This pretty much sums up the Korra fandom. One man chains up children and he's a misunderstood woobie who is in a secret slash relationship with his underling, another person kisses someone back while in a new relationship and he's devil spawn that the writers were horrible for creating!

^ THIS

so with you on that. I am so sick of all the frothing Mako hate. Yeah , he did a shitty thing. But he's not a horrible human being and he's not a developing psychopath or domestic abuser either. ( I swear I've seen people saying he 's likely to develop into a domestic abuser. It's what fanfiction writers do. Canon guy makes them mad or gets in the way of their ship? They turn him into a wife beater. Stole the favorite pen of your favorite character? "He's clearly developing into a wife beater/rapist STOP BEING AN APOLOGIST FOR HIM")

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
it's called darkfic. you know, where they take something canon and twist it to be dark because it's fun or the behaviour of a character is legit creepy and writing is a way to deal with?

JFC you may not like the fic but stop acting like it's some kind of conspiracy. When people find a good characters behaviour problematic and never addressed...they're GOING TO TALK ABOUT IT.

Not everyone likes him and it's going to be written about. No-one's complaining about all the woobie fic about him, or him raping bolin but godforbid a darkfic be written seriously we all obviously think a poorly written character is a psycopath.

but mako raping bolin is a-ok

i'm not saying it's a consapiracy, I'm saying it's a bunch of people who don't know what moderation means. I understand writing a fic that's dark and makes sense within characterization. But I'm talking about people who argue that he is an evil stalker psycho in canon because for some people doing one bad thing is the same as doing another bad thing.

I'm okay with darkfic that acknowledges itself with logic. But I can tell the difference between "dark fic that portrays character's descent reasonably" and "I don't like him so he's a rapist".

I'm just saying that I've seen well thought out darkfic and I've seen people actually trying to claim that a character is a horrible rapist because they don't like him.

What he did was bad. It was stupid. He shouldn't have gotten away with it just so he could make goo-goo eyes at the main character becvause she's the main character and deserves him more

I'm not addressing the people who are reasonable but the people who are going off the extreme tracks, and twisting a character OOC or making him out to be the worst guy ever.

Because in my actual experience I've seen people on the internet do that (Just look at Ron Weasley. At least Mako actually DID something other than be clueless to get people mad at them)

I'm not talking to just the darkfic writers.

If you mean the people who wrote stories about Hermione running away because he beat her and stuff like that, I don't either. I figured plots like that must come from the same place as "Die For Our Ship."

OTOH, as someone who didn't interact with the fandom, I didn't like the way Ron chronically made fun of Hermione. I can understand how someone insecure, coming from a family with that many siblings, might have a pretty thick skin and expect the people around him to. But I can also relate to being 'the girl who gets the best grades,' and when boys responded to me by trying to shame me for knowing the answers, I wasn't inclined to give them the time of day. Not the first time they did it, and not the umpteenth if they were dense enough to persist. So the fact that Ron saying inane, belittling, and sometimes malicious things to Hermione and Hermione responding with acid remarks of her own was parsed as romantic was not one of the things I enjoyed about the HP books. I don't like that they ended up together, I don't think they're perfect for each other, and at the time it seemed to me like Ron would never understand what Hermione felt or where she was coming from. Or indeed ... ever understand that he was missing anything. For years, he managed to call her one of his two best friends, and still not be consciously aware that a) she was a girl, and b) girls are people. I don't judge him harshly as a character, and I can't explain why anyone would actually hate Ron, but it was a little irritating that the normal contingent of meta-y "let's love this story but also look at what's problematic about it" ignored all of this.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's up to the people involved in any relationship but those involving someone you have power over to determine whether they're alright with certain attitudes. If Hermione and Ron were comfortable with asshole banter with each other, power to 'em. It's not what I want from friends, but some people are perfectly happy and comfortable with it.

Honestly it's been the better part of a year and that anon will not let go of their Mako white-knighting. it's getting worrisome.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not thinking the authors are terrible people for creating Mako=/=Whiteknighting. You're the perfect example of the batshit fandom hate.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Are you talking about me Mr. Long spaces guy?

For reference I wrote ( http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/749681.html?thread=624526449#cmt624526449 ).

Also I have never posted about Korra fandom before, But hey gold star for assuming that everyone who disagrees with you is "that one guy". because you know, it's not like OTHER people in fandom can disagree with you ever.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm long spaces anon, I made that one comment then...wandered off...I do that. My bad.

you're chatting up other anons right now haha.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to think the creators are terrible. You just have to let it go......

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
LOL at all the butthurt Korra fans who hate Mako. How dare you question their hate for a fictional character that never actually cheated on anyone in reality. ;^;

Anon who ranted about the "Omg Mako is evil" upthread

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Technically he was dishonest and that wasn't cool. He was dishonest and misleading.

I still hold that he's not evil though and I don't know where the fuck they're getting "creepy" from, other than fandom's idea that a guy having any interactions with women is creepy by itself. He was dishonest. Not creepy.

DA

I'm not in fandom, but I have seen the entire show, and my issue is that there's really no repercussion for it. It's fair to say that Mako and Korra's actions do not reflect what the writer's feel, but I think that the lack of general consequence for those actions does. It came across, to me, as forgiving the heroes of moral disrepute because they're the heroes. If it were Mako cheating on Korra with Asami, you've got to know there'd be a much bigger blowback from pretty much every single character, and not just because Korra is more hotheaded.

And I think a lot of the hate comes from how viciously Asami was attacked when people were really shipping Korra/Mako.

SA

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ah I see.

That was problematic. Probably not the best writing partly because they were rushing to make a complete story (thinking season one was it. which would have made it worse because there would have never been resolution)

I'd like to think that when they heard how people didn't like it they will take that into note for next season.

The hate for Asami really would make it worse , though that is less of a writing thing and more of a fangirl thing. I do understand the reasons for the anger. I did find it annoying about how he was dishonest and Asami was blown off and told to deal with it because of the situation.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Poor Mako fan is a lonely mako fan. *pats

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ehh, apples and oranges. People expect different things out of characters positioned as heroes than those positioned as villains; it's normal for there to be something of a double standard regarding what behavior does or doesn't cross the line into unlikeability.

If people are actually morally equating one with the other, then yeah, that's a bit ridiculous- but if your problem is just that fandom sentiment turned against one character while still enjoying someone objectively worse, then you need to cool down and accept that this is just part of how engagement with fiction often works.
