If the guy has it in him to make jokes like that, he's not all that great.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't know if I agree. I think the comedic imagination is a different thing from the actions you take - especially when... I mean, it's not like we're talking about Bernard Manning here. I think Boyle's stuff is a little different from the straight-up dumb, vicious, bigoted racist comedy that some people do - I mean, I know it's kind of hackneyed to say this, but he really seems to be interested more in finding the cleverest way to be shocking that he can. I never got the impression that he has an ax to grind personally.

aww i don't hate him or think he's an asshole. i sense that he's a pretty good person outside of his stage persona.

uh, what kinds of jokes? What does he say to make people think he's sexist/racist?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
He tends to make jokes about racists and misogynists, but from the point of view of one, sort of 'in character' with each joke, thus doing it in such a way that people think that HE is that way. Really, he is taking the piss out of people that actually think stuff like that and is basically making them out to be stupid.

Jokes and an onstage persona don't count as "actions" now? What people find funny and what they endorse are just as important as what they do outside their career, you know.

(I know nothing about this dude, but if he tells racist and sexist jokes? He's probably an asshole, even if he's not racist or sexist.)

ITT: I know who Lenny Bruce and George Carlin are, and their stuff was brutal and funny and ripped apart hypocrisy. Making jokes about a disabled kid raping his mother is just stupid and gross.

Yeah I'm not familiar with this guy but I kind of hate the whole "It's just their stage persona! It doesn't count!" argument. He knows what he's doing and chooses to make that his platform, and I think that's a fair thing to judge.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a national newspaper tried that argument. Turns out that it is crap argument, totally false, does not hold water, and the people who advance it are fucking stupid. He has the court case win to prove it too.

Not gonna lie, I used to love Frankie Boyle in spite of the *edgy* nature of his routine. Then it felt like his appearances on MTW were increasingly intended to just shock, and not even in a funny way. It became the Frankie Boyle Show. Though now we're stuck with people like Andy Parsons (who told that guy he's funny, seriously) I do occasionally miss those days even though Frankie kind of walks a fine line. Anyway, the final straw was when my dad told me that one of his colleagues went to see Frankie live and it was basically recycled jokes from his TV appearances, which I know all comedians do to some extent...but apparently Frankie is particularly bad for it?

IDK, I just don't really like him anymore no matter what his intentions. I've moved on to other comedians.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I liked old episodes of Mock the Week where he could come out with something *edgy*, but could just as much come out with something surreal or strangely sweet - but then MtW's popularity seemed to pick up on "omg Frankie Boyle SO SHOCKING" and seemed to become more "and now for something scandalous: Frankie?" I think something similar happened with Russell Howard, how both of them sort of became increasingly more one-dimensional as the show went on ("and now for something whimsical: Russell?"), and I think it was right that they left when they did.

Yeah, I don't know so much these days (now he's not on television as much and not touring as much) but I saw him back when he was on every panel show, and if you happened to be a fan of panel shows and had coincidentally seen him on every panel show, then you'd seen about 85% of his act. I can give him the benefit of the doubt for that since being a one-liner comedian spread so thin doesn't give you many places to go, but it was a bit unfortunate. Compare to, say, Jimmy Carr, who has the same style of comedy but does try to mix things up a bit for his live shows (and also appears on panel shows to say more than just his one-liners, too).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, this is why I don't like him. Saw him a few years ago, and his support act was brilliant, doing loads of audience stuff with his own material. Frankie then walked out, stared at the back of the room and recited 45 minutes of material I'd heard before, along with a joke about Lewis Hamilton's brother. If I'm going to see you on tour, comedian, at least do 10% new material.

My take on things like this is that if he makes racist and sexist (etc.) jokes, then he makes racist and sexist jokes, and it doesn't really matter to me if he's a racist or a sexist, because he still makes those jokes even if they don't reflect anything he personally believes, and I don't want to listen to them because they're still not funny.

i don't know if i would really call his jokes racist or sexist. certainly a lot of people take them that way, but he's very satirical.

If you're willing to earn your living by pandering to assholes who want to hear sexist and misogynist jokes, you really are in the same boat as your target audience. Also, comedians make jokes about the things they find funny.

Well, he's extremely unfunny, uncreative and really good at making money by being "edgy" to teenagers or people who think offensiveness is the only thing you need to be "edgy". I'm sure he's a cool, rational dude in real life, outside his comedy persona, but that doesn't make him any more funny to me.

So in all likelihood he'll keep doing what he's doing (because £££) and I'll keep hating it.

the funniest thing about these comments is how people who had never heard of this guy are now condemning him just because they read a few lines of text in a dreamwidth community. humour isn't just personal, it's also cultural, and most americans don't understand satire at all.

Believe me OP, I've been to recordings of shows when he was still on telly, and he was vile. Most of the stuff he said was unbroadcast worthy, and it was mostly mean spirited with no redeeming factors.

I also know people in the same business as he is, and he's so horrible that his agent has to apologise to people he deals with for the offense he causes.

It just amazes me how some really nasty people make a lot of money in entertainment.
