Okay, it's complex.

Basically Hussie said at one point that the kids are aracial. Which means a lot of people were portraying them as nonwhite, which is awesome--it's complicated by the fact that half of them are canon blond and appear to be born that way but whatever, it's a cartoon.

He then releases this frame (originally it said 'caucasian;' peachy was added after a lot of people complained and a greater number were really jerky to the complainers, for some reason depictions of the kids as nonwhite really offends some people even though Hussie's calendars feature nonwhite fanart). It's pretty much trolling those who get up in arms about the race issue. He went so far as to say the kids are "canonically caucasian" in trickster mode.

Only the entire trickster thing is kind of creepy and meant to be seen as such--so this isn't exactly an endorsement of whiteness or confirmation that the kids are white when not in freaky mode.

Basically a lot of people in the SJW community are angry because Hussie trolled them, as he often does. Others are angry because they are pretty consistently angry. Others seem uncertain whether to be angry at Hussie or a lot of gross people in the fandom but Hussie made it so he gets the brunt of it.

Thanks for the explanation. I actually got off my lazy butt and read Hussie's explanation sometime after making this secret, which at least explained why it was theoretically funny and why some people found it offensive. I still don't find it especially funny, but at least I'm not so confused.

It wasn't really all that funny in the first place.

What chardmonster says about the aracial thing is true, but they neglected to mention that it's pretty much a copout since there are many subtle indicators in canon that Hussie thinks of them as white even though he didn't necessarily mean for them to be. It's an understandable thing, coming from a white person, but it's a little cagey that he didn't own up and admit it.

The problem came from Hussie making fun of it in a way that seemed kind of insulting to people with nonwhite headcanons for the kids, and those assholes who've never liked nonwhite kid depictions just ran with it and were incredibly nasty to the people with those headcanons. A number of popular POC kids artists quit the fandom over it. These assholes are the ones who made Hussie change it, as he said himself, despite the fact that they froth at the mouth that it's all the fault of "SJ sallies."

Also Hussie can make them fucking blue and it would be fine. He created them. Get over yourself and your entailment. He owes you fucking nothing.

Your headcanon is not more important than whatever the creator says is canon. Hussie is not your bitch.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Hussie changing the word. However, "I FEEL SO CAUCASIAN" doesn't really seem like even saying white is a good thing. You could even be saying the whiteness is making it creepier, like a cheesy after school special. Everyone's white and happy and brightly colored and nobody has real problems that aren't solved within an hour.

The idea of Dave the somewhat embarrassing white rapper is funny. There, I said it. White rap is often embarrassing.

Also--the issue is that this is a serial story that's taken several years to get through. Any acknowledgment and endorsement of fancanon is going to look cagey in that timeframe. It isn't a book he's eventually publishing.

I mean, it makes sense to be angry that none of the kids are nonwhite but that seems like tokenism; like some kind of Captain Planet team model of diversity. Isn't it better to say that the kids don't have a canon race and then include a variety of races in the official publications? If he went and retroactively gave the kids races or did that with the new ones he'd likely be criticized for getting it wrong. "How dare you make the kid with glasses asian" or "how dare you make the african kids recolors of the normal body type" when this is how he draws everyone including greyskinned aliens.

Leaving the fandom over shitty fans isn't exactly Hussie's fault. Are shitty bronies the fault of season one MLP writers?

I fail to see how 'cagey' it is that Hussie might think of the kids as white in his own personal headcanon, or why he should be required to 'own up and admit it' as if it were something to confess. Considering he's keeping his own personal headcanon to himself and allowing everyone else to maintain their own without condemning nor confirming anything, what's the fucking problem?

I just hate that Hussie pussied out of trolling, because of a few assholes using it to push their dumb racist shit.

People are going to be assholes, regardless. So instead of getting all anus-pained over some 12-year-olds going "ALL THE KIDS ARE WHITE 4EVS. GO EAT SUM FRIED WATERMELONS AND STFU!!" on Tumblr, I feel the best response is just to disregard this shit because they're both clearly missing the point and incorrect (the kids don't have to be white, trickster mode just is) and it's not worth crying over.

And I don't feel like Hussie needs to change updates like this, just to play parent to his fanbase when these types of people are easily avoided.

even if he "pussied out" he did it for the emotional and physical safety of his fans since many of them were getting very serious threats/harassment in general over their discontent with the update or just their views on race in the comic in general. he was being responsible if you ask me; he straight up explained that he changed the joke because he didn't like that people were misusing it.

It took me a while to figure out the problem with this page, because I actually took the 'caucasion' comment to mean that Jane canonically was NOT caucasion. If she said she feels caucasion in trickster mode then I thought that that meant she felt different or that she had changed, i.e.. she had changed her ethnicity.
I understand why Hussie changed it, but I honestly didn't understand why people used the comment to say 'oh look, Jane is actually white'.

(But maybe I was grasping at straws to keep my Chinese Jane going)

Whenever people talk about the race issues in Homestuck, I tend to end up thinking of this comic, which I think explains how Hussie handled the issues surrounding the whole 'aracial' thing quite well. It's how I understand everything went down and why I continue to think that overall, Hussie made a serious attempt to do right by his fandom and their wishes.

As for the whole caucasian joke, well, I honestly thought it was poking fun at all the people who continuously insist that the kids are white! It felt like when DirkJake was confirmed as canon in the same log that Jake was considering breaking it off. Hussie plays with the double edged sword a lot in his writing, giving people what they technically want while making it doomed to failure or completely undesirable in the same breath.

Compounded with the fact that he turned around and took the joke out when people started using it as an excuse to harass other fans makes me think that at most, this was a teasing nod to the general drama, and definitely not a targeted attack at people with PoC headcanons.

That's just my interpretation, anyway. Please read the comic I linked though, I think it really handles the aracial stuff well.
