Re: Of flower eggs and rosewater: Pictures of the settings of a Malay wedding
Now before the wedding starts, we first need to get our hands on a set of pavilions. No need to cancel the wedding because of rain now! I didn’t remember the full number of pavilions we ordered but I’m positive that it was more than five but less than ten. The parts arrived during the evening and we spent the entire night up to midnight placing the tables and lining the pavilions with cloth.
These were the small ‘gates’ that guests would use to enter both the pavilions and the house. The red-white one was where the groom and his family procession would enter into the festivities and the one wreathed in ivy leaves and with the hanging birdcage would be used to enter the house accordingly. Just one of the perks of having a relative who’s a wedding planner!
This is the raised dais that the bride and groom would sit during the ‘Bersanding’ ceremony. We worked for over two days to get this right and had to move most of the furniture in our living room to create enough space to construct it. Usually after the wedding is over, we would have group family photographs on the whole platform with the bride and groom, just as a momento.
These are the tools needed for the floral-and-rosewater-sprinkling ceremony used by the adults. Those metal cups you see there, those are used to store flower petals, pandan leves, and sometimes a mix of the two. The long lamp-looking thing is actually a container to store the rosewater. Family members would just hold the bottom bulb and slowly sprinkle the bride and grooms’s hands with it. After that they would sprinkle a pinch of the floral mix from the cups on the bride and groom’s hands.
Ahh, the eponymous ‘flower eggs’ or bunga telur as we Malays call them. Eggs are a symbol of fertility in Malay culture and thus, every adult -usually the women- would get one ‘flower egg’ as a present for attending the wedding. Before the ceremony is over though, we would arrange them in bouquet shapes and display them alongside the bride and groom. Yes, those are real eggs. Yes, they are wrapped in satin and paper flowers and white bamboo stalks. Yes, we gave them away to guests. Hope you all aren’t afraid of cholesterol!
Preparing a floral mix of rose petals and pandan leaves. The leaves are usually sliced into thin minute pieces and then either be prepared as it is or mixed with different flower petal combinations. Sometimes my mother makes this mix just because it freshens up the air in the bedrooms, and I must say, it really does smell nice whenever I came back from school or college after a long day.
This was actually not in the original plan! We discovered that there were a few extra wedding decorations and converted a ‘wakaf’ (gazebo) in the garden into some sort of mini dais where we could just frolic and make stupid crazy pictures of ourselves! I had a lot of fun photographing my sister in there. XD
And of course, don’t forget the goodybags! Hint: It’s just a cup in there. NO, seriously. There is literally nothing in those bags. Except a cup. And some chocolates. That’s it. Oh, and before you all think it was our idea, it was the bride’s idea.
…wha….
And that’s it! I hope you are all entertained with what you have seen, and I’m sorry that I didn’t get to capture the first part of the whole wedding ceremony. Hope you all have a nice day!
SURPRISE WEDDING PICTURES
There was a GIANT glass tub full of marshmallows in the Chocolate Fountain section. I just looked for a container and…slipped a few for myself. Hee hee.

I am in awe of those eggs in the shape of flowers.
Thanks for posting this. Fascinating and beautiful.

Also, the ceremonies sound much more interesting than the weddings I've been too. Thanks for explaining everything and sharing your pictures!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 06:02 am (UTC)(link)Out of curiosity, what would the goody bags normally contain? I may be misunderstanding, but I get the impression it wouldn't usually be just a cup.
