Annoying names

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
If you are going to have kids anytime soon, please don't name them:

Aidan, Braden, Caden, Hayden, Jaden, Kaden, Zayden (I know Aidan is a legit Irish name, but all the rhyming crap has kind of ruined it)
Payton, Payten
Braelyn, Kailyn, Kailyn, Raelynn
Braylee, Caylee, Hayleigh, Jaylee, Kaylee, Kayleigh
Cadence, Kadence, Kaydense

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqPmPA4Vn_U

Or:
Madison, Madyson, Addison, Jackson, Harrison, Tyler, Taylor, Pierce, Lincoln, Grant, McKinley, McKenzie, McKayla, Kennedy, Kennadie, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Raegan

Or Mc/MacAnything on a girl, because it's something that comes from Irish and Scottish surnames and I think it means "son of..." And it makes it sound like you bought your kids at McDonalds.

And no, it's not clever to actually use "Danger" as you child's middle name.

And naming your son Blade, Gunner, Killer, or Manly Penis McWeaponson will not make him into a super-manly warrior guy. He'll probably go up to be an accountant or a cashier at Burger King.

Nor does spelling a name in a weird way make it "unique." Your little Braeghdynn will not stand out among the Bradens, Braedyns, Braydens, Braylyns, Aidens, and Caydens.

Oh, and Nevaeh should really mean Hell, since it's Heaven in reverse. If you can't just call her Heaven or something that means that, name her Lleh.

Well I like the name Jackson so what are you going to do about it.

But I do agree that there is a surplus of -en names about. I feel bad for educators during this time.

Nothing, I guess. It's not the worst- just don't spell it Jacxson or anything. THAT is stupid.

Rude. I'll name my kids whatever I like.

Thank you for suggesting Manly Penis McWeaponson, that's one I've never heard before and I think it has a lovely ring to it.

Jackson

Heehee... I have two fandoms now with a "Jackson" (as a first name) in them, and I like both of them. Er, both Jacksons, that is. (-:

I'm going to go out, get pregnant, and name my kid Kaylea Maydees'n MacKaydense/Blade DANGER Hardcheese out of spite, anon! And you can't stop me!

- wait, Nevaeh? People seriously name their kids Nevaeh? Oh yes, spelling things backwards to make a new name is oh so mystical and unique.

Still.... the mental image of a tiny little Nixon Reagan is too precious to go unrealized.

WHY DO PEOPLE GET LIKE THIS ABOUT BABY NAMES it kind of pisses me off guys. Just name your baby whatever obscure and clever yet traditional name YOU come up with that appropriately communicates how classy and creative you are and calm the fuck down about the 4 million babies called Jaden because THEY'RE GONNA BE FINE.

Fuck this people can name kids whatever they want. What you personally don't like has no bearing on my child rearing.

My brother recently became a father and his kids middle name is Danger. I think it's cute.

Sorry you don't approve of other people's lives, but it's really none of your business what other people do.

I could care less what you name your kid, but the whole name your eight sons all "Fred" makes me shake my head (especially when their middle names are all the same or derivatives of the same name as well). Like doesn't that get confusing at home?

I like the name Aiden and always have. :)

The only names I have problems with are "alternative" (as in wrong) spellings of common names.

i don't mind these names, but most of them are so popular right now that i just roll my eyes every time some snot-nosed kid zips by or breaks shit and i hear an exasperated "BRADEN!" from behind me.

Ah ha ha. I have to agree that trying to come up with a really 'unique' way of spelling a common name can sometimes backfire, because if people can't pronounce it or mangle it every time 'cause you added six extra ees' or something...might rethink that.

I was surprised when my daughter was telling me names she liked and Joanne was one of her favorites. She picked some pretty old-fashioned and 'plain' names - nothing like me when i was a kid!

I have honestly never met a Blade or a Gunner, but I have met a ton of Hunters, Ryders, Walkers, Masons, etc. MANRY OCCUPATIONS. I think it's just an effect of - and this goes for the Mc/Mac names and the "-son" names - the modern trend of using last names as a first name.

That said I'll take those over the BILLIONTH "Emma" or "Jaden" on the playground.

STOP NAMING YOUR DAUGHTER EMMA OR YOUR SON JADEN. SERIOUSLY. IN MY DAY IT WAS "SARAH" AND "MATT" AND THERE WERE FIVE SARAHS AND FOUR MATTS IN A SINGLE CLASS. STOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP. THESE KIDS ALL HATED IT AND WOUND UP WITH NICKNAMES INSTEAD. SOME OF WHICH WERE UNFLATTERING. THINK ABOUT YOUR CHOICES.

Re: Annoying names

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, the only thing I see problematic about really "creative" names from the kid's perspective is the lack of pre-printed name crap. idk if this was a thing for anybody else, but when I was a kid, I got a little upset whenever I looked at racks of these things and the spelling of my name wasn't listed (despite my spelling being the original spelling, but obviously when some idiot pop star with a ridiculous spelling gets famous, everybody spells their name that way! uhg). When I was still on the fence about kids, I knew I wanted to give them names that were "normal" and had a good chance of being found on those racks.

Other than that, some names are really easy to twist into cruel nicknames, and you have a statistically harder time getting hired with a hard-to-pronounce name than you do with a common or easy-to-pronounce one.

I don't think you quite understand the purpose of surnames and mc/mac. It may have originally meant son of, but that is no longer relevant. Just like my surname meaning sheepfarmer while I'm actually a cow farmer doesn't matter.

...what's wrong with Grant, Maddison or Tyler? or Carter?
