Blech. I don't care much about Jim/Pam as a couple any more, but she's sad that her husband gets involved in a new, demanding job (outside the dead end dying-industry/company job where they waste time all day) so she needs another man to save her? I know the show's been playing up Pam the Victim by playing Jim as a jerk on top of the job, but it just makes Pam look pathetic to me. If this ship happened she'd be trading down from the aimless paper salesman to a guy who spent the past 9 years holding a boom mike on a weird documentary and probably sees her as a kindred spirit.

OKay has anybody actually read the finale synopsis? Twilight accidentally switches everybody's cutie marks and destinies, presumably this means she gets Celestia's and is temporarily an alicorn until she fixes what she's done.

Everybody's back to their proper cutie marks and destinies and Twilight is Twilight again, boom. Crisis over.

p.s. If their roles were reversed there's no doubt in my mind that people would be seeing Jim as a pathetic loser trying to undermine his more talented and ambitious wife because he was jealous and she was growing beyond him because he was too limited.

... It's odd how most answers to this thread say catharsis.

I used to think the same and give people the benefit of the doubt. Then one author I know told me upfront, when I asked her why yet another rape / beating in her story, that it was because characters had to encounter problems in a story. Also, hurt/comfort.

And it does seem to the be main reason of many fics.

To that point, it looks like a lack of imagination to me. Usually, characters I'm drawn to already have a plate full of issues, so rape gets over the top.

At least if it's out of a kink, I can just go YKINMK and ignore it (and the fics with it if they have proper warnings).

Yeah no, here's BIG difference between not keeping it in your pants even though you have a significant other, who you then cheat on; and not keeping it in your pants when you have no significant other, no intentions to form a long-term relationship, and therefore no reason to keep it in your pants if you don't want to (a concept that your use of the sneering, dismissive term "keep it in your pants", which implies they have sex because they can't stop themselves from even though they should, completely denies the validity of).

Seriously, the two scenarios are a hundred miles apart.

it's not really about hate, though. it's the fact that someone is being diminished as a person, that their own feelings and experiences are being diminished. it's never, ever okay to do that to somebody, and it's not 'worse' to do it to one 'kind' of person over another, just because it's been done more to that 'kind' of people. that mentality is pretty much the root of the problem, even of the intent is different.

As a group? No, you're right, they're not. But as various isolated individuals? I don't see how it wouldn't hurt an individual man. It doesn't magically become okay to treat a person badly just because your poor treatment of him isn't actually systematic oppression and discrimination.

No, it's more like verbally bullying a white person because you're an asshole, versus verbally bullying a black person and calling him the n-word because he's black and you're a racist asshole.

The latter is obviously worse and has more layers of awfulness woven into it, but that doesn't mean bullying the white person is okay.

But you don't get it. No one's saying it's "worse" than how women are treated. No one's saying it's as bad as how women are treated. No one's saying it's anything even a fraction as bad as how women are treated. But just because it's not anywhere as bad as how women are treated, doesn't mean it's actually good or okay. Like, it's not okay to beat up a guy, even if it's a lot worse to beat up a woman and grope her while calling her gendered slurs.

Or if you truly can't wrap your mind around the concept of liking sex and having multiple casual partners while still respecting them as a person, let's just say people's attitudes towards sex are less neurotic in the 23rd century than they are now?
