You seriously think in order to mention a character's gay they have to be running around waving rainbow flag's in the story?

All she needed to do was have a character who knew Dumbledore make a quick little comment about him once liking a guy.

how would they even know though? dumbledore was regarded as a mysterious and private figure. even if some people he was close to knew he was gay, what cause would they have had to bring it up around Harry?

You are aware that a huge chunk of the last book was about Dumbledore's past, right? Including stuff he kept secret from Harry?

Yeah, exactly. All the other private stuff he told to Harry in the "King's Cross" chapter, but for some reason mentioning that he was in love with Grindlewald would have been too private?

I thought it was pretty obvious? I was already under the impression before she was asked about it and I was like "DIDN'T EVERYONE KNOW!?" There was a discussion thread about that on our forum long before that. Everyone was like "Soooo, did Grindelwald reciprocate his romantic feelings, y/n?"

but as the anon said, how would anyone even know? dumbledore fell in love with grindelwald at a period in which he spent all his time with the guy discussing ethics and theories and magic locked in a room somewhere. it wasn't long before grindelwald peaced out, so who is to say that anyone else ever knew that dumbledore was in love with him? I always assumed he took his secret to the grave.

How about if Dumbledore told Harry himself? How about if instead of just saying "his ideas inflamed me" he'd added "and I was young and in love"? Seems pretty simple to me.

Simple enough. "Hm, yes, he was good friends with that Grindlewald fellow, and also liked to bum him, as I recall. Well, to each their own."

Harry overhears things. He's a bit of an eavesdropper when it comes to that invisibility cloak.

But Dumbledore's One True Love ended when he was really young, and it was one-sided as far as we know, and it's implied that even Grindelwald didn't even catch on. He was also pretty heartbroken about everything that happened, evidently. So he wasn't going to talk about it, and the other characters weren't even born when he had this unrequited-love for Grindelwald, si Harry couldn't have just overheard, since I doubt anyone but he really knew much about it. And it was fairly heavily hinted at in the chapter Dumbledore chatted with Harry in heaven.

In any case, she told the producers/writers for the 6th film, because they had Dumbledore mention a woman in his life, and she wrote them to tell them he was gay.
