Why are you still watching it, if you don't even care/like it anymore?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
OP. Out of habit mostly. It was the first show/fandom that I ever got into so it's kinda hard to give up.

Well, they can be platonic soul mates, which is how I interpret it. And I think it's cute. However, I do think Zachariah fucked with them and their memories in Heaven to drive them further apart. And I'm open to hearing other interpretations.

What is your interpretation of it? I'm curious now.

Also, why are you still watching if you hate it so much?

At the time of watching it, I probably didn't even have an interpretation. It literally flew right by me. After rewatching it, in seemed like throwaway line to me. Like you said, Zachariah manipulated them so based on that I don't believe Sam & Dean being soul mates is canon in any way, shape or form.

I was open to the platonic soul mates concept initially, but that just lead to a lot of "I'm not a wincest shipper, but even I think that they're soul mates" type of comment so now I just disregard the term completely. They're brothers who have a special/deep bond. The end.

I do think of them as platonic soulmates, but people are way too hung up over the heaven episode imo. Let's be clear right now, they didn't share a heaven. Dean's heaven did involve his family, but Sam's heaven was very different. They certainly aren't soulmates in the heavenly sense.

And I'm sorry you don't enjoy the show anymore. I don't either, not really, but fuck this show is weirdly addictive. But I think the latest episode was slightly redeeming. Just slightly, it was still pretty bad and a poor excuse for drama.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
OP here!

I agree that they didn't share a heaven, and that on the basis of what Ash said, yup, they clearly weren't soulmates in the heavenly sense. But it everyone kinda jumped on the term "soulmate" and now it's supposed to be everyone's canon. I've always thought that it was just blatant fanservice.

It really is kind of annoyingly addictive! At the start of this season I was watching for Sam, but then...bleh. I haven't seen the last two episodes yet but I seriously have no idea what's going on anymore. Demon tablet, angel tablet?! They need to put it out of it's misery.

lol. They are never going to make Dean or Sam homosexual/incestuous, so don't worry about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
You're not alone. I've always eye-rolled something hard at that 'soul mate' thing. I mean, really? They're supposed to be co-dependent to the point they can't even leave eachother some space in heaven?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
They didn't even share the same heaven though, Dean had to go and find Sam in his. Tbh I thought that line was more directed at their parents initially but with everything that happened on that front it really is nothing more than a throwaway line to me now.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
The poster above me may have a point about how they aren't *really* sharing a heaven, although they wouldn't have made such a big deal about Ash being able to jump between heavens if it were something that was normally possible.

But this: ~I mean, really? They're supposed to be co-dependent to the point they can't even leave eachother some space in heaven?~

Was, I think, the point. Throughout the series we've been pounded repeatedly over the head with evidence and rants from various side characters that yes, Sam and Dean *are* that (unhealthily) co-dependent. Soulmates or Winchester bullheadedness, it amounts to the same thing.

(I don't think it's 'proof' for Wincest any more than "get out of my ass" was proof for Destiel, but I don't think it was a break in pattern either.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I used to think of them as soulmates, but now during season 8 ... I want Dean to run off with Benny and Sam to get his normal life with Amelia. I've never felt this way about any of the other side characters/potential love interests, but there it is. I think everyone involved would be happiest that way.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
da

Dean/Benny has captured my heart like virtually no other Dean ship. I hated what happened to them recently in canon but up until that point, I was rooting for exactly what you're suggesting. Plus Sam just seems like he would be so much happier with Amelia.

Well, if Amelia would take him back which at this point is a bit iffy.

I used to only want them to have each other as well, but now with season 8 all I want is for both of them to settle down in a functional polyamorous relationship with Amelia (in which the brothers don't get it on) living on a farm-cum-scrapyard with a cattle dog named Bobby and a cat named Cas. So, yeah, I get where you're coming from.

I ship Sam/Dean but I don't consider them to be soulmates either. Hell, I don't even think that canon considers them soulmates. Ash might have said that they were but come on, Zachariah was manipulating that whole scenario and had been since they woke up in Heaven! Unless people think it was an accident and totally coincidence that all of Sam's happy memories were things Dean would find a betrayal and hurtful, kinda as if somehow designed to manipulate him into thinking Sam hadn't cared for him and his love for Sam wasn't enough to keep him fighting. Oh yes, and if Ash and Pamela didn't spend all of their time trying to talk up how awesome Heaven was and seriously they were totally cool with being dead.

I love the Sam/Dean ship but the soulmates thing? Meh. Totally not my bag. And I get really annoyed if people insist that it's totally canon when it was really, really subjective and can be interpreted in a lot of ways.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I can't think of them as soul mates because it's too fucking depressing.

They can't even get away from each other in death? How awful.
kluify: (Default)

[personal profile] kluify 2013-02-07 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
They really are going to end up toothless and bald on Bobby's porch, aren't they?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
See, I just don't understand why people continue to watch a show if they don't like it anymore. When I stop liking a show, I stop watching it. The end. Why do something that's supposed to be fun if it's not fun anymore?

Re: getting in the habit of it, or whatever...well, that's one thing, but ffs, quit clogging up what little productive discussion there still is with your bitching. OP, this isn't directed just at you, but yeah. In general, it's annoying. If you don't like something anymore and just watch it out of habit, what's the point in moaning and groaning over it?

And, I think there's a difference between genuine criticism of a show that you hope to see someday change, and just general "blah the show sucks now but I'm going to continue to moan and whine about how much I hate it at every opportunity."

For whatever that's worth.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
OP. I don't bitch about the show much these days because there's no point, but...the people who actually like the show do as much bitching, moaning and groaning as those who don't. You can't read an article about SPN without finding some kind of argument between Sam/Dean/Cas/whoever fans or people who hate [insert character].

I'd much rather read what someone doesn't like the show has to say than read pointless arguments from people who claim to like the show anyway. At least they're not being underhand about it.

I thought the entire point of the episode was to show that they're NOT soul mates (in the 'heavenly' sense). They did NOT share a heaven, Dean had to FIND Sam. Of course, it's been a long time since I've watched it.

And I don't get why anyone would continue to watch a show they hated. But that's just me.

I never knew this debate was an actual thing. And for that I am glad. (For the record, I think the thought of them being soul mates is just too depressing to even think about seriously)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You could actually argue that technically they had different heavens that were connected, since Dean had to travel to a different area to get to Sam, so you can either read it as them "sharing" a heaven and being soul-mates or as them having separate heavens. And if you do read it as them being soul-mates, there doesn't have to be a sexual component to it, which is how I read it. I'm cool w/people shipping it, but incest is very much not my thing. It majorly gets on my nerves to have people point to this episode and go "BUT WINCEST IS CANON" because... no. Even if you read it as them being soulmates, soulmates =/= automatic fucking, and everyone I've seen use that argument uses it as proof that they are fucking and... ugh.
