Re: Non-fandom Secrets

I really hate this whole "google it yourself" attitude people tend to have, especially when somebody's asking for resources for something unusual/misunderstood/misrepresented. Yeah, I could google it, but I've no idea what's legit and what's not - why are people so fucking against a request for a starting point? jfc...

And the lack of a response at all, even when asking about something in a place where people talk about it like they fucking know what they're on about, just makes me doubt anybody's crusade to make the subject better understood. I can't learn this by osmosis, my god...

I agree so, so much. Not only is the person probably trying to learn about something from people who clearly know what they're talking about, rather than doing the research themselves and possibly getting it all wrong, but it's a really assholish attitude to have. Especially if it's something that just requires a short, easy answer.

lmgtfy is the douchebaggiest website to ever douchebag.

that website is funny to me because when someone uses it is like...well, thanks for typing up a website + the search term + copying the link + going back to the comment thread + giving me the link which types out the search term and gives me results. I sat very prettily while you went out of your way to avoid human communication and look like a douchebag.

You probably want to rephrase your requests, because it may come off as "but I can't be bothered to educate myself so explain it all to me!!" to particularly jaded people.

I was specifically asking for resources in addition to a site I had been using, but it's a little outdated. I don't know how anybody could think it was a "please educate me!" request unless it was a snap assumption. If I'd worded it in a "please educate me!" way, I'm sure I would've gotten at least one response telling me off for it, but seeing as I got nothing, I can only assume that people understood what I was looking for and just had no resources/didn't care enough to help me out.

Even aside from that, though, I've seen several instances of people asking for more information on something misunderstood/underrepresented and other people just being assholes and telling them to "google it." Maybe it's just me, but I'm happy to provide links when somebody isn't specifically asking for their own private lesson on the matter. I don't know why people have to go out of their way to be assholes when they could just move on.
thinkatory: ([DW] I can see that.)

Ugh, yeah, I know what you mean, then. It's definitely counterintuitive in that case. (I'm a linkprovider, too!)
