Well that's fandom for you.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
it's the Loki effect.

*Draco effect... or undoubtedly someone before him.

His backstory is kind of sympathetic, being he was trying to save himself from death...but that doesn't really excuse ostracizing and destroying a little girl's life, especially after destroying another game.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Not death as he would have been able to leave his game even if it was unplugged.

That's... kinda shallow of you? I mean, he's not a good guy but saying "he's not attraactive" People like people because of their stories too. It's not always the hot one that gets sympathy, though that does certainly happen.

I hate when people do this. He is vicious and underhanded and AWESOME that way.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Spoiler warning would have been nice as Turbo being the villain is a twist at the end.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Plenty of countries where WiR hasn't gotten to theaters yet.

Sorry!

oh my god I love you for mentioning Death Race 2000

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
The scene where he tried to murder a little girl really showcased his tortured past.

I have no idea what this canon is, but Death Race 2000 is an awesome movie and you are awesome for thinking that character was an homage.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I was referring to the 1976 video game. You know, this sick piece of morbidity (http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7541). But thank you for the compliment.

Yeah, on top of it all, the guy tried to murder a little girl and when that wasn't possible, did all he could to make the life of said little girl hell, and all for what? Attention. He's not even as sympathetic as fucking Frollo, and Frollo was a racist who murdered the protagonist's mother in cold blood on the steps of a goddamn church. The fandom scene is infuriating on many levels in its glorification of this monster.

Aside from the fact I'm not sure what the "he isn't even good-looking" bit is about (to be honest, it was a bit of fresh air seeing a bad guy who's definitely not hot stuff being so popular among fans), I tend to divide between fics set before and after the unplugging of Turbo Time and the subsequent Sugar Rush takeover.

By the time the movie happens, the guy is pretty fucked up. I was amused by how he didn't go and try to kill Vanellope right away and how he chose to trick Ralph into destroying her cart instead - but he still made her life a living hell, and as the cherry on top once he was cornered he did not hesitate trying to kill her. By the time he became a Cybug he was pretty out of control. So yeah, while I like the character, he gets no justification. I'll give a chance to any fic about him right after Turbo Time was unplugged - it cannot be fun knowing your game was unplugged and (likely) all characters in it died because you fucked up - because if handled well it can be interesting (and where the hell had he stayed hidden all the years between the Road Blasters incident and the arrival of Sugar Rush?), but I'll backbutton the moment it's some angstfest used as an excuse for what he did to Vanellope.

On the other hand, we know little to nothing of the guy back in his glory days. Just that he loved to win, loved attention and definitely had an ego the size of Canada, but nothing else. So I see nothing wrong with making him a somewhat decent guy back in the day, when he was the main character of the most pupolar game in the arcade and all was fine in his world. Not say he was the best guy ever (likely was not) but maybe he could be alright to hang out with. As long as the others didn't mind the giant ego too much.

Did we ever get a definite timeline? Since his debacle took both racing games out of the arcade, Sugar Rush might've been hauled in shortly to fill the niche. Yeah, they seemed old to be in the arcade still, but so was Fix it Felix Jr.

Personally, I find it funny when fandom portrays him as being cool, calm, collected, and sexy.

Dude, his catchphrase was Turbotastic, he sounds like Ed Wynn even out of disguise, and he spent most of the movie disguised as King Candy. A lot of people say King Candy's goofiness was an act, except he was being a total nutball even when he was all alone. He even sang a little song while he was in the game's code. Where's the slick Greaser-style attitude coming from and why is everybody using it?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
The slick greaser attitude probably comes from, well, Grease. See, Danny is a jerk at first, and he puts a great amount of faith in his car....

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Here comes the standard "anyone who sees a villain as sympathetic is an idiot, unlike me". Never change, fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
...the guy deliberately tried to murder a little girl in cold blood and when that wasn't possible, did all he could up to and including rewriting the fabric of his world's reality to make the life of said little girl hell, and all for what? Attention to feed his ego. He's a monster, pure and simple. More than Frollo, and given he killed two worlds prior, more than Gothel, given the girl isn't even given a stable comfortable status quo, and those two are probably about the worst of the villains. And they at least had some level of actually not-stupid not-petty reasoning in their motivations. (Religious conviction and self-preservation respectively.) What about Turbo is supposed to be sympathetic, at all?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I find him attractive, but I always find the weird looking ones attractive. I'm not gonna complain about the fandom as a whole, but some people do take the "sympathetic Turbo" thing too far. Particularly a lot of Vanellope haters. There are actually people who think he was the rightful king of Sugar Rush. Really guys? Really?!
