Spirits Within was a good movie. It was an interesting take on the "domed apocalypse city" thing, the action was good and the characters were likeable. Tacking "Final Fantasy" on the title was a stupid idea, but the movie speaks for itself.

I don't know about the Tacking "Final Fantasy" on the title was a stupid idea part. A lot of the central themes (all the Gaia stuff) of the movie sound like a simplified rewrite of Bugenhagen's speech in FF7 about the Lifestream. That's what makes it FF, IMO.

I actually rather liked the first FF movie too. Don't really understand why other people hated it.

Same.

I have a friend who was upset that they killed off the love interest, but even she loved the movie as a whole.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you at all, nonnie! FFVII:AC was horrible, and I loved the original game. I think a lot of the hatred FF:SW gets is from people who were expecting a movie made from one of the games and couldn't get over their disappointment that it didn't have a whole lot to do with the franchise other than the name (ironic, considering the games themselves have jack to do with each other, barring sequels).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, you liked Spirits Within

not even in the fandom but that movie was TERRIBLE

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
TSW is one of those movies that requires you to have a fairly good grounding in most of the Final Fantasy series to understand.

AC barely requires you to have played FF7.

Decrying anything about FF7 gets you labelled as a heretic (I know, I've done it myself - it really isn't very good, people), but the fact that a lot more people have the background in FF7 required to get AC than do the interest in the whole series needed for TSW explains pretty much everything.

TLDR: yeah, TSW was far better. And the soundtrack is phenomenal.

I knew just about jack-ass shit about Final Fantasy when I first watched Spirits Within.
I only knew that it was an RPG of some kind.

But I still understood it, and I still enjoyed it.

Man, this statement has me so stoked. There are aspects of the game that I really dig, but overall, it didn't grab me. I think that a lot of people are attached to it more because it represented, in some respect, the future of gaming than that it was actually great.

Eh, IDC if you liked the first one better. I disliked them both, so I have no room to talk. (AC was VERY pretty, but I found it quite dull.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't even all that pretty, TBH. The fight scenes had the most hilariously shit physics ever.

I think most people only put Spirits down so hard because it wasn't "Cloud and Sephiroth's Happy Shiny Sword Buttsex Time: The Movie".

It had its silly moments, but it was still good, and the concept was neat.

Most people I know severely disliked Advent Children. At least, old(er)-school FF fans.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Plenty of old-school fans liked it too. But the purists pretend that being snobby about it gives them more street cred. Boo hoo.

Eh, I didn't really like either? Tho I'm not exactly a "fan" so I probably don't count. I just thought they chose a surprisingly boring setting to set a Final Fantasy movie in, very toned down. Someone said not enough anime hair and buckles, but I'd say not enough fantasy, it really was more sci-fi so I can def understand people being disappointed.

Felt definitely "meh" towards both of them.

I will come out and say: I agree with you.

I immensely enjoyed The Spirits Within. Advent Children, on the other hand, came across to me as an uneven smorgasbord of fanservice. Now, there's nothing wrong with fanservice, and there were nods that I sincerely dug (such as Tifa's ringtone, omg). But it doesn't make for "good" fiction.

I thought massive hate for both was the popular opinion in the fandom.

I enjoyed Spirits Within. I should watch it again sometime.

It had been a long time since the last time I played FFVII when I saw Advent Children, so my main reaction was mostly OMG SO PRETTY. I should watch it again sometime -- after I make my boyfriend finish playing FFVII.

I couldn't get over the uncanny valley-ness of SW. AC was at least better in that part, but they totally destroyed Cloud's character.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If you think AC destroyed Cloud's character you didn't understand him that well in the first place. The boy ALWAYS falls apart when something happens to him personally and not his friends or family.

Spirits Within was a better movie. It told a single, self-contained story that was completely possible to understand whether or not you knew anything about the Final Fantasy series (which I did not when I first watched it.) Whether or not you liked the story, you could at least follow it, because the narrative was complete and coherent.

Advent Children, by comparison, was a major continuity lockout. Pretty much every character other than Cloud was basically there for an extended cameo, meaning that a person who didn't have a grounding in the game is going to watch this movie and go "Wait, who's this black dude with a robotic arm? Why is it such a huge deal that this one silver-haired guy suddenly turned into a different silver-haired guy? Who's the brunette he keeps hallucinating?"

I actually liked Advent Children, but it was in no way a coherent narrative.

This is basically it in a nutshell. AC is really only accessible to FF7 fans. SW doesn't need you to know any of the games at all to get the gist of the movie. You don't need to have a degree in Lifestream Theory to get that the Gaia is the soul of the planet which is being attacked by the displaced soul of another planet which got destroyed.

Spirits Within was at least a self-contained story that had a bunch of really interesting ideas, even if it wasn't quite executed well. The idea that these aliens are actually GHOSTS? That is a fucking cool idea, and it was a landmark technical achievement at the time. I agree that really doesn't deserve the hate, so you're not alone, anon.

As for AC, I hate basically everything about the extended universe except for the original game, so I'm on board there too. That's a worthy fandom secret right there. :P
