1. Most people don't speak Japanese outside of Japan, so the voice acting can never sound terrible because they have no idea what is being said. They can't know if the inflection is poor, the emotion not strong enough, etc, because it's all basically gibberish.

2. The Japanese style of emotion in film and television and anime is WAY more over the top than what the West prefers. They have Big Emotions, kind of like a musical, and a voice actor trying to emulate those emotions is going to sound ridiculous to our ears.

3. The designs themselves tend to be over the top and lend themselves to having over the top voices that don't exactly fit our cliches. The West doesn't have a squeaky school girl cliche, but they have to cast for it anyway. Jessica Rabbit might have sounded a bit over the top, but she also sounded appropriately sexy and smoldering. Perhaps the voice actress for her in Japan had a hard time emulating that same kind of voice, because they simply didn't have the same cliche for it.

4. The voice acting itself is often bad. The actors are often bad. The casting director is often bad. The localization is often bad.

Your last point - is that aimed at all dubs for media regardless of country, at the Japanese original dubs or the American dubs?

Japanese original to American. I couldn't say for the others.

Your first point is what I thought of first. If it's in Japanese, I can't really tell if the voice acting is bad, whereas if it's dubbed into English, I definitely can. So even if the original Japanese voice acting is actually no better than the dub, it won't sound as jarring to me.

This. I'm the same way. Since I don't understand the language fully, it bothers me less if the acting isn't as good whereas when it's been dubbed into my native language, I'm far more aware of any uncomfortable pauses, poor acting choices, awkward phrasing, et cetera.

I also tend to be far more forgiving in general when it comes to voices that I might find annoying in my native language. For some reason, they just bother me less.

At least you're aware of it. Most sub-purists think the acting in Japanese is better because they don't realize that not understanding the language has skewed their perception in its favor.

Yeah, that's bullshit. I've heard many terrible Japanese subs.

They didn't say the voice acting never is terrible, just that they won't be able to hear it. It's the same way for me. I don't know what Japanese is supposed to sound like when it's spoken naturally, so even if the acting would sound fake to someone who speaks Japanese, it wouldn't sound fake to me, because for all I know, it's supposed to sound like that. Same thing with English before I learned to speak it (ie, before I was ten) - since I had no idea what English usually sounded like, nothing seemed particularly wrong.

Of course, many people don't realize this is about subjective experience, and think the acting must really be better if it sounds okay to them, but, well, they're wrong.

That was exactly what I was objecting to. It's very nice that you specifically can't tell when a sub is shit if you don't speak the language, but that is not a general rule.

It's a general rule.

Maybe you can tell because you consume a ridiculous amount of their media, but most people cannot tell poor acting spoken in another language that they do not understand.
