Can someone explain to me what is wrong with this site? I don't go into the 'fandom' part or whatever. I just like to read lists of tropes.

This!

I don't think I can tell you the whole history, but one of the admins, Fast Eddie, is a tyrant. He once tried to get Lolita (the book) off of the site because he thought the book promoted pedophilia.

Fast Eddie's also the admin that got rid of Troper Tales after said feature was made fun of on YouTube.

And you've made a wise decision to not go to the fandom part. A lot of the fandom sites are edited by shippers, sexist fanboy jerks or people that think Doctor Who can be placed into every trope ever, and a lot of their crap stands by TV Tropes' "no notability" policy. Reading some of the fandom articles is enough to make you punch walls.

There are a lot of things that people point to, but one of the biggest ones I was involved in was that it became a haven for the kinds of people who regularly got banned from other sites (right-wing fanatics, left-wing fanatics, soulbonders, people who masturbate to drawings of little girls . . .) The admins didn't really know how to handle problematic behavior other than by banning, and at first they didn't ban much, but for a time, the community was surprisingly self-policing--it was the only site I've ever been on where extreme right-wingers and extreme-left-wingers could get into an argument on the forums and actually debate rationally instead of descending into insults. Thing was, once the admins descended and started banning people, they started to get people who really weren't all that bad, just because that sort of person could normally be expected to cause problems. The regular users responded by never reporting ANYONE, no matter how awful they were being. (I was one of about twenty people who either left or were banned during just one of the pedo purges--they banned someone I liked on what I thought were false accusations, and I flipped out and told the mods exacty what I thought of them.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
There are bigger problems with it but my main one is that A LOT of the trope examples are subjective speculation that the contributor who wrote it takes to be fact, when in reality they're the most boneheaded fan-theory/opinion this side of the internet.

Not to mention that for popular shows/series the fans will bloat the trope lists with things that don't really apply. Like, I highly doubt MLP has THAT many fucking tropes in a fairly simple show.

Most fanfic recs suck.

And don't ever go to troper tales/some trope pages because people use them to try and make themselves look smarter than they really are.

OK basically everyone's stupid.

There are to my mind two fundamental problems with the site.

The first, which is much more obvious and more visible, is that its community is crap. Just really, really bad, full of terrible people and complete junk and really bad conversations and content - just really toxic in general. This is most concentrated on the forums, but I think it's true to some extent of the userbase as a whole, it's just much more diluted in terms of looking at the actual tropes.

The second problem, to me, which seems to be much less visible but IMO probably more fundamental and hard to correct, is that the mode of looking at fiction that TV Tropes engenders, and the way that they habitually think about tropes, is wrong and misleading. TV Tropes tends to think of tropes in a way that's extremely simplistic, rule-bound, black-and-white, and consequently shallow. And similarly they tend to be shortsighted when they're looking at works because they look at them in terms of the same category of tropes. So I think that's maybe less harmful than the toxic morons who post on their site, but it's still wrong and not good.

Depends on which part you're looking at:

The administration is terrible. Fast Eddie, admin and owner, is a very egotistical jackass who will not accept anything but kowtowing and kissassing. And I say this as someone who never got into a spat with him. He *will* ban you for making edits he simply disagreed with. He won't explain it, he'll just take you off the site. His ego is only made worse by the fact he only surrounds himself with people who will play his game. This leaves assholes like him as the main mods.

Reading the "I was banned" thread on the forums can be alternately hilarious and very gross. The mods must think they're colonels and sergeants, because nothing short of utter prostration before their wisdom will satisfy them.

The site itself is a mess. The missing features on it are ridiculous--for example, someone comes along and fucks up a page, you have to go to a bot to get them to fix it, because there's no editor restoration. Navigation is terrible. I don't know how I learned the rules of that site, they are not laid out simply. Search function is awful, trying to figure out what is where is a nightmare (that five page long side bar is how they organize!).

It used to--some say still does--be rife with really gross fetishistic crap. Entire sections devoted towards creepers saying "Oh yeah, I found this guy hot, he made me so wet, I fingered myself last night thinking of him". I'm not joking. That doesn't even go into the creepy pedo and weird ass kink stuff. Most of that stuff was taken out because (supposedly) TVTropes was reported to Google AdSense, where the site makes its money, for having some pages on hentai tropes. But I think it was just Fast Eddie's ego.

As a side note on his ego, the guy has no issue letting the site be colored by his grudges--he develops games, and Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation's caustic criticism has led the guy to outright ban people saying something in praise of him; insults on places like Encyclopedia Dramatica have led to a pure ban of any mention of it on the site.

But here's the most controversial part:

The validity of the tropes. My personal opinion is that people--particularly writers--get very sensitive over this site because they believe the nature of categorizing ideas and themes common to fiction is an insult. I feel like a lot of people can't help but inflate "cliche" with "trope, in spite of their better judgment. Fiction is full of patterns, it's undeniable. The existence of them does not mean you do not have an original idea anyway, or that your themes are too simple and can be easily packaged up. But a lot of people think so anyway.

TVTropes has gotten really boring and stuffy lately. It's like the Serious Business attitude that's made Wikipedia editors such an unbearable bunch has infected TVTropes.

A+ I started rolling my eyes when they started whining about how oh noes, some people might not immediately understand a trope title if it's an obscure reference to a fictional work, and that's just unacceptable, as if tvtropes is actually some kind of legit credible resource that needs to be accessible and user-friendly for the good of the public. LOL.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... the Wild Mass Guessing and It Just Bugs Me/Headscratchers pages were fun for a while, but then people started getting really pissed off if you posted anything that didn't fit with their pet theory or you interpreted something in a way that they didn't like. And they all have a really rigid view of tropes, if you try to explore why a trope might've been used they just kind of tell you to gtfo.

[personal profile] ill_omened 2013-02-02 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
As defensive as the site can be, a large part of that is probably because people have weirdly obsessed over them, and tried to get the site shut down by getting advertisers to pull out.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you and all that.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
^ This

Also, people were ragging on them for being "creep central" (probably due to Troper Tales) and housing sickos so they axed pages they thought might contribute to such troublesome stuff and locked up the Lolita page.

Now people are complaining that they're being too strict by locking that up. So it's kind of like a unpleasable hate-base.

AGREED SO HARD.

I am a troper. I love TV Tropes. I hate how it's been going downhill because Fast Eddie and his sycophants refuse to listen to criticism.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
The mods are the sort of mods you would want if you were tired of hearing people object to sexist or racist or otherwise offensive language. So, in other words if you like calling people bitches or sluts or retard or whatever and like to talk about how feminism is oppressing men, the mods are at your back. They will ban people for saying bitch is a sexist word and for objecting to its prevalent use on the site.

The site itself and the concept behind it is pretty cool and not everyone there is a doucherag but the mods certainly are. It's unfortunate.

So in short I agree, OP

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Completely agreeing. The moderation drained most of the fun out of it. They do things like removing "obscure" references like Mario from trope names, and cut examples on negative tropes because they're too negative. And... I'll stop before I write an essay.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think the userbase has to take some of the blame too. Especially the whining and amero-centric racism. It plays into the twats at the top's hands just too easily.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
The site is a haven for some of the lamest, most cringe-worthy people on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
The second lamest and most cringe-worthy group of people.

No matter how low tvtropes sinks it will never be as lame, gay, or retarded as fanficrants (insults picked deliberately).

They are pathetic on a whole other quantum level.

This doesn't have much to do with your secret, but I found out yesterday that a guy in one of my fandoms who has a giant, ugly hate-boner for one of the main characters is on tv tropes. I looked at said character's character tropes list, and sure enough, it's written in a way that makes him look far worse than he actually is (even though he has his moments of just not being a very nice guy), and any mention of his positive moments was followed by, in essence, "and then he goes right back to being a bigoted, bullying asshole".

I now have a very hard time taking anything on that site seriously.
