Love non-con, hate dub-con: is this weird? [tw: rape]
(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)However, I simply CANNOT stand dub-con. It makes my skin crawl all over to read about dubiously- or non-consensual sex that doesn't quite read as rape even if it would be IRL, especially the "no no yes" variety where the victim starts enjoying and actively participating in it. I find it a hundred times more disturbing and upsetting than depictions of rape, even really twisted ones.
I don't know how to explain this, but it ALWAYS seems like EVERYONE takes it for granted that non-con is "worse" or "more extreme" or "more hardcore" or "more upsetting" than dub-con, and I don't feel that way at all. Does anyone else feel like this?

Whereas many dub-con writers can trip into that mindset of, "Oh... It's not actually rape because they really do love each other see!" And meanwhile you've got the reader going, "Umm... no. That's skeevy as hell."
In short, it's what happens when author intention fails to line up with reader perception.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)For me, if it's clearly written as kink-fodder I'm a lot more likely to find it hot. The minute I start to think the author doesn't see the problem is when I start to get creeped out.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:46 am (UTC)(link)I can definitely see why it would skeeve you out more, though. Most dubcon is a solid "ehhh" for me but the rape-is-love stuff is a definite NOPENOPENOPE BACKBUTTON TIME.
