This happens to me ALL THE TIME. It's not so much that I like characters fandom hates, as much as I like at least something about almost all fictional characters, period, if I have any investment in the work they come from.

I liked Neelix from Star Trek Voyager. Yeah, he was irritating, but I liked him being irritating. Also Wesley from TNG (I did hate him during season 1, but I first saw him when I was young and was excited beyond belief about finally seeing a smart kid on TV who wasn't mocked as a pathetic nerd, and that's stayed with me).

I also liked Mandy from the West Wing. Well, not so much liked her as thought she was really interesting and was irritated that she just vanished without explanation.

I absolutely frickin' love Peggy Hill from King of the Hill, especially when she became ridiculously over-confident and clueless. Her characterization was annoying, yeah, but funny and rare for a mother in a comedy show. Also, I'm not sure I've ever laughed harder in my life than I did at "Lupe's Revenge".

Also, Short Round from Indiana Jones. IDEC, he frickin' adorable, especially trying to drive a car.

I also liked Peri from Doctor Who. I understand why people hate her, but anyone who can stand her ground and yell the line "So what??? I'm Perpugilliam Brown and I can shout just as loud as you can!" in response to the Master hamming at her on a cliff edge, and despite the fact that she's clearly crapping herself in terror, is an impossible character to hate.

Also, not sure if this counts because everyone else started loving her too later on, but I loved Donna Noble right off from The Runaway Bride special.

Peri sounds awesome, which Doctor is she the companion of and what episode is that quote from?

She started with Five, but was mostly with Six.

That's a line from "Planet of Fire", her debut episode.

She's the Fifth and Sixth Doctor's companion. Unfortunately she's usually nowhere near as awesome as that scene and kind of really got shafted in the character development department, since the episode in question was "Planet of Fire", her first serial.

That's too bad, but it won't stop me from checking out that serial!

Fair warning: for some reason the writers of DW at the time decided that nearly every serial had to have a villain who creeped on her blatantly, which I think is one reason fandom portrays her as screamy and freaked out, because SPACE PERVERTS. EVERY SERIAL.

But she is totally awesome and if nothing else you gotta see Planet of Fire and Caves of Androzani. <3_<3

Yeah, that got really annoying... I didn't mind Sherez Jek; they were going for a whole "Phantom of the Opera" thing with him (including letting her go to save her life), plus he was Human (or at least Humanoid), but space slugs? Why would they be attracted to a Human? Plus, yeah, one or two times is okay, but eventually it was like, "Really? This shit again?"

Space Perverts would be a really awesome title for a porno... >_>

I also like Turlough, who I think is somewhat of a red-headed step-son (haha!) among fans.

I was actually going to mention Mandy as well. The first time around, she didn't make much of an impression on me either way, and then I glanced into the fandom and realized everyone hated her, and figured they must have a reason? But I just recently rewatched the show from beginning to end and you know what, I don't mind her at all. At times, I even enjoy her: I thought the stuff with the panda was hilarious, and when she tried to get more involved and counseled the president on the FBI raid (in "The State Dinner", I believe?), and had to deal with the consequences, I thought that was pretty interesting character stuff. I also hate that she was just suddenly gone from the narrative, and especially how people are like "ho ho ho it doesn't matter, it was Mandy." Like, S1 ended with everyone getting shot at, I cannot believe that as a character she wouldn't have at least given a crap.

Wait...people hate Short Round? :( Don't ask me how I missed that.

And agreed about Donna.

And he isn't universally hated, but I've seen a good deal of Kaidan Alenko hate. HE WAS MY FIRST (Mass Effect) LOVE, AND YOU'LL NEVER PART US.

I always see hatred for Kaidan as well :( Don't get me wrong, I love Garrus and co., but Kaidan has a special place in my heart. I ship him and my femShep so hard.

When she chucks him over her shoulder in ME1 I always giggle. Also the cafe scene <3 All their scenes together, really.

Yea, me too. Garrus is one of my favorite ME characters but most of my Shepard's feel more like besties with him than lovers, and although I love Thane and Liara as love interests too (and a lot, at that), Kaidan will always be special to me. He's definitely my type, too. (Physically and personality wise.)

I can't really like him, because I find it pretty unforgivable his reaction at Horizon. And (I'm sorry!) Kaidan fans get SO incensed if you don't buy their excuses. I don't think his reaction was evil, but I do think that he really didn't apologize as well as he should have. It was sort of poor writing, but poor writing is canon too, and Kaidan's character suffered for it.

But I always feel something warm when I talk to him in ME1. There's something very natural about that romance.

People didn't like Neelix? Aww. See, this is why I think it's a good idea that I don't really get invested in the fandom side of a lot of shows I watch.

People HATE Neelix.

And Naomi Wildman.

And Kes.

And Harry Kim.

B'ellana, Tom, and the Doctor get some, too, but nowhere near as universally as that lot.

People DON'T like Donna? She was my favorite companion by far. She was the only one who didn't fall in love with the Doctor, which I loved.

She's pretty loud, so a lot of people find that obnoxious, and many more say they only liked her post-Runaway Bride, where she's really loud. I loved her there, too. I liked her boorishness after three seasons of having to watch a companion make goo-goo eyes at the Doctor.

Well, for some reason (I guess because she was so abrasive) people didn't like her in "The Runaway Bride", which was over a year before she became an official companion. There was a lot of whining when she was announced as an official companion too, only for everyone to shut up once they saw that hey, she was actually kind of awesome.

Also, Amy never fell in love with the Doctor either? She just briefly had a crush on him (and it was more on the idea of him than him himself).

It's my impression that a lot of it was not so much for Donna as preexisting hate of the actress, whose name I'm blanking on, but who had her own show just a little before her time on DW.

A lot of the people bitching about her before her run were converted by the end.

Who doesn't like Short Round? Terrible people, that's who. I still think we should have seen an adult Short Round in Crystal Skull, instead of Shia LeBoeuf.

"No time for love, Dr Jones." Also, an elephant is his best friend. He's clearly the best character ever.
