see, and all I'm hearing is, there's a reason no one wanted your photo and it doesn't have anything to do with how long you spent on your makeup.

there are tons of reasons, good and bad, that people don't take photos at cons. some of them are shallow douchebags who only want pics of hot girls and t&a. some of them are braindead fangirls who only want pics of their favorite characters no matter how shitty the costume is. some of them are secret elitists who only take pics of really gorgeous and well-made costumes. including really well-done horror makeup. so if you're neither hot, cosplaying the current hot trendy yaoi-bait, or making an amazingly stunning costume, you're probably gonna get shafted. it may be shitty, but it's how this thing happens.

can't speak for the zombie walk though. man I didn't even know people cared about photos at those things, never been to one.

+1 If I go to a con wearing something that shows off the fact that I'm female-bodied and within society's acceptable weight range, I'll get people asking for pictures no matter how crappy my costume is. If I wear something loose that bulks me out or something that hides my figure completely, or I crossplay well enough to pass, no bite, unless I happen to have hit on someone else's favorite obscure character. (this doesn't apply if I go to cons that are female-majority, usually, but anywhere else...)

It really has very little to do with the costume itself.

I've found one of the ways to get a costume photo taken of you is to find someone with a similar-quality costume as yours that matches what fandom you're in. (Say you're costuming as Riddler and you go find a Joker or Bane to take pictures with) It doesn't ensure you get a photo taken of you, but it helps more than it hurts. You also might make a friend!

My boyfriend costumes as Stuttgart Loki. He gets more photos taken of him, period, because he's in a hot woobie costume. It doesn't bother me, really, because I know fandom goes cuckoo for a good Loki. The fact that he's the same height as Tom Hiddleston and could pass for his stand-in doesn't hurt.

Also, OP: Are you height-challenged? I'm on the short side, and many times people don't see my costume because I'm not super tall. I often get overlooked when I'm with my tall friends, because... they're tall.

I completely agree to your first point! I'm a reasonably attractive lady but last fall I cross-played a character to the point that I didn't look remotely 'hot' anymore (wig, sunglasses, bulky vest-- unrecognizable as a woman from a distance). I was stoked about what I put together but I wasn't getting many picture requests despite having a stupidly accurate costume... but I found someone who did a genderbent version of the same character and we ended up taking a shitload of pictures together for novelty's sake. And I made a friend! We said hi to each other for the rest of the weekend, even though we didn't have complementary costumes for any other day.

Guilty... Though many of my favorite characters are either from obscure fandoms or aren't very popular with the fanbase, so it's mostly out of excitement that somebody else not only knows who the character is, but liked them enough to dress up as them, even if the costume is shitty.

nayrt but also guilty.

...Actually, I kinda feel cosplay was all about that 10 years ago and now it's all "photoshoots" and e-fame. I miss the days when it was all about fandom.
