Shura are the ones who tend to bug me more, so.

"i hate that this is always presented as THE feminine ideal in anime, no woman in real life is remotely like this!!"

Looks like women need to step up their game.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-21 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
r u new 2 anime?

"i swear there is a girl in every anime like this" & "this is always presented as THE feminine ideal in anime" = both false

but hey, keep on keepin' on if you want, instead of seeking out things that ...don't do the tropes you dislike??
