Love non-con, hate dub-con: is this weird? [tw: rape]

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely love non-con stories. They're a huge guilty pleasure of mine and I find the power trip and sadism of the rapist and the helplessness/shame/horror/pain/fear of the victim both extremely hot, not to mention I love those cliched hurt/rescue/comfort and whump scenarios.

However, I simply CANNOT stand dub-con. It makes my skin crawl all over to read about dubiously- or non-consensual sex that doesn't quite read as rape even if it would be IRL, especially the "no no yes" variety where the victim starts enjoying and actively participating in it. I find it a hundred times more disturbing and upsetting than depictions of rape, even really twisted ones.

I don't know how to explain this, but it ALWAYS seems like EVERYONE takes it for granted that non-con is "worse" or "more extreme" or "more hardcore" or "more upsetting" than dub-con, and I don't feel that way at all. Does anyone else feel like this?

Afraid not :\ I can enjoy dub-con, depending on the circumstances, but as soon as you give me non-con with no hint of enjoyment by the victim, no thank you.

Nah, makes sense in a way. Many people who write non-con (and label it as such) know exactly what they're writing. They tend to understand that's it's messed up and so some people can see it as more of a fantasy.

Whereas many dub-con writers can trip into that mindset of, "Oh... It's not actually rape because they really do love each other see!" And meanwhile you've got the reader going, "Umm... no. That's skeevy as hell."

In short, it's what happens when author intention fails to line up with reader perception.

With non-con the assumption is generally: oh, this is for kinky purposes, I don't condone real life rape and neither does the author, we all know what's going on here, it's all cool. Dub-con feels a lot more real to me, especially if the author's final judgment seems to be: he/she did want it really so this doesn't count as rape, this is just hot.

For me, if it's clearly written as kink-fodder I'm a lot more likely to find it hot. The minute I start to think the author doesn't see the problem is when I start to get creeped out.

I can sort of see where you're coming from. I mean, I can't really read either because lack of consent hits my squick buttons hard, but at least with out-and-out non-con, it's universally portrayed as an attack. Dub-con, though, at least from what little I've seen, makes it hard to tell whether it's just supposed to be hot or if the author actually thinks the behavior is okay. It somehow comes off as more ignorant of rape culture than straight-up non-con :/

I don't like reading either, but I find that dub-con often squicks me out more simply because it's more likely to be treated as straightforwardly romantic, instead of at least kind of skeevy.

I'm not the same as you in that regard, but perhaps you just like to compartmentalize? I mean, I assume that you just like being clear about it being non-con and not blurring the lines, because blurring the lines makes it less clear-cut about what is acceptable and what is not?

I'm the same way - then again, I read noncon solely because I like to see my favorite characters traumatized and unambiguously hurting and having them enjoy it or end up okay with it completely defeats the purpose. I can occasionally enjoy dubcon if the writer really plays up the creepy factor (mind-control, manipulation, what have you) but still, it's normally not my thing, and I tend to like it best when the horror sinks in later, or someone else rescues the character from that situation.

I can definitely see why it would skeeve you out more, though. Most dubcon is a solid "ehhh" for me but the rape-is-love stuff is a definite NOPENOPENOPE BACKBUTTON TIME.

I've been fussing a lot about this lately because I'm writing dubcon for a prompt on a kink meme. It's meant to be seen as fucked up and rape-y and wrong, but I keep worrying that it's not going to come across enough.
