But it doesn't make her a LBGTQ hero or a moral saint.

This. Mentioning after the fact that a character is gay isn't a bad move. She gets points for that. But she also confirmed a total of one character as gay out of a large cast, and it was an older, fatherly figure who died. (Is it just me, or does the UK have a problem with Bury Your Gays? :/ ) Nobody is saying she's a horrible person for confirming that, but...yeah, she's also not any paragon of LGBTQ+ rights. I would've respected her more if she'd shown a couple of the students in a same-sex relationship, just in passing (eg, "so-and-so and her girlfriend/his boyfriend").

I also would have respected her if she hadn't put that bit about Sirius' room being full of pictures of scantily women. It didn't add anything to either the story or his character except to go, "See, see, he totally likes women! He's not gay!!" (I wonder if the idea that he could be bi-/pansexual ever occurred to her) So, yeah, pulling that shit, then confirming that one whole character was gay only after she's made her money the last book has been out several months... d-:

na

I never really saw it as screaming that he;s heterosexual, it just seemed like a very teenager thing to do (a muggle thing at that, and the motorcycles and muggle ladies on his wall had the added bonus of ticking off his parents)

how does having a few bikini clad women on his wall mean he can't be bisexual? and he ran away from home at the young age of 16, it's not like he couldn't have explored his bisexuality after that. or maybe he took all of his pictures of naked guys with him and left the women behind, who the hell knows

Surely scantily clad Muggle GUYS would have pissed them off even more? Besides, was this even meant as something for his folks to see,and not just stuff for himself?

how does having a few bikini clad women on his wall mean he can't be bisexual?

Oops, maybe I phrased that badly. What I was saying (and I still feel this way) was that one of the reasons for the pictures was JKR's way of asserting that Sirius was straight. But, as you say, just having pictures of women on the wall doesn't mean he's, straight since it's possible to be attracted to more than one gender. What I was meaning to say was that I'm not sure the idea of bisexuality occurred to JKR when she wrote that bit.

it was mentioned that he put permanent sticking charms on the back of all his pictures, so I figured that implied his parents might come into his room and try to tear them down. I think the pictures were definitely for himself too, but they were also an act of rebellion

..He was trying to piss off his parents by doing typical teenage boy things. A typical teenage boy is not going to fake his sexuality just to bother his parents. How is it so terribly abnormal that a heterosexual teenage boy has pictures of women he finds attractive on his wall? I just don't understand how this is such a huge issue.

That being said, I do not feel at all comfortable with trying to guess whether or not the concept of bisexuality occurred to J. K. Rowling with regard to her own characters.

Yes, that's my point: After the speculation about Remus and Sirius, the pictures feel like JKR felt the need to make sure people understood Sirius was straight.

I really, really, REALLY doubt that she did it as a response to people shipping Remus and Sirius. She didn't make the Weasley twins straight after people started shipping them together.

I never thought about it one way or another, but I wouldn't be surprised. I still find the way Malfoy is described in the epilogue to be the most hilarious middle-finger ever. (Fine! FINE! I've made him more jerky and awful and evil with every book, and you girls still find him leather-pants sexy. Well, here he is as a pudgy balding middle-aged dude. NOW what do you think?)

"Surely scantily clad Muggle GUYS would have pissed them off even more?"

Maybe it wouldn't have, because surely they wouldn't have wanted him marrying a half-blood/muggle-born woman and having lots of half-blood children with the Black name. So they actually may have preferred him to be gay, because then at least there wouldn't be any more little blood-traitors called Black. Probably not what JKR intended, but it's a thought.

Um, you're looking for ways to dislike her on this one. She didn't do that to anyone, only the Woflstar shippers took that as an attack, but it's ridiculous. She was like "erm, nope, not in love with Lupin sorry" and then a few books later she had Harry see Sirius's room. The posters were mentioned because they were MUGGLE women, non-moving, irreparably stuck to the walls of his muggle-hating household. It wasn't some sly message to slash shippers.

I tend to agree with this. I don't think she was making some under the table comment about homosexuality or bisexuality when she had a heterosexual male character put up pictures of scantily clad women on his bedroom wall. It had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with her trying to have Harry understanding Sirius' character at that age.

You know, no one said this about the pinups in Bobby Singer's panic room.

Or maybe I missed it. If I missed it, DO TELL ME, F!S.

I think the fans felt they were soooo important that she was writing messages to them. But she generally kept herself away from the fandom. I'm not even sure she was aware Sirius had a following who so desperately wished him to be gay for their shipping purposes.

I'm STILL not aware that Sirius has a following.. is that what this is about? People thinks she's responding to fans shipping Sirius with other men, so she has to ~prove~ that he's straight? wat?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
You're just mad because it made you Remus/Sirus OTP non-canon
