I know this feeling. I'm not quite bitter that TFP isn't TFA, per se, but I'm bored of TFP and really miss TFA, it really engrossed me in a way that TFP has utterly failed to do so far. I haven't even watched the last couple episodes of season 2.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
Same here :(

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you OP. I decided to give the show a chance, but I've been watching it rather halfheartedly for the last season. The Autobots just seem dull compared to the Animated versions, and I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of the CG, which is the reason that their Earth is so devoid of humans.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Thank god for that. I always hated watching a Transformer show/movie and then having humans clogging up the screen time.

I personally don't see a single reason why this franchise is popular at all. There's literally nothing good in it but the concept.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, concept is enough to sustain people.

I hate to say it, but I've experienced it myself. I've stuck with certain things because I'm hooked on the concept, despite finding the execution poor. Granted, there's a level of crap to which I will not descend, but I'm sure the nature of that level varies according to person.

Hey, at least you've watched and enjoyed a Transformers show. Just think of all of those people who've either not watched or not enjoyed any iteration of it, yet hang out in the fandom anyway. By that criteria, you're ahead!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Name some names, brave anon. Who do you know of in Transformers fandom who's never watched any iteration of Transformers?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Could be a jab at the comic book fans. But they're generally pretty dedicated in their own right and I don't think can be thought of as lesser fans due to their choice of medium.

I prefer the Optimus from TFP; but the Starscream for TFA.

The rest of them I'm easy on. Apart from the annoying little producer self-insert character in TFP. I hate him.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I still would sell an ovary for TFA season 4, but that aside, just, objectively, TFPrime is a terrible show.

What makes it extra unwatchable for me (as opposed to just being mediocre) is that it has some real flashes of potential, like the end of season one SHOULD have led to an awesome start for fascinating character stuff for season two and that got bungled. Then the list of potentially interesting characters who just get shelved (Airachnid, June).

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.
An overall shallow plot, sure, but some truly good ideas did pop up and got summarily ruined/hurriedly resolved within a couple of episodes at most. Instead of developing ideas or characters, they use them and toss them like kleenex.

So much this.

I haven't even watched it yet. And every now and again, I think I should. But...nope.

And at first it was just being bitter that TFP took TFA away from us (and before all the nifty plot threads had a chance to resolve!). But, y'know, it's been years and I can move on. But then I look at, say, the character design, and it just makes me miss the clean, identifiable character design of TFA and...sad all over again.

Plus...Blitzwing and Bumblebee and Prowl and Ratchet and Sari and Swindle and...and...and...*sob*

(TFA is the only Transformers I've seen every episode of, and a good deal of that is that the characters pass the silhouette test--I could never tell G1 transformers apart. Beast Wars was good for that too, but oof, that is some clunky CG to go back and watch.)

Prowl is having a hard time of it recently. The comic book has taken his character and twisted it beyond all recognition. Prime, uh, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I was never really a fan of TFA (I don't hate it, but it ranks near the bottom of the list of Transformers for me), but I do really love TFP.

Yes, I know, I'm a terrible person and should feel ashamed (but I don't).

I think the CGI is lovely and the character designs are great. (The "empty world" thing doesn't bother me because I'm not here for the human characters anyway.) I think that, while admittedly plotlines tend to fall apart, the characterizations are where TFP really shines. Not everything is explicitly stated and spelled out for us, but all of the characters just seem to have this POTENTIAL, even if it isn't actually realized. The things a lot of fans tend to bitch about (the deaths of certain characters, for example) make sense to me, especially when you consider the Decepticons and how they operate.

I also think it's worth mentioning that the writers have said they didn't expect to get through all of the plot we've had in only two seasons. It sounds like Hasbro put a lot of pressure on them to wrap things up and move on for the sake of selling toys.

THIS.

I feel the same way. I really like the use of humor and the different dynamics in TFA, but I can't quite grasp why I haven't gotten attached to it the same way I have gotten attached to TFP.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The characters had potential. In the first season. Then they proceeded to go absolutely fucking nowhere, have little to no development, and were generally flat as paper. You can't have good characters without character moments.

Are you me? I feel the same. Transformers Prime is not the worst thing I've ever seen, but it is so average and has none of the awesome character development and chemistry Animated did so beautifully.

I am still waiting and hoping IDW makes a Season 4 comic. I WILL WAIT FOREVER.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Read the More Than Meets The Eye ongoing while you wait. It is a truly spectacular comic with plenty of character development and chemistry, and needs to be read by EVERYONE. :p

I liked TFA for all the G1 shout outs. I want so many more transformers to show up in Prime. But I love that TFPrime actually brutally murders people, and the Optimus Primes just don't compare. And I like all the little stuff they throw into characterizations especially for the Deceptacon interpersonal politics. And pretty much any time Soundwave does anything because he's amazing.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree on one point: TFA Optimus Prime was excellent. He showed real development, wasn't a static figure, was relatable and ultimately turned into the badass we all love. I don't see how he 'doesn't compare' with TFP's blank slate of a Prime. His only characterization was being Orion for 3 episodes.

I got into the fandom really late because I was feeling this, but I'm glad I finally got past it. Just kinda gotta accept that they're two very different series.
